Information:

Founded in March of 2007, A World Power was once one of the largest regions in Nationstates, and is currently re-building to its former glory! We as a region hold no specific political ideology, but nations organise themselves into Great Houses of likeminded individuals. The leaders of the three largest Houses form a Triumvirate which is responsible for leading the region. We believe in open elections for all citizens of our region and operate a one of the major defender forces in the game, which protects regions across Nationstates from invasion.

TODAYS SPOTLIGHT IS ON RUCKET
The following is an interview between Rucket and an AWP Inquirer staff member;
Quote:

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MEMBER OF AWP ?
I've been a member since i started playing NationStates back in July.  I think the exact date was July 9th 2007.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR MAIN OCCUPATION ?
I own and run my own businesses.  I just bought a BRAND NEW BMW M5.

WHAT STATE ARE YOU LOCATED IN ?
I'm located in the Mafia capital - NJ, but i'm not near New York, I'm closer to Philadelphia - suburbia.

HOW DID YOU FIND AWP ?
I didn't find it, i got recruited.  I don't remember who recruited me but i do know that member is no longer with us or NS.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT AWP ?
I love this region.  It was the first region i joined and i haven't left it yet.  I was a little skeptical at first when i joined becasue i wasn't sure i would be accepted or enjoy it, but look at me now -  I'm a high ranking and valuable member of the region, in less than 3 months -  shows you how , with time & effort you can accomplish whatever you want.

WHAT TIME ARE YOU USUALLY UP UNTIL ?
I'm usually up till 3am but i'm on AWP & NS until 1am.  I do have a life outside of this  place - even its thats hard to believe.

ANY LAST WORDS ?
Well, not really because my words get around on the forum, but if i must then i'll say that I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE MORE ACTIVITY FROM NEW AND LESS ACTIVE NATIONS

Thank You

The Republic of Rucket is a huge, safe nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 475 million are either ruled by a small, efficient government or a conglomerate of multinational corporations; it's difficult to tell which.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, pro-business government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Defence, Law & Order, and Education. The average income tax rate is 88%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing industry, followed by Soda Sales and Pizza Delivery.

Small businesses are gobbled up almost daily by corporate giants, corporate 'hostile takeovers' now involve ICBMs and main battle tanks, a crusade against barbaric religious practices has begun, and the streets are increasingly clogged with poverty-stricken beggars. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Rucket's national animal is the puma, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the loot.

Rucket is ranked 12,984th in the world for Largest Insurance Industry.

Once again U.N. proposals have fallen short of reaching quorum. Currently the two proposals that are closest to reaching it are "Every Child Counts" which currently has 49 of the 115 needed, and "Global Forrest Preservation" which currently has 43 of the 115 needed. However I estimate that neither of these proposals will reach quorum for they expire today.

This raises an interesting issue, is the U.N., and indeed all of nation states, doomed to disappear due to inactivity?

If you look at our previous editions you will note that there has seldom been a resolution to vote upon. What could this be attributed to? Through careful contemplation, this is what I have come up with.

Nationstates is getting old, the U.N. has been around for years and nearly every area has been touched upon by a resolution. If you go back into the U.N.'s records you will get an excellent picture of the number of active nations. For example, the first U.N. resolution was implemented by a 2 to 1 vote in November of 2002. By December of that some year, the next resolution was passed by a vote of 3,075 to 1336.

These figures demonstrate an explosive increase in the number of active nations. This continued through 2003 until active U.N. nations hovered at just around 15,000 to 20,000. The first dip in active U.N. nations occurred in the holiday season of 2005. The holiday seasons of 2003 and 2004 had both seen decreased activity levels, but not to such an extent. During the holiday season of 2005 decreased to around 10,000-12,000 active nations but remained this way until levels rose again slightly in October of 2006. However activity fluctuated greatly and the slightly higher levels of participants didn't make it beyond holiday '06. The rest of 2007, up to where we are now saw a decline from roughly 11,000 - 13,000 active U.N. nations in June and July, to just 9,000 at the end of August. However September 2007 saw the lowest numbers since 2002. Just around 7,000 active U.N. nations.

