Electricity costs of older appliances

We were given a second hand freezer a little while ago, and we put it to immediate use, but I have now decided that it may have to go after all.

Old appliances do not run as economically as newer ones, pretty obvious really, but I did the maths, using a Power Mate meter, and made the decision that it may not stay.

This (very) old 300 litre chest freezer (although in excellent condition) will use about $230 of electricity each year.
A brand new 300 litre chest freezer will use about $ 73 of electricity each year.

Our existing 150 litre Chest freezer (1 year old) uses $ 45 of electricity each year.

It seems we are paying out an extra $185 per year for an extra 150 litres of freezer space.

I may just buy another 150 litre unit, and run both. It will pay for itself in 3 years.

(2nd hand unit) 3 years at $230 per year = $690

(Another New unit) 3 years x 2 at $45 per year = $270 plus cost of new freezer = $311 = $581

Actually it balances out at about 26 months.

I've just realised, my current electricity costs for fridge and freezers is running at $561 per year,
$300 Fridge freezer in kitchen.
$ 45 1 year old small freezer in garage.
$216 old larger chest freezer in garage.

I need to rethink this...
