Worried about Alex's new job.; Wondering if it's all a scam

Alex is so not street wise, trusts everyone and only sees the best in people.

Having been out of work for a few weeks he was dead excited to get an interview for a 'promotions' company up in the city. When he came back from the first interview (the day his car died on the way) he was still rather vague about what the company actually did. Then he was all excited to be called to go back up a couple of days later and was then thrilled to ring and say he'd got the job. Apparently it's to do with getting people to sign up for regular charity donations. He himself has bought the sales pitch when he was told he could earn up to $2k per week.

Hmmm, the 'job' entails going up to the office in the city for 10am, talking about goodness knows what then he and all the other youngsters split up into teams and go off to various suburbs around Perth. Now he HAS to go to work in smart business pants, shirt, tie and black shoes. But then when they go round the suburbs they change into trainers and charity t-shirt  He is only paid commission, no base rate. They door knock until 6pm, then travel back to the city to complete paperwork so he is not finishing work until nearly 7.30pm Even though he was practically in the next suburb to us today, he was not allowed to come straight home after, so he had a needless extra 2 hours on his day.

More and more is coming to light each day, and Alex is getting more and more defensive about telling us stuff. Worried and embarrassed in case he's cocked up I think. If someone signs up for $26 per month then Alex earns $50, $39 per month then $100, etc. Yesterday it came out that after 5 weeks that commission money goes down. Based on that they should know what they're doing by then so should be making more sales per day! Today it has been revealed that they company witholds some of the commission until payments from the customer have been made regularly for 3 months. Plus!!!!!! Some post arrived for Alex today. In it was an ABN number and a trading name of Adam Palmer. Alex did not apply for an ABN and has no idea who Adam Palmer is. After quizzing Alex he says he has signed some sort of contract but they have not given him a copy.

Alarm bells are ringing!

It isn't the The Storm Promotions Group is it ?

Some people reckon that 1 in 50 will do OK, the rest just drum up some money for the company with no employment costs.

I'm most concerned about the liability implications of Alex trading under the name Adam Palmer. What if this Adam Palmer goes tits up?

Tell him to get out now, the only person who will make any money out of this is the person who set the company up. Alex most likely wont see any money at all. Phone the ATO re the the Alex Palmer thing, or send it back to them stating person unknown.

Seriously this is one dodgy job and he needs to :bolt:

Definitely send the ABN letter back with a 'not known at this address' message, or ring them up. Totally different but we got tax stuff for someone we'd never heard of, not a previous owner, and they were really helpful because it seemed it was dodgy. As for the job, I have no idea. I'd want him to just walk away but without knowing what he signed he could be up for a charge for leaving early or something. :S

It appears this name is now linked to Alex, and any future problems with that trading entity, are his.

abr.business.gov.au

I would be very concerned, and would contact the Registrar of the Australian Business Register (ABR).

However, you will NEED to discuss this with Alex first. He would need to explain to the ABR how he was 'convinced' to set up this business name.

I've told Alex that he MUST get them to give him a copy of anything that he has signed, and that he is to get it today. He is so green and takes people's word for things :sigh:

Make sure you tell him he is not very different to many other young people.
We all start somewhere, and, as I tell my daughter, every mistake she makes is in reality just another lesson in her life's learning.

It is not an indication of her failure in any way.

It's not even 'young' people. How many 'adults' have been caught out by the Nigerian scammers etc????? It's in our nature to think good of people.

I agree it sounds well dodgy.

A chat with the FWO for guidance may be in order.
Possibly the fraud squad.

You are right there. I agreed to a roofing company to come and inspect my roof next week, and give me a free quote.......

My sister asked me what was wrong with me, when I told her !!

I am normally the one warning of these things. :(

I was about 30'odd when I got stung for about $5,000 in a Foreign Currency Leverage scam.

However, with a little help from Scotland Yard, the Australian Fraud Squad and Interpol, the money (a few million in total) was traced to properties in Switzerland, and after about 5 years, I got it all back.

It is embarrassing when you get caught in your own line of expertise

What charity is it? Does the charity check out?

The reason for his own abn is so he is liable for payroll tax not the charity. On the Adam Palmer thing does it also mention Alexs name? It could just be a mix up and he has got the wrong persons paperwork. He should talk to the people he works with and find out if they have received all this too.

But the main thing to check out is that the charity is legit and that the charity has employed this company on their behalf.

I hope he is still trying to find other jobs as nobody will stick this sort of rip off employment for more than a few weeks, these jobs take huge advantage of young people and usually lead nowhere.

Meant to say too, he HAS to ask for copies of anything he has signed and legally they HAVE to give him it. If they refuse to give him that then lock him in the house and don't let him work another second for these people as chances are if it's dodgy he will be legally responsible. Then contact today tonight or whoever, they'd love it

After much nagging, he brought home a copy of his contract which Terry will now spend the weekend ploughing through. Alex says that the other dudes name was a mix up. Trouble is, Alex is actually enjoying being with the people he is with and earning $800 this week. We'll wait and see how much money he actually gets when he gets paid. But even so, he's still not getting home until gone 8pm each night.

Enjoying and earning is a good combination

If it works out OK, and he gets paid, and the ABN error is fixed, then great.

If it goes wrong, and he learns something, then not too bad, as long as he loses nothing other than his time. :crossfingers:

Well he's still working there. First week got paid $650, this week been paid $590, that is after the 'bond' money has been kept back in case of cancellations. Hopefully this morning after HUGE amounts of nagging :she: he has rung and sorted the ABN and trading as issue. He's still putting in late days, but... just today has his car finally sorted so is not having to wait for public transport, so we'll see what time he gets home tonight. We have his contract in our possession and I'm tempted to go to Citizens Advice, or somewhere free, (I don't know any solicitors here) and get someone to run through it. However, he seems to be really enjoying himself, has been taken out for dinner by the boss the other night to a flash restaurant in the city because he is doing so well, and they are already talking about possibly making him a team leader which would earn him some commission from that. Sounds like some pyramid scheme thing to me. All I know is that for the first two weeks working he has brought home more money than me a fortnight