Thus we are seeing activity drop to less than half of 2003-2005 levels. We must take into account that the method in which I am using only calculates U.N. nations that actively vote on U.N. resolutions, so actual nation states populations could have fluctuated much more and in different cycles than U.N. activity, however, this is the only method available to us.

This drop in U.N. activity could be attributed to several things. One possibility is that nations have left the U.N. in droves to become independent states free of international bounds. However, due to the position of Regional Delegate and regional influence, which award those who are U.N.member states, we would assume the opposite should be true. However, one can enjoy the benefits of joining the U.N. even if they are not active participants.

Another reason for the decreased U.N. activity is the possibility that people are leaving Nationstates in droves. If one isn't active on the forums, and after they reach a certain population level, they just see the same issues time and time again, they no longer have new features to look forward to etc. But something else, that I myself experienced, is growing up. The vast majority, at least in my experience, of those on Nationstates are high school or college students. When you graduate from either, Nationstates is not something generally taken with you, unless you go to college (such as myself). Not everyone fits into this mold as I'm sure there are many adults participating.

Whatever the reasoning behind these devastatingly low levels of participation, there is one thing we must ask ourselves. Will this trend continue? Will it reverse? Only time will tell the answer to these and other questions, but it's obvious that Nationstates is not what it once was.

How to Make a Telemarketer Go Away
1. If they want to loan you money, tell them you just filed for bankruptcy and you could sure use some money. Ask, "How long can I keep it? Do I have to ever pay it back, or is it like the other money I borrowed before my bankruptcy?"
2. If you get one of those pushy people who won\'t shut up, just listen to their sales pitch. When they try to close the sale, tell them that you\'ll need to go get your credit card. Then, just set the phone down and go do laundry, shopping or whatever. See how long that commission based scum waits for you to get your credit card.
3. If they start out with, "How are you today?" say, "Why do you want to know?" Or you can say, "I\'m so glad you asked, because no one seems to care these days and I have all these problems, my sciatica is acting up, my eyelashes are sore, my dog just died...." When they try to get back to the sales process, just continue on with telling about your problems.
4. If the person says he\'s Joe Doe from the ABC Company, ask him to spell his name, then ask him to spell the company name, then ask where it is located. Continue asking personal questions or questions about the company for as long as necessary.
5. This one works better if you are male: Telemarketer: "Hi, my name is Julie and I\'m with Dodger & Peck Services.... You: "Hang on a second." (few seconds pause) "Okay, (in a really husky voice) what are you wearing?"
6. Crying out, in well-simulated tones of pleasure and surprise, "Julie!! Is this really you? I can\'t believe it! Julie, how have you BEEN?" Hopefully, this will give Julie a few brief moments of terror as she tries to figure out where the heck she could know you from.
7. Say, "No," over and over. Be sure to vary the sound of each no, and keep an even tempo even as they\'re trying to speak. This is the most fun if you can keep going until they hang up.
8. If MCI calls trying to get you to sign up with their Family and Friends plan, reply, in as sinister a voice as you can muster, "I don\'t have any friends...would you be my friend?"
9. If they clean rugs: "Can you get blood out, you can? Well, how about goat blood or HUMAN blood - chicken blood too?"
10. Let the person go through their spiel, providing minimal but necessary feedback in the form of an occasional "Uh-huh, really, or, "That's fascinating." Finally, when they ask you to buy, ask them to marry you. They get all flustered, but just tell them you couldn't give your credit card number to someone who's a complete stranger.
11. Tell them you work for the same company they work for.
Example:
-Telemarketer: "This is Bill from Widget & Associates."
-You: "Widget & Associates!! Hey I work for them too. Where are you calling from?"
-Telemarketer: "Uh, Dallas, Texas."
-You: "Great, they have a group there too? How\'s business/the weather? Too bad the company has a policy against selling to employees! Oh well, see ya."
12. Tell the Telemarketer you are busy and if they will give you their phone number you will call them back. If they say they are not allowed to give out their number, then ask them for their home number and tell them you will call them at home (this is usually the most effective method of getting rid of Telemarketers). If the person says, "Well, I don\'t really want to get a call at home," say, "Ya! Now you know how I feel." (smiling, of course...)
