OK so now that Alex is earning money for the next few months until he goes back to Uni, I really feel it's time he should be paying some rent. More for teaching him to pay his own way and budget rather than us actually having the money. So what's the go? What's a reasonable amount to be asking? It's a long time since our others were teenagers and they were pretty much off out the door as soon as they were earning anyway so I really can't remember. |

When we bought here we were going to buy a house on the South side of the city but it would have meant a commute (not in UK terms) for all of us. The lads persuaded us to buy a more expensive house on the North side of the city which is convenient to virtually everything. They said they would pay us more rent if we did that and so that's what we did. They are now 23 and 25 year old teenagers and have settled and reasonable jobs. 5 years later they just woke up to the fact that although everything has gone up in cost their rent has stayed the same. I am glad to say they have voluntarily increased what they pay which helps a lot seeing as I am still unemployed. There is no fair amount when it comes to kids as you can look at it in many ways but usually at some stage they will leave the nest. What will it cost for them to live in the way they are accustomed to? What will it cost them to survive minimalistically? The difference in those figures may be large but so to the satisfaction level. All I know is that whilst they are living with us I reckon they are at least 2 thirds better off than if they were out doing the real thing. |

No idea, I just know my selfish teens would refuse to pay me. In the summer after I finsihed school, I worked full time and my mother took half mpay for rent and food. I was horrified and moved out and then very quickly realised I had even less money when I had paid rent and bills myself  And just before I got married she gave me all the money back, plus extra, which was fantastic. So I am not charging my teens rent as yet, but also wont be giving them anything later on either  |

my friend charges her 2 teens who are back from uni and both working ft 2/3 of what they were paying while in uni accomodation, in their case about £60/week. my brother charges his 20 yr old son about half his weekly wage ... and have said they are putting 25% of that into an account to go towards his deposit for a house ... he earns about £180-220/wk as a football coach, so £100 goes to mum and dad who then put about £35-30 of it in an account. my mum didnt teach me any money sense, hence the reason why i have none  |

I have always told my kids since they could talk that I would charge them full rent (the going rate if renting a room in a shared house) the minute they leave full time education. Harsh maybe but it will keep them in education as long as possible and prepare them for when they leave. Unknown to them I will save it all and they'll get it all back when they buy their first house |

I have no idea. Heather only works around 15/20 hours a week and whilst we don't charge her rent, if she's out or finishing work, she always phones and asks if we need anything and will then buy it. She also drives Abs around if I can't. I think that's enough at the moment. |
