Electricity Prices 2003 to 2011

Just got my latest Electricity Bill in.... Electricity price per kWh has gone down...

On the 26th May 2011 it went down from $0.20210 to $0.1941 per kWh. !!!

Too much for my brain to handle... a price drop in electricity rates ???

However, my annual Electric bills for the last 9 years, ending in May each year.

$1,088.55 2004
$1,219.35 2005
$1,319.11 2006
$1,476.42 2007
$1,841.80 2008
$1,950.64 2009
$1,535.09 2010
$2,149.46 2011

I can't blame it all on the prices though. We have much more in use in the way of Electrical appliances now.

In 2004 we used 9,327 kWh of power
In 2011 we used 11,329 kWh of power

Consumption up 21%
Cost up 130%

And our income ? Only 34% increase.

In real terms, the actual electricity cost per kWh has risen 62.6%, about double the rate of incomes.

That jump from $1,535.09 in 2010 to $2,149.46 in 2011 is probably down to 3 computers being used a lot instead of just one. My PC set up costs almost $300 per year to run on its own, so the extra $600 for the year is mainly the other 2 computers. Actually I have miscounted, there are 3 more computers in use now.

The prices I have shown include the 10% GST.

We are 100% Electric, no gas, so my $2,149.46 in 2011, would equate to a UK combined Gas and Electric bills for the year. About $537 pq or in UK costs:

At the old FX rate 2.5:1 = £215 pq
at current FX rate 1.5:1 = £358 pq

Was this your bill ?

If the above is correct, then your cost was an average of £0.1423 per kWh

My last bill was an average of A$0.1987 per kWh
or in GBP terms
At the old FX rate 2.5:1 = £0.0795 per kWh
at current FX rate 1.5:1 = £0.1325 per kWh

ABC what company did you use for your solar panels. We are seriously thinking of getting them, as our electricity bills are ridiculously high, last one $600 for three months.

I would rather put this money towards repayments for the solar panels than continue paying Electricity Companies.

I think it depends which power company you are with too as to what price you pay ... :S
there is always fierce competition between the utility companies here for your business, then you get tied in to them for at least 12 months like we are with npower.

reminds me, when we first moved in and got our first bill it was astronomical compared with what we had been paying at our old (much smaller) house. got collared by one of the sales men in Asda who waxed lyrical about how i was being way overcharged and that our supplier was robbing us blind etc etc ... when he did a check to switch us over turns our we were already with them - so they were slagging off their own company!!!

I used Hembrows for the panels. They also did my sisters house.
http://www.solarpowerhembrows.com.au/solar-power/index.htm

They did a good job, and came back to check something when there was a problem, but it turned out NOT to be the panels after all. (edited as I left out a very important word)

A 1.5kw system will make a small hole in a $600 power bill, but it would be interesting to see what size system would be needed to reduce that power bill to zero.

Yes thats what we want, a zero power bill. I dont really care about selling back electricity to the grid as am sure the gov will do away with that in the future. I just want enough panels to generate enough electricity for our needs now and in the future.

Will have to start getting some quotes, so thanks for the recommendation ABC, will def get a quote from them.

Thanks :flowers:

I suppose that is in fact a dual system to cope with hot water and normal electricity.

I think you'll be looking at several thousands Mel.....3 kWh.....probably over $15k.

Cheaper to sell the kids off. :D
