Game controllers threaten existence of real steering wheels in cars

GAME controllers are threatening the 100-year domination of steering wheels in cars.

A growing number of motor makers are working on joystick controls and all three of Honda's concept cars for this week's Tokyo Motor Show are missing a steering wheel.

They range from a battery-powered city runabout to a high-speed intercity commuter car, but each is fitted with the Twin Lever Control system being developed by Honda for future production cars.

Honda has already tested its TLC system on a formula racing car at its Suzuka circuit, home to the Japanese Grand Prix, and found a 0.36secs advantage over a single lap compared to a car with a wheel for the driver.

"It is intended to be more user-friendly. It accurately facilitates the ability of the driver. The lever type is in line with the motion of people,'' Honda Design creative director Yoshinori Asahi said.
Saab built a prototype with a single joystick similar to the design fitted to Airbus aircraft, although it never made it beyond the research stage.

Mr Asahi said Honda was actively developing its TLC system for eventual production, although he declined to give a solid timeline.

"We pursue what is a good feeling among people,'' he said. "It is food for thought. We are working for production.''

Surprisingly, he said the TLC system was not born from the gaming generation but is a reaction to the need for improved ergonomics, better safety and more dashboard display space in 21st century cars.

"Even though they are the gaming generation, our notion for TLC did not come from the Playstation,'' Mr Asahi said.

One of the biggest hurdles to changing from a steering wheel could be legislation, since all drivers currently pass their licence test using a car with a wheel.

"There are some legal issues we have to overcome,'' he admitted.

Now I actually said to a mate of mine that I believe race car drivers should use gaming controllers a little while ago, so I have found this news very interesting

Well there is no reason why cars won't evolve to offer something other than a steering wheel but I don't see it happening for another 20 years at least! The alternative must be safer and easier to use which is going to be tough compared to the trusty steering wheel!

Forgive me but I like knowing my hands are mechanically attached to the front wheels.

This is a great idea, and if they made it so that the buttons had uses such as acceleration etc it would be good, but what about problems like the buttons getting stuck?

haha or if your batteries die on you, nah it will never happen although the Steering Wheel is getting out dated

The only way I can see this happening is if it is slowly introduced then eventually over rules steering wheels, kind of like Automatics. I doubt there will ever be a time in my life where ONLY controllers are used though, there would simply be too many people that would have problems with it.

Within 100 years (if the earth is still spinning) cars will be driving themselves to your destination, it will be great cause I'm not the biggest fan of driving in real life

Yeah that's true, but I think there will still be steering wheels by the time that happens, or something other than a controller anyway.

The idea really is cool though and it would be good to see it come to life. A lot of ANWAs may become expert drivers then ;)

Well all I can say when I play racing car games I tend to crash alot, maybe this isn't such a good idea...

haha, all jokes aside I really don't see this happening all too soon.
My parents wouldn't even know how to hold the controller...

What would happen if you needed to do something with the hand seens though you need two hands to hold the controller?

Yeah if cars really do start driving themselves for most trips, a joystick set up that you use on occasionally for manual controls could be rational. Still we as a species resist change at every opportunity!

I think the controller setup would probably be skipped actually to be honest. If we were going to change the steering wheel now, wouldn't it be with something high tech that is fairly recent?
