You've seen those forums that have all these cool buttons and a great skin? Did you join? Most likely. What if that exact same forum didn't have the graphics, and skin on it? What if it was just a default...everything? Would you join this default forum? That is all perception and how you judge something. You have to try and make your forum as good looking as it can be. Skin: First of all, tons of forums die everyday because the administrator didn't care to put up a skin other than that bland default IPB skin. What you need to do is get a skin that is easy on the eyes and represents what your forum is about. When choosing a skin be sure to check if lots of other skins look like it, and same goes with the other forums. If lots of other forums are using that same skin, chances are that you will be lost in a sea of similar forums. Buttons: When getting that button set, make sure it has all of the proper buttons in it; if you get a set with 3 buttons, it won't be real useful will it? An average button set has around 46 buttons in it. Before you upload your buttons, check to see if they match your skin. If they don't, please look for another set. If you can't find another set, use the set you were first going to use, but request a set that will better match your forum skin. team icons: These aren't very important when a guest is viewing your forum, but they still cause an impact if the guest will join or not. When picking out a team icon set be sure it is along the same theme as your skin. If it has the same colors, go ahead and use it. Pips: Basically the same thing as team icons, but they shouldn't be really big. around 10 Pixels by 10 pixels should be sufficent. banner: Have that great skin, cool buttons and smooth team icons/pips? Well the banner is probably the second most rated graphic that guests judge when veiwing your forum. If they see the default logo, they will see unprofessionalism, and that may cause them to not return. why should I do all of this? Well you don't have to, but you don't have to have a popular/active forum do you?  why do people look at all this stuff instead of the content? I never said that that is what all guests SOLELY look at. They look at content as well, but the first things that attract them - and get them to even read what your forum offers - are what has been mentioned before. |
