So today I got my pay for my first week and it was only half what I was expecting.

It turns out that the first two days I worked for free. It was called 'work placement training' .. is this legal ???

It also turns out that I won't be getting a contract .. nor a job description .. is this legal too ??

They're also not deducting tax. Maybe it's because I don't earn enough :confused:

It costs me $15 a day in petrol and I have to pay for my own uniform of their choice, I worked from 9am to 5.30pm with only a half hour break at 12.45pm and only managed to grab one drink in the morning when one of the girls got me one .... I'm not sure this working lark is worth it !

Wow...

My Sister in Law started a couple of part time jobs recently, both of them involved compulsory 'initial training sessions', for about 10 hours total. I did say that she may not be paid for that, but she was.

I will say that your employer appears to be, as far as I am concerned, in the gutter level of employers.

Most employers that I have seen will pay you for initial training, and will provide or pay for compulsory uniforms.

I am not sure these days of the legality of not doing so, but their actions do NOT bode well for the future.

Keep your eyes for open for an alternative job.

That's what I was thinking .. the girls who currently work there warned me that the employers were tight from the start. Even the hourly rate is $2 less for them than a trainee anywhere else. I think I'll give it a month so I can get it on my resume then look for something 'closer'

which seems to say that I can't be made to work for free ... although I'm not keen on the word 'generally'
