Silicone...

Its the equivalent to using a mineral oil in a face cream. Feels lush and gives lots of silkyness, however coats your hair (or face in creams case, called slip and glide, in the industry) so it will feel soft. The result is a quick build up of a coating that you cant shif for love nor money. Your hair will go greasy, your skin will go spotty.

Dom has really greasy hair and I have him using a clarifying shampoo twice a week, I can tell if he doesn't..... Yuck!

I don't buy shampoo and conditioner from the supermarket anymore I always buy it from hairmart, in a huge container then refill the shower bottles, heaps cheaper.

so true and all the ones that say "adds gloss, shine, etc" are the worse ones - incs pantene, herbal essences, garnier fructise (so I am told by a hairdresser)

I wash my (naturally greasy) hair every day with clarifying shampoo (Treseme) and don't use conditioner. My hair feels soft and clean, but on the odd occassion if I do use conditioner it feels clogged.

:blushing: its a treseme shampoo ive used that turned my hair greasy! for normal hair ...

the one prior to that was aussie shampoo from boots ... as well as herbal essences.

all needed me to wash every day practically.

i do find that my diet affects my hair ... if im on a bad week and eat crap, my hair is lank and greasy. whereas if im eating healthily, lots of salads etc, my hair stays nice and shiny for a couple of days.

thank you :flowers:

Try something like vosene (sp) or even baby shampoo if you have lank greasy hair, it will help clarify.

Yep, Pantene is the total worse, its shocking!

OR, better still, treat youself and go into a salon and buy some decent stuff. The price will shock you, but you use half the amount AND your hair will be a whole new experience. Its the only thing I'm remotely "Snobish" about, even when I was hiding the bills, I still couldnt go past decent hair/ skin products.

BTW, I tried the Aldi cream... TOTAL pants, had a face full of spots within 3 days...AND my facial foaming gel wouldnt foam (Sure sign of mineral oils!)

I use sulphate free shampoo and conditioner now and love them. I buy them from Strawberry.net as they are cheaper than getting them from my hairdresser. I use the Aldi face creams and love them too, never had a problem with spotty skin, sometimes use Avon face creams as really like them as well, but they are more expensive than Aldi.

Years ago when I had money I used Clarins products for my skin and absolutely loved them and still drool when I walk past a Clarins counter

I love the Aldi face creams! However, I've also been known to clean my face with nail varnish remover on a fairly regular basis so perhaps my opinion doesn't count.

I tried that Fruictus shite once, it felt like I'd washed my hair in orange juice, talk about gunky

But what are they testing? Theres not a lot in the way of active ingrediants in there. Theres plenty of slip and glide though. If you're not getting spots watch out for Millia...they are the dry persons equivalent of spots.

PEN! :omg:

Heather, hairmart is the hair and beauty wholesalers. You need a card to go and now they have changed their cards so they are photo ones so you can't give someone else your card. I bought 5litres of conditioner today, it's one for coloured hair called Natural Look Colourance, it may be shite I don;t know but I've been using it for a couple of years and really like it. The conditioner cost $30, I didn;t check the price of the shampoo cos I'm ok for that for now but from memory it's over $20 but under $25. I don't even know how that compares with supermarket prices these days.

MP you should give yourself a slap!!!!

I'm always amazed at the number of people I get when we're working, who, when they ask me how to remove their kids tatt quickly and I answer anything with alcohol such as rubbing alcohol or hand sanitsier, they say, I'll use nail polish remover. NNNNnnnnnooooooo

What about mineral oil Lynn? Something like baby oil? would that work? That works a treat for fake eyelashes :giggle:

Yeah, thats the other option. Alcohol works best as the paint is alcohol based so alcohol this it right down and it cleans off easily, oils tend to smear it all over the place and it's an altogether messier experinece, but it does work.

Hmm, so alcohol may take off the lashes better, that said would CANE if it went in your eye!

I have been researching the Aldi creams and there are A LOT! The one I have gets the worse reviews (why doeant that surprise me  ) BUT am going to keep my eye out for the collegen one and see if thats different, everyone who is going on about them cant be wrong :dunno:

I use the cheapest shampoo that they sell in Coles (it's called Fruits or something) and I stopped buying condition months ago as I found it unecessary - the shampoo does a good enough job.

I did try Fructis when it first came out and it made my hair horrible - TBH I'd rather just buy a cheap one than spend extra on a branded one that's probably exactly the same!

I don't know lol, just seen it in some of the mags and have no idea of length of time
as for Millia I suffer from them and have done since my early twenties, i use the daily micro thingy from Dermologica (I admit not every day), but still have them and have grown to live with them

I use the Aldi day cream, the Aldi night cream, and the Aldi serum stuff under make up and I have no problems whatsoever with spots or milia, but I never did. My skin is dry and tends to flake a bit but its been fine since using Aldi products.

I also use Avon face cream, the one in a big tub with a green lid and its fab. I put it on when my skin is feeling particularly tight and dry and it sorts it out almost immediately.

If I won the lottery I would go back to using Clarins products but for now I am quite happy with Aldi and Avon

I don't know why it freaks people out somuch :blushing: I've been using it since I was about 17 and if there's one good thing about me is the skin on my face. The rest is as dry as but my face is in really good nick (considering the age).

