I am doing some comparisons on the real cost of electricity in both countries, on my main site, and would be interested in knowing what your actual power costs are. If you get the chance, and fancy helping, I would need to know the number of Kw's used in the last quarter, and the total of that electric bill for that quarter (excluding the Ambulance charge if in QLD). Also your location, ie: State or County. Mine for example was 2,957 kwh for $579.45 which equals $0.1731 per unit. |

I got that wrong... mixed up two sets of figures Should be Mine was 2,935 kwh for $579.45 which equals $0.1974 per unit. Same period for 2010 though was 2,957 kwh for $511.89 which equals $0.1731 per unit. An increase of 14%. Pretty much the same power usage though |

ok, bill was for 63 days: RE Renewable energy - 103 units @ 7c per unit = $7.21 CR Net Feed-in Tariff - 103 units @ 40c per unit = $41.20 CR I have no idea about the above - presume it's the energy we generated from the panels 1442 units @ 18.931900c per unit = $273 supply charge = $21.89 plus GST = $29.49 so a total of $275.95 is payable. Hope you can understand that |

Fully understood  I thought, until I did actually fully understand it... :) Initial thinking...
However, your panels would have generated more electricity than the 103 units sold back, but we don't have a number for those. Your actual saving is that $281 per year PLUS the value of the extra power generated at (number of kWhs x 20.825cents). What was your normal kWh consumption before Solar panels installed ? |

For the equivalent time frame last year : 62 days 1482 units @ 16.01c per unit = $237.27 supply charge = $18.22 plus GST I am glad you're looking at this because I have to say I thought we'd be saving more with the solar panels as a number of people I know have much higher rebates |

Hmmm... Your power usage is basically the same as last year. When were the panels installed ? Last Year $237.27 Consumption 1,482 units at 0.1601 (23.9 kWh per day) $ 18.22 Supply Charge $255.49 Cost $ 25.55 GST $281.04 Total This Year $273.00 Consumption 1,442 units at 0.189319 (22.9 kWh per day) $ 21.89 Supply Charge $294.89 Cost $ 29.49 GST $324.38 Total $ 48.41 Less Feed In Rebate 103 units at 0.47 $275.97 Net Your actual power consumption has gone down by 1 unit per day, and you have sold 1.6 units per day. So an efficiency of 2.6 units per day from your system. I assume it is a 1.5kWh system. (8 panels) Most reports expect about 5-6 units per day saved by a 1.5k solar system, you appear to have saved 1, but created another 1.6 via the feed in. So a power production of only 2.6 per day on average, about half of the expected figure. Were those 63 days a lot less sunny than normal ? |

are you kidding ?? We have had so much sun I was expecting a free bill !! This is where I have been querying it as a lot of other people with panels are reporting really low bills. They were finally installed in winter so we have had three bills with a rebate - all of which were minimal We do have 8 panels, two sets of 4, I wonder if only one set is working .... absolutely no idea how to check it out Edited by ohippy, Mar 5 2011, 11:58:09 AM.

I did think that your area had been pretty sunny. Have you asked the installing company to check it out for you, as the savings do seem very low. I've been told that you can see on the inverter panel how much it is generating, but I haven't actually seen one myself yet. I'll know more when I have mine in. The attached chart from Clean Energy shows that you should be getting 6.6kWh, if facing North ? Posted Image Sounds like your panels are facing South, with your "savings" !! im in the process of changing my electric and gas supplier at this house cos my first leccy bill was extortionate!! its an estimate too, but they underestimated :omg: and when we did the reading it was a hell of a lot more!!! 1/11/10-21/1/11; but its broken down into 2 sectoins as there was aprice increase on 3/1/11. 257kw; first 125 @ 14.2p=£17.75 next 132 @ 13.24=£17.48 75k; first 35@ 16.47=£5.76 next40@ 13.23=£5.29 and with 5% VAT £2.31 total= £48.59 we read the meter and it was acutually more like 2250kw we used!!! looking at our old house leccy bill, we were using around 800units over 4 months over winter at aobut a cost of £100. the new house gas bill was an actual reading 4751kwh at a total cost of £220.21 whereas the old house was only about 500kwh per quarter at a cost of approx £50ish. which is wierd really cos we had a gas cooker and ch, but in this house we only have a combi boiler ... yet its 4 x as expensive :dunno: water rates are set at £412.50/year council tax is band A at £968.15/year - apparently thats one of the cheapest in the country  (thank god!!) dont have much change out of my wages at the end of the month  |

You spurred me into looking at what I was paying in the UK compared to now Sue. 2004 UK electric & gas = GBP 680 Last 12 months AU electric = $2628 I know power costs have risen a lot in the UK since 2004 so perhaps the countries are similar costs. 2004 UK council & water = GBP 1454 2011 AU council & water = $2353 There is a big difference here as we are paying no more in 2011 than we were in 2004. I'm sure UK rates have continued to rise and the current x-rate strongly favours the GBP too. |

Now that's very interesting. Weighing up the increases and the changes in our way of living as a family unit I would estimate energy costs to us would be about the same whether in UK or Aus. |

My own survey, on Electricity costs, so far has about a third saying the two countries are about the same, a third saying that UK is more expensive and another third saying that Australia is more expensive. It proves one thing about surveys.... ;) |

I finally got around to ringing the solar company who told me that I should expect to be generating between 4.5 and 4.7 kwh per day (as we only have half the panels facing north and the other half west) and have asked me to read our meter at 6pm for the next three days .. so now that she's told me what I have to look for I'll be able to see what we're generating ! |

well so far we generated 5.30 on Friday and 5.35 today so definitely generating above what we should .. so now I just need to look at the bills a bit closer .. maybe we use more of the electricity as we actually generate it |
