Picture this: You've set up a forum following all the tips in the topic 'A Presentable Forum' written by me, and you get members joining left and right. The only problem is, they never post. Bad huh? You took all that time to set up this amazing forum, and then it flops in the post count area. I can give you tips on what to do to keep your members happy; and furthermore, posting. Don't limit your forum to just one subject. This is why a lot of forums die. You need to widen your range of available subjects your members will enjoy chatting about. If your forum was on gaming, then try to widen the scope by putting in some entertainment, debate, graphics, ASCII (B)), or RPG forums. This will open up worlds, trust me. If your main subject (in this example, gaming) isn't active, then your members have something else to talk about while waiting for any updates on games or whatever. Be active yourself! If members don't see their admin active, do you think they feel like the forum is good enough for them when apparently it isn't even worth your time to visit yourself? Try posting a few times a day, or at least logging in at peak hours. I've been to a few forums where since the admin was never active the members had acually rebelled against the forum! Don't let this happen to you! Correspond with your members. Let them know that the place they are at is friendly and open. Don't be an 'e-nazi'. Firstly an e-nazi is somebody who cannot take a joke and warns every member for even just slighty stepping outside the rule boundries. Allow so slack within your rules. If a member just joins and puts a link in his or her signature, then you ban them because your rules state 'No advertising!'; this would be too harsh. Remove the link from this members signature and tell them to please read the rules next time. Make sure that you tell them in a friendly way, not like: 'If you ever post another link again, I'll have you banned here and at every other forum you visit! how dare you break MY rules that I set up to stop this...this NON sense!'. This would really turn people off of your forum, and thus, is now dead. Start contests and games. Everybody loves to play games! ...If you don't then you're wierd and starange and nobody likes you......ok besides that...Basically try to get your members competing for something, maybe higher post count, or a free skin. You can choose that. A contest that kills two birds with one stone is a referal contest. You've probably heard of these before. 'The member with the most referals of other members gets a prize!' Try this out and you will get new posting members AND more activity! |
