Yesterday I went to buy Zac some school shoes. He needs black formal lace ups. Usually I get him a pair in Kmart or Target or Big W when then are on special and only normally spend about $15 to $20!!! Anyway at his old school, he wore runners mostly and only wore the cheap lace up shoes once or twice a week, and wore them out really quickly. I was buying him new ones every 2 to 3 months, but did not mind as they were so cheap. This year, as he is going to be wearing the formal shoes every day, I thought I would be better off getting his feet properly measured and getting better quality shoes. We went to Betts and Mathers and Williams but all the styles were a bit girly, which was a shame as there was 25% off, so most of the shoes were reduced to about $80 :scared: The Clarks shoes looked nice, but did not seem very good quality, so was unwilling to pay that much money. Then we went to The Athletes Foot, and they measured him as a size 6, and then put his feet on this mat that is linked to a computer screen and scanned his pressure points and it turns out that he has really high arch and all the pressure is on the ball of his foot, which makes sense as this is where he has been wearing out this shoes. He tried on some shoes and said they were really comfy and they looked nice, so I agreed to get them even though they cost $129 :scared: But what really annoyed me is that when he was trying them on, the girl got this insole thingy and put it inside the shoe and never mentioned it cost extra. When I went to pay, it turns out this arch supporting insert was another $50. I said we did not want it, and Zac tried the shoes on again without the support and said they did not feel as comfy, I bought them anyway, but now am worried that his arches are not getting the correct support. Do you think I should go back and buy the inserts?? When he had the shoes on with the inserts, he did the computer thingy again, and this time the pressure was spread evenly from his heel through to his toes, so it must have been working  I am thinking I will take him to a podiatrist and if he needs arch supports get them there, but I reckon they will cost more. Jeez it never ends :she: Edited by Melibeam, Jan 21 2010, 04:44:46 PM.

Mel custom made orthotics cost (at least about 10 years ago) around $300. I bought some Orthoheel ones from the chemist which suit me just fine. That's very naughty of them to "make the sale" on the comfort and fit of the shoe without explaining what they had done. Go in and grumble about deceptive trade practice and mutter "office of fair trading" and see if they'll give you a pair for him. :D Oh and forgot to add though I'm sure it's not necessary that if you got them custom made at great expense and he's still growing.... What annoys me most of all is that the bloody shoes cost $129, you would think at that price they would have arch supports built into them :she: |

Yes... I understand What about getting a pair of el cheapo trainers with arch supports in and carefully removing them and transferring them to the new shoes (might have to trim around the heel or toe to fit etc) |

Most school shoes and runners have normal arch supports, but he needs extra as he has very high arches  The shoes I bought have arch supoprt but its not enough to get him walking correctly (not that his walking looks bad) and stop him wearing down shoes so quickly :she: |

I buy the Grosby shoes for myself for work (as I'm on my feet all day) and the ortho heel supports as well, am gonna try the full insole next. Next time I would buy a cheaper shoe and then buy good arch supports. But I agree the way they got you to buy the supports was very underhand and manipulative. |
