WWE'12 Review [PS3 Version] by Pencil.

The series of WWE games reach new heights every year and with this addition it had high expectations as they changed the name of the series to a much better name. They changed it from ‘Smackdown vs Raw’ to WWE’12, they repolished the way the game plays with new predator systems that I will explain later.

Universe 2.0

Universe Mode puts you into a real-time calendar of shows including Raw, Superstars, Smackdown and about 14 PPVs, with a lot of customizable options for your shows, superstars and more.

Universe Mode, which was first included in the game in SvR2011 was very poor in gameplay and very boring after just a few matches. There were various problems with how the system works. With the addition of Universe 2.0 in WWE’12 they listened to the players and took away the annoying things, fixed them and added totally new ideas. Although this mode still has a few problems like every week you would see the same two guys get put into a match and other guys never getting put into a match… ever and problems like main eventers getting into the rankings for the mid-card title instead of the world championship.

You can always make your own matches though, but in my opinion this takes the fun out of the whole ‘making your way to the top’ idea. They added things suggested by fans, fixed many problems and the cutscenes are great for turning a match around, you could be getting your ass kicked then your friend comes down to distract your opponent for you to grab the win. This mode scores a 7.5/10 and could still improve in WWE’13.

Road to Wrestlemania

Road to Wrestlemania is a set story featuring 18 months on the calendar. 1 match equalling 1 week. You play as a hero, villain and an outsider for 6 months each.

Villain: Sheamus
Outsider: Triple H
Hero: (Created Superstar)

This year they also changed this mode completely. They used to have 4-5 separate stories based around only one superstar but this year they have 3 linked stories that end up tying with each other. This story was great fun to me because you never know what will happen. One main problem here for me is that sometimes you get into one of the main plots of a story and it just gets so long and boring. Seems as though they got lazy and stuck you in a backstage fight every second week, and that counted as your match for the week. A good example here is when you are in the WCW storyline for your created superstar, they stuck me in at least 7-8 backstage brawls with just this guy and it just gets so boring. This to me is the only big problem here and these storylines and still fun. I especially love the final match, but I just wonder where these 8 guys are running in from as you are sealed inside a cage, meh.

This mode scores an 8/10; need to throw some more creativity in instead of sticking you in backstage brawls against your rivals so many times.

Create-a-Superstar

The title says it all; you… create your own superstar.

Duplicate of last year and added more default names for your character… enough said. 3/10.

Overall Gameplay (Predator System)

The predator system is a brand new system introduced in WWE’12, which improves gameplay, enhances how you play and makes everything look much cleaner. Hit detection is a little weird, this is the first WWE game where you can interrupt a guy trying to suplex another guy and whatnot, but you punch them sometimes, you hear the punch but nothing happens and he continues the move. I guess they will improve on this in the next instalment. I love the way the game plays and I love how no matter what skill level you are, you can always comeback to a fight with the awesome comeback system. I dislike how they didn’t fix random glitches like falling through the ring and all sorts of crap. 8/10.

Visuals

It’s not always a big thing to improve graphics on a game like this; I do like how the roster superstars look more awesome and the crowd all actually look like their cheering. 8.5/10.

Sound

This game is all about the sounds of pain and I sure do love how female wrestlers sound like men when they get hurt on this game! (sarcasm). But not a big deal. I love the sound of the entrance music. Hard to improve on, once again. You can get custom entrance music, which is a little buggy but Patch 1.02 is fixing this. 8/10.

Online

Guh, what can I say… horrible servers like usual. I managed to get the online trophies then never tried playing online again. It took me about a week to get the 5 superstars that I wanted to download. Very poor, but when you actually get into a match there isn’t really much lag, depending on the host connection. 4/10

This game is not great and not that bad either, fun to play but gets boring fast. I definitely suggest having a friend or two over to have some real fun with this game. I’ve bought every wrestling game since 2003 and this game has my favourite roster and is the most fun, even with it’s problems. Overall this game scores a 7/10

Great review mate!

I have been considering buying this game, as a lot of people at EB Games were buying it over Christmas and no-one ever came back with any problems haha ;)

Yeah it is a very fun game the only problem I have with it is seeing how it is obviously most popular in America there are barely any Australians playing so the games are laggy so you can't reverse anything. But if your up for waiting 5+ minutes for a game you can set connection to 3 bar+ so only people from Australia can join you giving you a non laggy game.
