![]() United no longer! You heard right Gold Coast United have been sacked from the A-League effective at the end of this season. There has been so controversy for the last couple weeks. Football Federation Australia said the axing has come as a result of the team breaching at least 3 articles of the Club Participation Agreement. Gold Coast's owner Clive Palmer is furious and is contemplating legal action against the FFA. You can find out more here: http://www.foxsports.com.au/football/a-league/ffa-dump-gold-coast-united-from-the-a-league-as-club-pays-price-for-owner-clive-palmers-agitation/story-e6frf4gl-1226285089378 Edited by ANWA*Luminal, Mar 2 2012, 01:29 AM.

Wow this is sad for United fans but after seeing the crowds at their home games, I'm not surprised. It could be mismanagement or just the case that the City of Gold Coast can't sustain an A-League team at this stage. I wonder if another team (Western Sydney?) will be introduced to keep the league at 10 teams. |

I think getting another side in Sydney should be a matter of high priority for the A-League. If Melbourne can sustain two strong clubs then so could Sydney! |

So how many clubs are hear in Queensland now? Not that I care about the sport but I find it depressing that the world favourite sports is shunned so harshly in Australia. |

This will leave Brisbane United as the only A-League club in Queensland. However Gold Coast does not seem to have the population to sustain 3 codes. The AFL is going to have to prop up their Gold Coast based team for the foreseeable future and the A-League could spend their money for better things in my opinion. However don't get me wrong. The Gold Coast is very much a burgeoning emerging market and all codes will need to try and expand there someday. |

Oh yes I know. It is a big market and there is a large amount of people there. I go down there with my house mate once every three months and we visit the arcade there. There is both the money and the local will to grow there. Ipswich is also a place to watch. It is growing fast too but the Coast is most defiantly the place to watch right now. The question tho is can other codes take off in a country that is dominated by AFL/VFL, league and union? Is there really any space left for new sports. I think that is the issue. We have the sports we have grown up with. I think the best chance new sports have is to draw in children and let them grow with said sport. Few people I know care about anything other than one of the three already dominant codes. |

I am a huge Cricket fan and while there is nothing on the news to say it's lowered in popularity, more kids in Australia seem to be interested in Soccer than it! It certainly doesn't seem to have the interest it did when I was growing up! Also Soccer is doing OK especially in Melbourne. It is the "World Game" so on that basis alone, it probably will continue to grow in the next decade or two.. |

@Lum btw its Brisbane Roar ![]() and yea Sydney can definitively bring in another team and try to steal some NRL supporters. A Also Soccer has been growing in Australia as you would now see the supporters are around 7-15 thousand per game on average the next coming years it would be around 10-20 as i know a lot of AFL supporters go to soccer during the soccer season Edited by ANWA-Dvltanks, Mar 2 2012, 07:14 PM.

Be warned A-League, the Australian Baseball League may have only just completed its 2nd season but the attendance levels more then doubled compared to the season prior, muhahahahah! Anyone else here talks of some Aussie Billionaire threating to start up another Australian soccer league to take on the A-League? |

as an interesting fact... Soccer/Football has the largest junior participation in the country! also if you combine the total number of people playing every other sport in the world, it still wouldnt be more then the total number playing football! The World Cup has more viewers as a tournament then the Olympics. |
