A report in the Sunday Mail paper today, showed example premiums for 4 example areas, with 26 different insurers.

The lowest average of the four was $416.80 (Progressive Direct) and the highest $965.79 (St George bank)

St George Bank was the most expensive insurer for 3 of the 4 examples, the 4th example they were 2nd most expensive. Westpac, the owner of St George was the most expensive in that one.

Progressive Direct was the cheapest in two examples, with The Buzz and Bingle covering that spot for the other two.

The Cheapest Five average were:
$416.80 Progressive Direct
$419.81 Bingle
$442.59 The Buzz
$480.38 QBE
$552.50 Coles

The Five most expensive on average, were:
$857.48 ANZ
$938.60 Bendigo Bank
$938.60 CGU
$942.01 Westpac
$965.79 St George Bank

Budget Direct was 9th Cheapest.

BUT.... The cover given by each may have various differences. Protected NCD, Car Hire, etc.
This was not specified.
The quotes do appear to be based on a 31 yr old with a 2005 Toyota Corolla

The cheapest cover was in Bracken Ridge 4017 at $277.43
The most expensive was in Auchenflower 4066 at $1,008.67

i was gobsmacked to find that when we moved last year, to a 'better' area, my car insurance actually went up!! i was parking on a drive, compared to parking on the street, plus this is a better area crime wise than where we moved from. my renewal policy was about £800, so i searched and got one for about £450 thats with 3 yrs ncd ... but the quotes i had went up to around £6k+ which is quite normal!!! i wonder why they bother putting them on, cos who in their right mind is going to pay £6k+ for a car worth about £1k ... !

You do have to be careful with Oz car insurance. A couple of years ago I got some alternative quotes and there was about $200 difference! BUT they didn't cover me on gravel roads, and there were a few other bits and pieces that weren't covered. We have quite a few gravel roads around here so it really wasn't worth taking the risk!
