went into sheffield city centre the other day - first time this year, cos i usually go to meadowhall - and really wish i hadnt!

i think im a fairly charitable person, but the amount of chuggers - charity muggers - that try to pin you down and get your bank details off you is appalling!! i managed to dodge the nspcc and wateraid one, only to get cornered by age uk and the rspca! it was mental, and i felt like such stingy git (which im not!!) especially when the nspcc ones start following you and saying stuff like 'so its ok for kids to be neglected and abused'? i was horrified ... just like all the other people who were doing their utmost to just go about their daily business and avoid these emotional blackmailers!!!

cant remember being approached when i was in aus ... do you have similar chuggers over there?

:flowers:

you can complain to the charity itself. I know of someone who has had to complain to cerebra (not sure of spelling) after getting a very rude cold caller on behalf of the charity.

That is disgusting behaviour and totally unendorsed by the charity, you really need to complain about it.

It is the same over here although I do find it a tad worse with lots of different stalls selling raffle tickets for lots of little fundraisers for prizes that no one seems to win

the amount of chuggers - charity muggers
Not heard that expression before but it's very apt.

It's difficult to go to any sort of large store nowadays without being acosted.....and yes, sometimes quite rudely.
These people have no idea what a persons circumstances are or how they already support charities so I find it out of order for them to try to impose themselves upon someone.

What has made it even worse for me is that I read a report some time back into how a lot of charities have sort of gone semi-professional in their charity collection methods. They now sub contract donation collections to third parties who are trained professional collectors.

So it is quite possible that you will see the same people collecting for different charities. Same goes for those phone calls which are actually from professional call centres and not from the actual charities themselves.

The end result of all this shenanigans is that the charities receive very little of the money collected and it could be as low as 10% by the time fulltime wages, business expenses and profits are taken by various contractors and intermediaries.

I've become harder now so when I get the phonecall for an extremely worthwhile cause (aren't they all?) I ask how much they are earning to make these calls and how do they feel about spending precious charity money on the phonecalls. They usually hang up without answering.

My charity donations tend to be to local causes now and to ones where I can be pretty certain the money will be used correctly.

That's appalling and I'd definitely complain to the charities concerned. I can't say I've ever been accosted like that. I've had the odd 'chugger' - great expression, not heard it before, asking for help but as soon as I say 'sorry, I give to a particular group of charities' they back off and apologise. If one of them came after me saying stuff like that, I'd be really angry and tell then exactly where they were going wrong.

nope, never had a problem with them. I usually see a stand for something in the mall, but if they ask I just stop and say "sorry, but I have 4 children to support" they always smile and say something cheerful, never any hard sell.

I would imagine that the charity concerned would be ropable if they found out that someone was doing that in their name, tell them and make yourself feel good :)

Get them all the time, the worst one was a woman collecting for disabled kids so they could play sport and sarcastically offered to 'buy one of the cars' when I said we couldnt afford it.

I have since mentioned to them for their disabled kids wanting to do sport, to buy them a bloody football and let them play catch. I give to the Salvos or Cancer Research but knock on my door begging for money and quote disabled kids or starving animals at me and I will become very nasty with you.

I donate when I want to and where I want to and the minute you start knocking on my door with a kiddie/animal guilt trip is when I very abruptly stop caring.

Mabel barks at anyone that comes near the house, and I have a sign on the door saying beware of the dogs.

If anyone knocks asking for money for whatever charity, I dont open the flyscreen, and tell them I cant open the door as the dogs are vicious. I do the same with the Jehova's Witnesses and anyone else who knocks to annoy me.

Its great, Daisy and Mabel are the sookiest labradors ever, but they have the loudest deepest barks and sound seriously scary.

Actually, speaking of Jehova's witness, I met two young girls, well early 20s, on hols and they were Jehovas Witnesses. I was very surpirsed to see them getting drunk every night and chatting up the local Fijians. I spoke to them and they were actually quite nice and normal, and as they were from London, I had a great chat with them and now have them on Facebook. They said they never door knock, but admitted that many of them do. They were on their way back from teaching the bible in Ecquador.

Its funny really, after all my moaning about the JWs, now I have two as friends on FB - hahaha

Well I guess you know they are never going to be after your blood.

Actually since being home I think I've been adopted by Amelia.
Amelia is a very pleasant young lady of about 19 years old and I think she has made me one of her targets to join the JW faith.

I am quite frank with her on my views and opinions and we have very open discussions about nearly everything. Differing opinions on some things but we never get heated exchanges so it's actually very good.
She has been back twice so far with different partners.

My mums old neighbours were Jovos, they were brilliant with her, took her shopping and always made sure she was ok (I have no idea how they did it, she drives me nuts when she wants to go somewhere), they were always up for a drink or 3 and were really nice people. One of the daughters has just got married to a bloke she met on the internet, he's lovely too. But they all door knock. I recon if muslims suddenly started door knocking, then religious door knocking would soon be illegal.

I made the mistake of opening the door to some last year, but have to say they were extremely nice. they always knock now to see how I am lol, oh well at least someone cares - no hard sell at all just 2 very nice ladies. But they are not all like that I know.

what annoys me now is this idea of some charities to give each month, I am quite happy to put in the collection box if I feel it's a charity I want to support yet I don't want to be tied into it - the Air Ambulance is one, but I won't be tied into a DD for monthly support. I think it's a raffle ticket so when I asked if I could buy one and donate some cash there and then it was a no - no collection tin - so yep it might have only a few quid but that's a few they lost out on
