Which fridge freezer; If you're not busy Eric ;)

I'm rather highly ticked off that our Samsung SRS595NTD side by side fridge freezer that we bought only 4 years ago is now useless. For a few months now the fridge side of this keeps freezing up behind the back panel and blocking the fan from working. We've had to keep dismantling and manually defrosting the parts weekly and have thrown so much food away because the fridge keeps getting too warm. We've bought spare parts and Terry has fitted them and still the fridge is knackered. I'm cross, it wasn't cheap and I hadn't expected to have to fork out for another one already.

I need advice on which brand to buy now. I don't want anything flash, don't want a water or ice dispenser, just so long as it is self defrost, is the same dimensions as the above ff (to fit into space), energy efficiency is something we definitely take into consideration and is not going to cost me a fortune.

Any help or advice would be gratefully received :)

What is your budget ?

My last Side by Side Freezer was a Haier, a cheap one, but it lasted has lasted us very well, not sure I would get that brand again as it uses more electricity than most, therefore not one for your specifications.

I know lots of people have had trouble with Fisher & Paykel, but we have our Fridge Freezer since we moved here over 6 years ago and its working fine. Had something minor go wrong once and Fisher & Payel sent someone out to fix it quickly and cheaply.

$1500 at the most probably. We saw a Westinghouse before Christmas for $1300 so are just about to go back and see what price they are offering now.

The LG 197 is the most purchased model in your size range at Appliances Online, and they are running a $200 Food Gift Voucher Promotion to 16 Jan 2011. So the cost may effectively be $1,365

The reviews on this model are:
Quote:

Pros: nice looking priced ok
Cons: terriable ice tray freezes vegs in bottom draw
Overall: overall a good fridge looks great and a nice finish plenty of room and easy to keep clean. Shelfs are of good height and depth easy to find food.Fast freeze kids love can of drink cold in 15 mins

Pros: The finish on this fridge is really nice, the handles have a matt finish and the fridge is not overly shiny and the best thing is it does not show finger marks. I decided against the option of ice/water in their other model as it took way too much space from the frezzer. and we have not been disapointed. The frezzer space is excellent.
Cons: Not much we dont like, maybe others would not like the fact the egg box is a seperate plastic box that sits on the shelf and doesnt have seperate holes to hold eggs (instead on the usual in the door moulded version) but this doesnt worry as as we keep eggs on the bench. The ice tray you have to fill only half way in order for the ice to flip easily out, but again that doesnt bother us too much. The tempreature reading on the front i thought would adjust and would read the fridges actual temp, but it just reads the temp you have set it at, so it doesnt seem that useful, I would rather a clock then the fridge temp display.
Overall: Really happy so far with this fridge. I think the finish on it is perfect and leaves no finger marks..very important if you have kids!

The reviews on the Samsung model were not as complimentary.

LG Warranty is: *2 years parts and labour + 3 years on sealed refrigeration system (compressor, evaporator, dryer and tubing) parts only + 5 years on linear compressor (parts only)

GC-B197WFF

Capacity
Total 581 Litres
Refrigerator 353 Litres
Freezer 228 Litres

Energy Rating 2 Stars (New Star Rating) / 3.5 Stars (Old Star Rating)
Energy Consumption 668kWh/year (My Haier is 2.0 Stars (Old Star Rating) and 1240kWh/year Consumption)

Hmm, may be worth looking at that myself, on those figures I will save $120 per year in power bills.

That is the most popular Westinghouse model sold at Appliances Online but at a price of $1,465 + Delivery: $126 To: Wellard, WA

 I think they may not concentrate on WA...

The Westinghouse WSE6100WA gets a user rating of 3.27, so definitely better than the Samsung.

The reviews include:
1: Probably the only minor drawback to this Westinghouse is that it is a bit noisy at times so you don't want it to be too close to bedrooms if you are a light sleeper.
2: Cons: NOISY!!! You can hear it running all the time.
3: The fridge is NOT noisy. It is very quiet.
4: Pros: Very neat looking, very roomy, easy to clean and quiet.
5: Cons: All the vegies in the crisper bins keep being frozen. Have to throw them out. Expensive! After sales service poor.

This comment initially made me ponder on the validity of comments:
Our initial fridge didn't work - Electrolux are the most atrocious company...
Electrolux ?? So I checked, and :

OK, Westinghouse bought from Retravision and due to be delivered on Wednesday (I think). Final price paid $1180, to receive a $200 Coles voucher and got a $20 pedestal 40cm fan thrown in for free. I drive a hard bargain

Thanks for all your input Eric

We had a westinghouse side by side and liked it. When we moved we had to get and upright and have to say that the freezer is way easier and holds as much stuff as the side by sides though. :nosepicker:

I reckon you've made the right choice buying Westinghouse. They last avery long time, with no problems. Wouldn't buy anythingelse. I have a pigeon pair. I've only bought 2 pairs in the last 35 years- the first pair weren't frost free!

Thankyou both for the welcome back. Don't often post, as is obvious, but do lurk to find out how you are all getting along. I'm fine Catgirl, but the last 3 months of 2010 were not so good healthwise - but I won't bore you with the details! You seem to be very happy with your move back. I'm very happy for you. Who knows I might post again if someone else buys a new 'fridge! lol!
