well done Bix, must be really hard - I've never smoked but saw my dad struggle to give it up after 40 odd years of smoking, but he did it and he hasn't touched a fag for over 11 years now.

Thank you everyone.

I'm giving it a good go.
The first 3 weeks are apparently the real test.

It's about 40 years for me too Debs. :ooer:

Several people over the years had not realised I was a smoker as I've always been very considerate as to where and when I lit up even before it became such a taboo thing to do.

How are you doing it Bix? Self-control/patches/gum? We used the Champix tablets and it was soooo easy. Never struggled, never have the urge for one, no side effect when stopping, and never ever think about it unless it's mentioned.

Self control method Anne.
I read Allen Carr's book "Easy Way To Stop Smoking"

It approaches the topic in a different way than I've seen before and turns traditional methods and beliefs on their heads somewhat.

There's no big stick saying don't do it.
It enlightens you to the true addictive nature and psychological dependance and helps you self address those issues.

Know your enemy type thing.

I am one of those who didn't realise. You were a very considerate smoker. As soon as you realise you can't remember exactly how many days it's been, is the day you've beaten it. Keep up the good work.

Well done Bix .
Will have a look for that book.
Matt has been smoking for years & has tried to give up many times .
Remember him starting again one time & he thought if he had lots of bonfires at the end of the garden i wouldnt smell the smoke
Would love him to give up but has to be up to him.

I got it from the Book Depository which is as cheap as I found it anywhere. Free postage with them too:-

Yes, it most definitely has to be his decision to take the plunge but perhaps you could encourage him to read the book.
He should not stop smoking whilst reading it so there's nothing for him to lose or feel deprived about.

Irrespective of the outcome afterwards I'm sure he will look at smoking in a whole different light which will help at some time in the future. It doesn't beat you round the head with a guilt trip or patronize the reader. Allen Carr himself was a 100 a day chain smoker who quit so he knows what it's like.

I think a book like this should be in the school curriculum for young teenagers. If it was most of them wouldn't take up the weed in the first place.....knowledge is power.

well done Bix .. keep it up. Different things work for different people. My hubby read the same book and thought nothing of it .. then tried champix and has never smoked since for which I am soooo grateful. I went cold turkey !
