I am currently borrowing a laptop so I can get my internet fix. I think I'll need to build a new computer since my old one died. The power supply failure seems to have fried my motherboard, memory, and hard drive. I have a new Antec Basiq 500W power supply, and I think my ATI 1600 graphics card can be salvaged until my bidget allows an upgrade. My DVD RW and standard DVD drives, all-in-one card reader, and case fans should also still be good. I'll probably get a larger case instead of recycling my old Gateway enclosure, and I'm considering an Antec 300 (budget) or 900 (cool look) so I have more room to work inside it and add stuff later. I can buy an old 3.2 Ghz processor and fan from my brother-in-law now that he's upgraded to quad-core in his machine. I'm pretty sure he used AMD instead of Intel in that build. I'll need a new motherboard, and I'd like the upgrade to DDR2 RAM if I go through with this rebuild. DDR is so expensive, it's almost cheaper to build a complete new system then to recycle something old. Any advice on components? My goal is for a mid-grade machine, not a high-end gaming system, but upgradability is important. I'll be running AOE3, Fallout 3, and the games from The Orange Box, but I don't need to have everything maxed out in performance. |

You know games shouldn't matter. All you have to do is buy a little cheap console called onlive and it does all that for you, but onlive ain't out let so you should just wait for that. Check it out http://www.onlive.com/about.html |

My presence here will be unpredictable until the PC mess is resolved. I may have some tests I can run to see what is wrong with my machine and whether it's fixable. |

Yeah. I need a machine for gaming, office applications, internet access, music & movie storage, drafting/modeling, etc. and nothing but a proper PC will do what I need. And I don't want a friggin' mac. I just learned that Leopard won't support the classic environment required for older mac programs designed for OS9 and earlier. Goodbye Marathon, Starcraft, and so much more. I'll stick with Windows XP and maybe Linux. |

brother-in-law will test my primary HDD tomorrow or the next day. If it's good, either the motherboard or the RAM is the likely problem. He may also be able to test the RAM and find out if that's the issue. If the motherboard is the problem, I can get a replacement for about $60-$70. DoL: How hard is it to run Windows games on Linux? I need AOE3, The Orange Box, and The Elder Scrolls III and IV for sure, and a few older games as well. Also, is AutoCAD compatible with Linux in any way, shape, or form? It doesn't look like it, but I assume there are ways to emulate windows. lastly, can Linux also emulate the Mac OS so I can even play Marathon? |

then you sir didn't do your research. I made the switch from PC to Mac in october. I will never go back. I made the switch purely for the game stuntcopter from the old mac classic's, works like a charm, so I don't know where you got that leopard won't support older stuff from. Fact is, all the Mac's are atleast dual core, and you can get a refurbed mac from the webstore that comes with the same warranty as a new mac, free shipping, and when you pop it open, it looks like its brand spanking new, as when they do a technical check of the computer when its returned, they then do a cosmetic check and replace anything scratched or dented. They don't use crap components which is what I was getting tired of on PC. I've rant some pretty expensive PC's that I was constantly dropping money into to make it just a little faster, or just simply to keep it running. If the OS is a problem for you, the Mac computers run XP and Vista, and Windows 7 if you so desire, I run both on my macbook because I also use it for work as a test node when diagnosing network issues, and although leopard does that fine, unique issues that exist on customer sites only exist in XP, so when they have a networking issue they usually have a windows xp issue, so they want to see a windows computer working when a Mac tops it out every time. get ready for months of research if you want to get a PC. from the motherboard out to the keyboard there's hundreds of manufacturers, and many model's within that, so if you want to pick a number like winning the lottery, go for a PC. Or if you want a computer that will do everything PC can do and more, but better, go for a Mac. Its that easy a choice, getting the best, or hoping for the best. After 15 years, I just got tired of hoping. Fyi, if you want to analyse Leopard, you should take note... IT IS LINUX!!! its no different, just appearnces. I have a MacBook from the latest generation, and a 20" iMac from the previous generation alumminum series. Both have been awesome machines, and come with gaming video cards, and dual core intel CPU's, standard! |

