Tiger Airways refund

We are due to be going to Melbourne for a long weekend soon flying with Tiger Airways. Obviously this is all hanging in the air a bit atm. I read online today that Tiger are offering 'no penalty' refunds for all flights booked in August. I'm wondering, should we get a refund for our flights now, which would mean cancelling our trip altogether as we can't afford the extra money with a different carrier but would give me some money for my upcoming trip to the UK, or should we wait until 1st August when there will presumably be an announcement regarding the grounding, but then run the risk of getting caught up in a melee of people trying to get refunds should the grounding be extended?

Opinions please. And I'd like to apologise to Hevs for even thinking about this :kiss:

I would get a refund now. I doubt Tiger will be back up and running in August :no:

Have you checked flights with other airlines to Melbourne, maybe put the Tiger refund towards those flights if you got some at a reasonable cost.

The answer to that is, how would you feel if come the weekend you were suposed to be there, if Tiger are flying, how would you feel if you'd cancelled?

If you can't afford to use an alternative carrier then stick with them on the off chance that they fly, although if they are "offering" refunds now on August travel I'd think they are fairly sure that they won't be flying. The other problem is if this enforced grounding causes them to collapse, getting your money back then will be harder, if you paid via credit card you will be refunded by them, but it may be worth asking the cc company if they will still refund if you hold off cancelling now.

Its a total unknown and IMO totally unneccessary.

I just dont understand why they are still grounded, they are the budget Singapore airlines, so surely they know what they are doing? I just dont get it at all :no:

Australian safety standards are not as high as some other countries, especially the EU, for example Garuda are allowed to fly in and out of Australia, they're not allowed into the UK possibly the whole EU and haven't been for as long as I can remember. Tiger are part owned by Singapore Airlines, but, SQ announced in May that they plan to launch a new budge airline within the next 12 months to fly medium to long haul flights, that may or may not include Australia, if it does then again it may not be best news for Tiger and it may end up swallowed by the new company. But thats just pure speculation on my part. I think its strange that the grounding is still ongoing, with the amount of money being lost on an hourly basis you get your arse in gear pretty quick to sort it out. The current CEO for Aus will be replaced at the end of this month, maybe they are just waiting for him to go and use him as a scapegoat, he used to be the sales manager for Dan Air in Aberdeen about 25 years ago and played in the same brass band as I did, so I do feel a little bit sorry for him.

They were told by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) to sort out some problems, but didn't, so were grounded.

April 21 2011
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) issued Tiger with a show-cause notice on March 23 and gave the airline 21 days to respond, this was believed to be centred on aircraft maintenance and pilot training standards.

July 2nd 2011
CASA imposed a week-long ban on Tiger on July 2 because it believed the budget airline posed a "serious and imminent risk" to air safety.

July 6th 2011
CASA applied to the Federal Court to have the suspension of Tiger Airways flights extended until August 1 2011.

They have announced today that they have employed a former Qantas pilot instructor to get them back in the air pronto.

BUT I still dont see why they are STILL grounded? Your not telling me that all of their pilots got there licences off the back of cereal packets? The planes I have flown in with them are (or seem to be) very modern etc. However if ground checks are sloppy, then maybe that would answer it, but I dont get the cageyness, why isnt anything being reported etc? Its just strange! The only difference between them on the outside is that the check in area is a shed lol!

I have my suspitions but would not air them on an open forum.

But a question I keep asking myslef is, it's only their domestic services which are grounded so what is the difference between an aircraft flying between 2 Australian cities and flying between Singapore and an Australian city?

It's not the first time it's happened though, Ansett were grounded and went out of business costing hundreds of jobs.

A worthwhile read about Ansett:

12th April 2001 - CASA director Mick Toller, defends Ansett grounding, but ends by saying " My absolute conviction is that the aircraft that are flying around, as of tomorrow, throughout Australia, are totally safe."

Ansett went into liquidation on 12 September 2001, after being 100% owned by Air New Zealand from February 2000 to September 2001, when the NZ Government bailed out Air NZ, but cut Ansett loose with no financial backing.

I always wonder what would have happened if the Singapore Airlines offer to buy Ansett had been allowed.

Think I'll defo be looking into getting a refund. Especially after Lynn's fab idea last night. Cancel and get a refund now, then IF Tiger do get up and running again at the beginning of August then they are bound to be offering discount fares to entice people back, so we could always re book.
