The newspaper today, in the report about Brisbane being the 14th most expensive city, really got me wound up... http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/brisbane-rated-14th-most-expensive-city-in-global-cost-of-living-survey/story-e6freoof-1226090215998
They compare Coles prices to the Park Slope Food Coop in Brooklyn !!!! I suppose if no one knows the Park Slope Food Coops buying conditions, then, maybe they will think what they are expected to think. The Park Slope Food Coops buying conditions ? You must be a paid up member of the coop. You must register for and attend a New Member Orientation. You must provide proof of your identity and address. You must select your working times. You don't get paid for working there. You must not miss more than two shifts. You must work for 2 hours and 45 minutes once every four weeks.
And THAT entitles you to BUY from them !! The Newspapers compare that to COLES !!! I'd expect that from the News of the World..... Anyway, when we have Bananas growing in QLD we get them for about $1.49 to $1.99 anyway, about the same as the Park Slope Food Coop. AND our kiwi fruit is the same price as theirs. Rant over.... |

I'm with you on this one. I think it must be the constant pressure on journalists to come up with interesting stories that has gradually distorted reporting over a number of years. There was always a small gutter press sensationalising something to sell their paper but in the main you could rely on most newspaper reports being factually accurate. The industry seems to have evolved into a state where it is now difficult to accept a report like this on face value anymore. Unfortunately journalists have learnt the art of deception wherein they don't tell lies but equally they don't tell the whole truth. It is now necessary to probe and question the raw data they use in preparing their stories. |

I'm doing more of it too. The local paper here makes me laugh. Every few weeks they write about some event or other that Cairns has won which will bring X amount of millions of dollars into the local economy. If it was so, then Cairns would be one of the most affluent cities in the world by now. Of course they base everything on spurious figures when you delve a bit. Average this and average that. Assuming this and assuming that. It's like winning the lottery without buying a ticket. :D The latest one was some $8million because a US warship was going to spend a week in port. 750 crew all looking to spend their hard earned. Oops, she byepassed Cairns and went to Townsville after a last minute change of plans. |