Ok, I can understand the cost argument, I really can, you do pay a premium for the apple name. You also don't have any problems with it, where with PC you do, so I am happy to pay an additional 100 - 200 bucks for trouble free pc'ing, but how can you say it doesn't do what you want it to do? I repeat... Mac os X IS linux. The kernel's are the same, its visual differences. I don't know much about linux, but even if Mac doesn't have the kernal you want, you can easily dual boot, or wipe the mac os completely, running xp/vista or linux. I got sick of a pc not doing what I wanted to do, and that was run error free. Apple makes everything better, even windows. Change doesn't come to everyone easily, I can admit that, I thought apple sucked for many years, until I just tried it. I bought it out of spite when I first bought it. I got sick of installing patches, then having to find a new work around because sometehing was accedentally altered in the patch that should have been altered, which in turn has brought on 2 more patches to fix the fallout... you see where I am going with all of this? So I yelled at my PC for 5 min, realized it wasn't going to turn on anymore, and used another pc to buy a mac and never looked back. There is a cost factor for the hardware, but then again, rock solid hardware is worth the extra money if you don't have to sink money into crappy hardware 7 months after purchase. Oh wait, that's right! You can do the RMA process which leaves you without your hardware for 1-2 months... IF its covered underwarranty. Plus you gotta pay shipping and handelling... There's your cost savings with the mac right there. |

OK, I know not everyone is a Mac person, actually, I think I am the only one. But... Take a look at this below: http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB398LL/A?mco=MjE0NjA3MA Tell me where you are going to find that kind of hardware, in such a slim design, yet, a huge monitor like that, with 1080p display qualities, for that price??? As you've all mentioned, no one here really likes the Leopard OS, and I'll be the first to admit, its not perfect. BUT! You can install a dual boot of XP, or better yet, you can reformat the drive, and install XP only on the mac. I do miss some of the games, so that is why I am running a dual boot. And, I've said this many times, for the linux lovers, Mac, IS linux, there's no difference in the way they work, just the visual appearence of the OS. I was working on PC's for many years, did programing, networking, got my Computer Engineering education all in the windows enviroment, with little in the Linux enviroment. I was just as stubborn, but then I decided, why not take a chance, try out the mac, worst comes to worst, I can install XP and continue with my windows days with a smaller computer package. I was really blown away with all the changes apple has made. They were not the obsolete system I thought they were. I do all kinds of things, ranging from Audio editing/music composition to gaming, and I must admit, the apple has done it all far better than my $5000 PC ever did. I'd rather have a computer I don't need to upgrade for over a year, than have a PC that I need a new video card every 3 months because the old one burnt out. I know you're not sold on it, but seriously, do the research for yourself, don't go on public opinion, because public opinion has never use Macs... |

I'm a fan of my Dell computer. Sure it's a piece of junk, but when a piece breaks, they'll ship me a new one overnight. (I got the complete warranty.) I can't find any advantage of Macs over PCs that makes them worth the price. |

Can you cleanly install both Mac and Windows on the Dell??? I thought not... Also, you had to buy extra warranty, with apple you don't have buy the extended warranty to get the piece of mid that a PC will just work. Advantage Mac. Also, I am sick of towers, cords, a such a messy looking desk all the time, I love how the iMac is just one piece, and my keyboard plugs into it. They definately use better chipsets than Dells. I used to fix the Dells, they stink. I also owned a dell before that because of someone's reccomendation, worst advice ever. they replaced the motherboard, CPU and Ram soo many times and it never fixed a windows ME problem that I just decided to send the components from my OLD pc back, and got a free upgrade, that was the only highlight for owning my dell... That and my part time business of selling their parts at school for discount prices. |

Mac Mini running OS 10.5 Leopard: Insert Marathon CD, get notice that the classic environment is not supported. Fail. I called the Mac tech support line from the mac website and was told that there wasn't a way to make it work. Apparently 10.4 was the last version that emulated the old system. The problem seems to be my motherboard. I'm hopefully getting a new one as soon as the eBay auction ends. Then I hook up my new 500W power supply and all my old drives & cards, and hope it works. It'll set me back only about $100 total. Much better for my budget. On the bright side, it looks like I may be getting a new job now, starting Monday. A few months of saving, and I may upgrade to a completely new system. |

I can install Linux and Windows. Why would I need MacOS? You claim yourself that it is Linux.
Still several hundred dollars cheaper than any Mac I've seen.
Oh, it's not a good computer, but they fix it quickly whenever one of their cheaply-constructed components fail. I'm not claiming that Dells - or any PCs - are superior to Macs, but for me, the cost is more important than total reliability. I use a Mac in the computer lab if I can't get a Linux computer, but I really like the inexpensiveness and compatibility of PCs. |

This post is from my old PC. It's not running quite as smoothly as I'd hoped - I may still have some driver issues, and I need to reinstall the 2G of RAM instead of the basic 512 Mb that I am using for testing. I won't have it at home until Sunday, and it may be a while before I get internet at home. |
