PSN hacked in a big way

Sony has warned that the names, addresses and other personal data belonging to around 77 million people with accounts on its PlayStation Network (PSN) have been stolen.

Gamers have been locked out of the network for a week, but the company has revealed that the system has been suspended since it was hacked last Wednesday.

Sony said it discovered that between 17 and 19 April an "illegal and unauthorised person" got access to people's names, addresses, email address, birthdates, usernames, passwords, logins, security questions and more.

Children with accounts established by their parents also may have had their data exposed, according to Sony, which put the warning on its US PlayStation blog — although the warning about the compromise might not be immediately visible to passing readers. The company is also emailing people who might be affected.

The intrusion is potentially one of the biggest ever into a store of credit cards. Sony's PSN is one of the world's biggest holders of credit cards, though not as large as Amazon, eBay, PayPal or Apple's iTunes, which each hold more than 100m accounts.

The previous largest hacking attacks were on Heartland Payment Systems in January 2009, when up to 100m US credit and debit card details were stolen, and TK Maxx in March 2007, when up to 46m credit card details were stolen.

The company said that it saw no evidence that credit card numbers were stolen, but it added: "Out of an abundance of caution, we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained,"

The online marketplace allows users to purchase and play video games on their PlayStation consoles. It launched in autumn 2006 and offers games, music and movies to people with PlayStation consoles.

The hack attack has put it out of action and it says that it may be up to a week before it is operational again.

How reassuring. If it is down for another week I will be very unhappy. Thank god I don't have any credit card data on those accounts.

The silver lining is that the chances of anyone being affected personally are 1 in 77 million. Lucky that you removed your credit card though.

Sony should have made this public knowledge, to wait a week before letting everyone know about the Hacking of credit card details, all they have done is help the hackers so far.

Who knows how many people this could actually effect in the long run, but it's going to take Sony a long time to gain peoples trust again after this.

This is not good, and half of it is Sony's fault.

the chances of being affected are much larger than that, they could try to send you viruses through emails etc

Most viruses get sent as attachments, connected to pictures and stuff like that.
But if they have your Details then it's easy enough to get into your stuff.
We have 3 fire walls on our Computer and any Emails we don't know go into the junk file.

The_Duke it would be a good idea to inform your Credit card provider of what has happened.
And keep an eye out for unknown transactions.
I would suggest that any else with there Credit Card details on PSN to do the same.

Yes, I've heard about this, something came over the radio about it and how it has been hacked.
All of my friends at school are very angry about this as well :|

Well it's been on the news now, and apparently everybody is going to need to change there passwords, and watch out for dodgy Emails, the hackers got everything, addresses, credit card details, they got Everything.

If you have used Credit Cards, get to your Credit Card providers ASAP as you may need to cancel and replace them. :okay:

Facebook password changed already :D That is really dangerous stuff though. Imagine how much damage they could, and probably will do.

Your not wrong there mate, it is very bad news for Sony Corp, this is the sort of hit on there reputation that they didn't want or need.
And now that they have been hacked in this way, they will almost want to restart from scratch and seriously upgrade there systems security.
This is 1 problem they can't just patch and move on from either, and that's going to cost them an awful lot of $$$ to fix.

a MASSIVE problem would be people who fileshared, as their info is on who knows how many playstations.

also they could think they are ok as they cancelled, but someone else who used their details hanst.
