Petrol Prices - we are getting it cheap...

We should be paying another 30 cents per litre for Petrol. So if the Australian Dollar reverts back to its more normal rate, be prepared for higher petrol prices, by about that 30 cents for each litre, just to get back to normal.

Look at these graphs of Petrol price changes from 2009 to 2011

im thinking of getting rid of my car ... costs me £80/month in insurance, approx £120/month in petrol, road tax is £130/yr ... plus all the extra cost of running the bloomin thing, given its 10 years old and has 80,000 miles on the clock ... definately a luxury now.

Yikes !! That's £1,090 a year !! Just for Insurance and Tax

Mine costs $1,186 (£740) for those two expenses. I suppose I still compare to the $3 to the £ days (your £1,090 would have been nearer $3,000)

Just checked our last months petrol...
Ours is currently $130 pm for my wife's car, and $205 for mine. Now that has me puzzled... she commutes by car every day to Brisbane City, and I just potter around locally to the shops and school etc...

Maybe my change of car will cut my consumption. Actually I would normally be filling up today, but I still have over half a tank left...

Since finishing work I find that my petrol costs have gone down (I was travelling 45 mins each way every day) but the car's use of fuel has gone up. When working it was using 7.8 l per 100km as, after the first 15 mins of constant traffic lights it was pretty much a straight road and I could maintain the same speed. Now, with the little trips to school, shops, drs etc it's up to 10.4 l per 100km. When I realised that I stopped using the car as much as I could .. kids moan about having to get the bus in the heat and the walk from the stop home (esp the last bit - steep hill!) but that really is tough !! Financially, it's way cheaper although I do think their friends' parents think I'm a cheap skate as I make T walk to the foreshore and back if she wants to meet her mates so they sometimes pick her up instead !

I was up to 16 litres per 100k with my last car. Although a trip to the Gold Coast got me 12.3.

I feel quite confident that I will be doing MUCH better with the car I got last week. However, with only a 2.4 engine I do notice the lack of power and acceleration. :(

The Suzuki Alto did tempt me... (between 4 and 6 litres per 100k) :)

I liked this comment, about the Alto, on one website (The Alto's low running costs are its star attraction. Getting behind the wheel is only marginally more expensive than getting a bus pass.)
$11,990 in manual gearbox version, plus about $80 per month in petrol...

wow - something that low would tempt me ! Although it's hard to drive a 'normal' car around here as most people have the off roaders so you can't see anything on the roads as you are so low down !!

I know what you mean. I would be VERY tempted to buy one of these: For Sale, but the fuel cost may be a bit too high...

 there may not be a lack of power with that but I really do think the acceleration would be rubbish ! 0 to 60 in how many days ???
