Both girls were back at the orthodontist today for a review. They are both missing the adult teeth that normally come down right next to the centre two teeth at the top so we have to decide what to do from the following options.

1. When T is 16/17 (2/3 years time) have braces fitted to realign the top teeth ($6,000 - $7,000). When she is 18/19 have implants fitted ($10,000). The implants are permanent, for life with no on going costs.

2. Have braces and a frame fitted now. This is more substantial than a brace as it will need to pull all of the back teeth forward to fill the two gaps at the front without pulling the front teeth back at all. This option does require a high level of co operation from the child (who can't be barely bothered to even clean her teeth now) and, I imagine is more painful. However the cost is $$7,000 - $8,000.

We need to make the decision re Tallulah now but have to wait for some x ray results for Nakita as she may need an op even before all the above.

So which option would you pick ?

If T is not bothered now, I would wait until she is older. She will be more mature and able to look after them better, plus you will have time to save some money for the treatment, and she may have a job by then so can pay some of it herself

Option 3. Let her wait until she is earning money and pay for it herself.

Prob go for option 1 and you never know, the braces may actually work well enough for her to not need the implants.

When you say the brace and frame will pull the back teeth forward to fill the spaces - that's all well and good but what happens after the braces are removed. From what Heather's orthodontist has said about a couple of her teeth, the teeth will just shift back afterwards and the money spent will be wasted. :omg: I'd be tempted to go for the first option, gives you time to save what you can and once it's done, it's done.

really ? Orthodontist never mentioned that possibility. What a waste of money if that were the case.

Option 1 includes leaving a gap for the implants Anne so no chance of that. Luckily T is ok with the current state of her teeth (gaps everywhere) so waiting isn't a problem. I think we're leaning towards option 1.

I thought thats why they got a retainer when treatment was finished...so they didn't move?
Leah has a fixed retainer behind her bottom teeth, in there forever if she wants, and a plate for the top teeth, they haven't moved yet!

Yep same with Holly and Shane, permanent retainer behind their bottom teeth, and plastic removable retainer for top teeth, which they are supposed to wear every night

Paul just sits there looking at them saying "I could buy a boat", "that's a nice car" etc etc

I am not one for doing dental work for cosmetic purposes unless necessary and he isn't listening to me (but will!) when he tells me that the dentist will be able to cover the pointed tooth and make it flat as you shouldn't have a pointed tooth directly next to the middle tooth. Well I have and it's never bothered me so it won't bother T !!

So the intention was that 2010 we were going to clear the credit cards and tax debt, 2011 we are going to be hammered as the mortgage doubles and N starts private school and T's fees just rise dramatically every year so 2012 was going to be a breather. Now it doesn't look like that will happen for another 7 years ............... argh !!!
