Original 3DS was not actually 3D!

It has been revealed that Nintendo‘s new 3DS was never originally designed for the 3D format.

Speaking to Famitsu, the group manager of the 3DS project Hideki Konno revealed why 3D came into the company’s thinking.

2009 was the year that 3D really re-emerged, the release of James Cameron’s Avatar playing a massive role in generating interest in the format again, and it was the timing of this that resulted in Nintendo using the format in its latest mobile gaming device:

“From Nintendo’s perspective, they’ve released ’3D Hot Rally’ and the Virtual Boy, they’ve had a history of experimenting with 3D visuals.

“With this system, you could say the timing was just right for us. It was the right time to start thinking about using the latest in high-tech and try out glasses-free 3D.

“The technology we got to demo was really impressive, and starting in early 2009, we began to think that it was time to bring it to games.”

For some, the fact that the device’s USP is the 3D capability is more or less simply due to the current popularity of the format will be a bug bear. Many fans of Nintendo have voiced their opinion about the format, with some claiming they would rather have simply better graphics.

Whether or not Nintendo’s decision to make the switch to 3D capabilities will pay off will be interesting, but it is interesting to note that the tridimensional format wasn’t the only addition to the 3DS.

According to Konno the motion sensors and gyroscope were also absent from the original model, which poses an interesting question to those skeptical of the device’s 3D features, just what would the 3DS have offered had these changes not been made?

Nothing particularly exciting, that’s what.

This is big news, and they have a very good point!

If all the new stuff wasn't put in, what could the 3DS have to offer? Better graphics only?

Definitely unexpected news

I heard about this. I think it was meant to be like a box diorama style thing. If you tilt the 3DS forward, you could see stuff further behind what is already present on screen.

I think what Nintendo really got right is the 3DS ability to do 3D without 3D Glasses!

Penetration of 3D TV's have been lower than expected because many consumer see 3D as a gimmick and hate the idea of wearing glasses!

actually R-M-B there are TV's in Japan that are 3D that do not require glasses, but they have gone off to a horrible start, not selling many...

but to be fair they are pretty small TV's so you kind of have to admit that you wouldn't by a 22" TV...

Nintendo could make a huge entrance into TV markets if they apply the 3DS 3D technology just to a bigger screen. It would be awesome!

I think the idea of a 3D TV without glasses that can switch on and off the 3D effect like the 3DS will eventually become the norm sometime in the not too distant future!

This is crazy, i didn't know this! guess it was just lucky that it was sort of the third ds.

yeah the biggest part is the fact that glasses wont be needed to show the game in 3d, which just blows my mind, i don't know how they do it.

Same here Brett. What astounds me even more, is that people know hot to program for it and actually make the games themselves on 3D.

And those Augmented Reality Cards are bloody insane!
