Need for Speed Underground 2 is the 8th game in the highly successful 'Need for Speed' franchise, and is the direct sequel to the very popular 'Need for Speed: Underground' After seeing exactly what EA and Black Box can do, it was definitely going to be very interesting if they could top Underground.

OVERVIEW:
The game is set in a city called Bayview, and it starts off with a comic-book style intro, showing you having an accident while racing in a Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R in Olympic City, the setting of UG1. You then turn up at the Bayview Airport, and you are given a heavily modified green Nissan 350z. You are supposed to return it to the owner, Rachel, but you can choose to complete some events for some extra cash.

check out one of the first trailers for Need for Speed Underground 2 (yes this is real)

You then pick one car out of the five available for you to buy: a Peugeot 206, a Ford Focus, a Toyota Corolla, a Nissan 240SX, a Mazda MX-5 Miata. You can get a Honda Civic, but it only comes with one type of game (US or Europe).

You start to race and build up your reputation as much as possible, racing in original events from the previous Underground such as:
Circuit races: A race with 3-4 laps of a circuit against 3 other racers. You must come first on the last lap, not any other lap.
Sprint Races: A point-to-point race that consists of 4 racers who compete for first place at the finish line
Drag Races: A shorter point-to-point race that consists of 4 racers. In drag races you must shift up and down yourself when the screen prompts you to, and if you crash or overheat the engine you total the car.
Drift Races: A circuit race that consists of either 1 racer on the track by himself and other racers on other tracks, or 4 racers on the one track. You must slide around corners and gain enough points to win the event.

There are also four new events, that are:
Street X Races: A circuit race in a very small area, similar to the drift tracks. Very easy to crash.
Underground Racing League (URL): The Underground Racing League is a set of either 1,2 or 3 races. The winner gets the most points, while the rest get a different amount of points (EG. 10 for first, 8 for second, 6 for third etc.)
Outrun Races: Outrun races are one-on-one races that can be done while cruising the city in Free Roam. Once you pull up beside the car, you can activate the race and you must outrun your opponent, taking any road you want.
SUV Races:SUV races are new, as SUV's are the only cars allowed. The actual race events are the same.

Once you finish the game, there is a single player, non story mode, race option, as well as online and offline multiplayer (online does not work anymore)

TUNING:
The tuning in Need for Speed: Underground 2 has the same concept as in Need for Speed: Underground. You pick your car, and then you can buy parts to customize it as much as you want. Underground 2 brings in a newer, easy-to-navigate layout for the tuning, and includes even more tuning, some useless, some not.

It now includes Hydraulics, Wide Body Kits, Engine and Exhaust painting, Neons for inside the engine and boot, new decals, new performance parts, new rims, and more.

The depth of tuning is absolutely stunning, and it is near impossible to find someone who has made a car exactly the same as yours.

GRAPHICS:
The graphics in Need for Speed: Underground 2 haven't received a huge update from its predecessor. The game runs on the same engine, and virtually looks the same as UG1. The world does look a bit better in Underground 2, and lighting, shadow and reflection effects are much better. The game is still visually amazing, however.

can you tell the difference between the two? (the left is Underground, the right is Underground 2)

SOUND:
Need for Speed Underground 2 sounds amazing. Basically every car has a unique engine noise, and for the most part sounds realistic. The soundtrack is really good as it has some well known music, as well as some not-so-popular music.

The only issue is the voice acting... I mean, one can only hear someone say 'Yo dawg you wanna race bruh?' so many times before it drives you insane.

CONTROLS:
Need for Speed: Underground 2 is very easy to play. You only need to get onto the game once and you will be able to control each car. The only issue is that the PC version of this game can become very confusing, as you use the keyboard. You can customize the controls, however.

MULTIPLAYER
Multiplayer in Need for Speed: Underground 2 is split up into two categories:

Split Screen Multiplayer:
The Split-Screen multiplayer is a blast to play. You can tune a car in the Garage, which requires no money from the Career Mode, but you can't use these cars in Career, or you can use stock cars or cars in your Career Mode garage to race one other friend.

It has all of the race events in Career Mode, as well as a Knockout Race, which was left out of Career.

It can only be played with one other friend, which was a bit disappointing.

Online/LAN Multiplayer:
The LAN multiplayer is best used on PC, and can have as many racers as you like, as long as you use the same internet. The same principles apply in LAN as in Split-Screen.

The Online Multiplayer was a definite highlight of the game. It could be played on PS2 and Xbox, as long as you had a LAN Cord connected and (for Xbox) you had Xbox Live. PC was much better Online-wise, as it didn't lag nearly as much. The downside is that EA was forced to shut-down the servers for Underground 2 to make way for the new games that have been released.

OVERALL
Need for Speed: Underground really delivered to fans of the Underground series, and the Need for Speed franchise. It is visually amazing, features over 30 cars that you could freely modify to how you liked, it is addictive to play, and the story will last you well over 20-30 hours to complete fully.

GAMEPLAY: 9.4/10
This game is a really addictive game that you will play for as long as you have it. The Career Mode will last you 20-30 hours, depending on you skill and how much want to finish. The multiplayer was, and partially still is, addictive as hell

GRAPHICS: 9.8/10
This is visually stunning. Everything is really detailed and it really shows that EA Black Box really put time into making the best game they could. It was disappointing, however, that they didn't improve much from Underground 1.

SOUND: 9.1/10
Underground 2 is amazing sound wise. All engines and cars are unique, and the soundtrack is great, but the voice acting can get a little annoying and repetitive.

CONTROLS: 10/10
Even with some minor issues, for people that love racing games like me, these controls are amazingly easy to use. Anyone can play this game with no troubles.

LASTING APPEAL: 9.9/10
This game will take you ages to complete 100%, and once you have finished you can keep tuning cars to your liking. Once fully completed, however, there isn't much to do.

OVERALL: 9.7/10
This is probably the best Need for Speed game that has come out. It is something that really hasn't been done properly before, and EA Black Box have really nailed it and made a better game than Underground 1, which seemed impossible.

Need for Speed Underground 2 was the best selling NFS game AFAIK and one of my favourites though I'm not sure if it's number 1! Also I'm a Snoop Dogg fan but I preferred Little John's "Get Low" on Underground 1 over his remake of the Door's "Riders on the storm" in Part 2!
