Osama bin Laden is Dead

It is almost certain that Osama bin Laden is now dead.

DNA tests carried out on the body have confirmed that the body is Osama bin Laden, and these DNA tests have now been double checked.

It appears that he was killed sometime in the last week, with confirmation only recently issued.

This is not the first time that his death has been reported, but it does appear to be a more reliable report than usual.

good; good ridance to bad rubbish. just a pity he will never face any sort of justice for his crimes.

i am slightly worried about the potential backlash from his supporters though ...

I'm wondering if I'm the only person that thinks the Americans are mad. They are just as much extreme fundamentalists as the muslims are, did you see them all partying on tv, it was just the same footage as those of muslims burning the american flag after 9/11. without the robes and the burning flags obviously. I am soooo uneasy about this, I think the potential for backlash is huge and could result in many problems around the world.

I'm not for 1 minute saying he should not have been killed, he, like everyone else should have to pay for their crimes, but kill him and deal with it in a way that is not going to inflame every muslim extremeist on the planet. He was only 1 man (a pretty nasty one of course), but only 1 name in the cause they are fighting, there will be many more who will stand up to take his place and thats the scary bit. Obama is quoted in the press today as having said "the world is a safer place", eh no I don't think so. When I first saw the reaction of the American people my thought was "do they think that if someone killed Obama their whole country would crumble" I'd bet no, not for one second, so what on earth makes them think that killing 1 man is going to stop terrorism?

I'm not sad the man is gone, but I am sad about where it may lead.

This event, and the media involvement from even before the president spoke, has, in my opinion, been one attempt by media to get the attention for themselves, at any cost.

Bin laden was killed by a Drone missile, according to the first reports, and in Afghanistan. But in reality it was a bullet in Pakistan.

Obama is quoted as saying, in his speech, "the world is a safer place", yet in the transcript of his speech, the word safer only appears once.
Quote:

That is the story of our history, whether it's the pursuit of prosperity for our people, or the struggle for equality for all our citizens; our commitment to stand up for our values abroad, and our sacrifices to make the world a safer place.

Full text of Obama's speech on bin Laden's death: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20058783-503544.html

He did however say: Yet his death does not mark the end of our effort. There's no doubt that al Qaeda will continue to pursue attacks against us. We must -- and we will -- remain vigilant at home and abroad.

A search for the phrase "the world is a safer place" came up with this:
New Zealand Prime Minister John Key said Monday the world was a safer place without Osama bin Laden.

The BBC quotes: US President Barack Obama has hailed the death of al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden as a "good day for America," saying the world is now a safer and a better place. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-13261064

He did say a "good day for America", but I haven't heard him say the world is now a safer and a better place.

I am currently more annoyed with the media than normal.

I agree with you lynn ... finding the whole thing rather difficult to get on with in my head. i thought what someone put on facebook with martin luther kings quote about not rejoicing in a death, no matter how deserved it is - was rather good. I agree wholehearted with its philosophy.

:sigh: dangerous times ahead i think.

edited to say, heres the quote; "I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
