I did a bit of a quote around a while ago and found Thrifty to be the cheapest from Heathrow in July. Now I'm ready to book it and the prices have risen :she: but the product reviews for Thrifty are atrocious. Alamo seems to be a reasonable-ish cost with reasonable-ish reviews .. has anyone used them ? Or would anyone recommend anyone else I don't need to take a mortgage out for ?

I've used Alamo lots, but in the US so probably not a lot of good to you.

Thrifty or sixt used to be the cheapest, or there were "tour operatort" type companies who used to offer deals, the one which springs to mind was The Apple Booking Company, no idea if they still exist. The last couple of hires I had in the Uk were with Easyjet who were way cheaper than anyone else, but only had depots at easyjet hubs, not sure how that works now.

Do you have RAC membership? as that can usually offer you a discount.

Check your Entertainment book to see if it includes international car hire. When I went back, I hired from Avis. Thought it was quite cheap for 5 day hire for 70 pounds. I increased the insurance though so ended up paying 120 pounds for the 5 days.