I don't know why either.... TBH I don't see much difference between the cheapest cream and something expensive, like Clinique - other than it leaves me more money to spend on other stuff!!

Avon's quite good for cheap face cream too. Love it.

Fructis is what I'd call a cheap one

There is a world of difference in the amount of cheap ingredients that they use in low end prducts, (and the build up of them is potentially fairly harmful) especially if you have skin problems

Clinique is only good for oily skin, its too perfumed for dry skin.

However as I keep harping on, cheap face creams usually only contain slip and glide in the way of minral oils...HOWEVER, I have been researching the Aldi ones and theres some good things in there too, so the jurys out whilst I look further. However Nivea, Avon and "Baby" lotions etc are on the avoid list for me and my family

I have pinched this as it is pretty much, word for word, something I support and agree with 100%..................(Probaby O'Hippy will too!)

The human skin is the largest organ in the body and must have proper nutrition to carry out its many important functions. We should be just as concerned about what goes on our skin as what we eat and drink.

The fact is that most of the ingredients in the products we use are absorbed by the skin into the body. Large cosmetic companies are continuing to use synthetic and petrochemical ingredients in personal care products. Pick up any bottle of lotion, cream, shampoo, conditioner, or toothpaste in your house right now and see how many natural ingredients they contain. Based on the FDA's personal care products packaging standards, the further the name of an ingredient is down the list on a products' label, the lesser of that ingredient the product contains. If this is true how much synthetic material have you fed your skin today? The skin acts as a filter for the body for even the smallest molecule not seen by the naked eye is being absorbed and in some cases is accumulating in our bodies.

First we will explore mineral oil, a common ingredient in commercial lotions, creams and baby care products. Mineral oil is clear, liquid oil with no scent and will not spoil. It is produced as a byproduct of the distillation of gasoline from crude oil. Mineral oil is leftover liquid, and because it is abundant, it is very inexpensive. In fact, it is more expensive to dispose of mineral oil, than to purchase it.

Mineral oil is the main ingredient in may baby care items as well. Baby oil, Vaseline (petroleum jelly), baby wash liquid soap, and baby lotions all contain mineral oil as a key ingredient. As mentioned above, manufacturers can buy it very inexpensively and it will not spoil. The problem is that mineral oil is foreign to the human body and has many harmful effects, especially in infants. Some of the effects of mineral oil may be a little surprising.

Mineral oil acts as a thin layer on the skin. It is difficult to absorb and clogs the pores, which slows the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins. Remember, the skin is the body’s largest organ and plays an important role in maintaining overall health! Once the oil is absorbed, it is broken down by the liver and passes through the intestinal tract, it will absorb all of the fat-soluble vitamins found there. It is essentially stealing important vitamins from the body, which the body will not be able to replace. This can eventually lead to nutritional deficiencies. Studies have also shown forms of pneumonia caused by mineral oil decreasing lung function, known as lipoid pneumonia. Because of these dangers, the medical community has condemned the use of mineral oil taken orally or as an ingredient in medications.

There are those who say that mineral oil applied to the skin is perfectly safe as the grade used in cosmetics and skin care products is distilled and refined. Well, I say gasoline is distilled and refined too but I would not want to apply it to my skin and for sure would not want it on my baby's skin. Ask them to provide you with a list of the nutrients and vitamins contained in mineral oil also ask what plant, herb, tree or flower is mineral derived from (specify mineral oil content, not the product or other ingredients it may contain). If you love the stuff that's fine we not trying to discourage you from drinking or rubbing with it if you so desire as we are a free society. Did all the warnings about skin cancer 20 - 30 years ago stop people from sun bathing, I think not?

 the allergy specialist got on his soap box about the Body Shop stuff and other 'beauty' products. I have to admit I was quite shocked. One of his statements was 'have you seen what happens to a cucumber when you buy it and leave it on a shelf .. it rots !!! To enable TBS to market these products they have to stuff them full of fragrance and preservatives and these are no good for your skin' he then went on about the only products you need are a sunscreen and a moisturiser but I have to say I disagreed on that score because I definitely need shampoo, conditioner and a face wash if nothing else. He also named a number of other brands he deemed 'the pits'. Personally I love the E'spa products and they last me ages because I don't use much at all  I splashed out last year and have enough to last me a long time

... what does that lot mean!!????? ...

pen - the one time i used nail polish remover on my skin was when i had neither my contacts in nor my glasses on and i picked up the worng bottle! had a rotten cold too so didnt even smell it before i put it on my skin - had a roaring allergic reaction to it and ended up cheeks that resembled a hamsters

I have had a face like a teenager for the last week and had no idea why, really big, sore spots, really unusual cos I don't often get a spot, also have a big dry patch on my chin which is even more weird as I don't have dry skin. BUT I am using different moisturiser, have been for the last 3-4 weeks, I bought it for John but he hated it so pinched mine leaving me to the cheap (on special) nivea stuff, which i guess is the cause of my skin problems. I mentioned to him the fact that they use miineral oils, he said that I may as well rub deisel on my face then went off to check the ingredients in the one he's using. According to him if there are any indredients in there that have benzyl anything in them then avoid them big time.......... but then he is an IT geek, how he knows about this stuff I have no idea
