following on from the electricty thread, was wondering how our tax/rates and water charges vary?

as you probably remember uk council tax is based on the value of your property, with the bands being set by the council and so vary wildly around the country - im band A here in sheffield and pay about £986 per year. same rate as we paid in our other house (a council property).
arent aus rates based on land size?

our water rates are about £445, compared to the £120 a year we paid in the other house ... we used just as much water!
a friend nearby went onto a water meter hoping to save some money, and now pays nearly twice as much as the £445 he used to pay! and theres only him and his girlfriend ... :S

what with rent and tv licence (now about £150 a year) most (about 90%) of my monthly income goes on the bills ... :no:

I had a look where i did my nurse training - uxbridge in nw london, and they pay less council tax than i do in sheffield!
And hammersmith where i worked when i qualified pay even less!!!
and posh Kensington and Chelsea pay around £200 per year less at each band level than we do!!

I think Sheffield city council is robbing us blind! :omg: wish i hadnt looked now, depressed me no end!!! :no:

For my house in Mission Beach we pay around $1000 a year and that includes water. As the house isn't finished though it is still classed as an building site so the rates are slightly lower but only about $300 for rubbish collection. That money also includes our water rates as it's mixed into to the council rates. There is no Tv licence here but then all the channels show adverts. The only major expense we have is the electricity bill as we're not on mains gas here so that is still heats the water etc.

They are charged in different ways so for comparison purposes it's best to lump the Council and Water rates together.

These were mine:

AU = AUD 2295

UK = GBP 1476

That actually works out to an exchange rate of $1.55 which is similar to the current rate.

However the UK figure is from 2004 so needs to be adjusted by the last 7 years increases!

Goal post have been moved for me.
All previous rates were based on ULV but from this year will be based on Site Valuations.

Effectively the whole of my estate has jumped a banding so from now on my rates will always be higher because that base rateable figure has been increased.

I want to swap bills. My water/sewage rates bill is $939.90, that's for the year and includes no consumption whatsoever. Rates bill due soon and won't be pretty, they've announced that this year you can pay fortnightly with no penalty so the bill can't be an easy one to digest :she:
