.. what with our track record and plans to emigrate, but ...

was thinking perhaps sept, as kids will have finished school ... but then they would have to enrol in school when we get to aus - what if we dont like where we are?
if we go november-ish time, will give us time to find nice area/nice school ... and longer to get more money together. plus we have waited this long, whats another couple of months?

I think im tempting fate, but to hell with it ... ive got to get that visa sorted and something planned or i will go crazy!!

thoughts please!!!! :kissed: :flowers:

The school year here starts at the end of January. So if you arrive after September, you have time to change schools if you wish before the full year begins.

However, mine started her first school in QLD in January, but we moved her to a better one after about 10 weeks, and it did her no harm. She was only in grade 2 though.

Arriving in September.October time, you could treat the period till the new year start as a holiday for the kids ? Not sure they would be expected to start school so fast. It is just a thought, but I am pretty sure that I have heard people do that before.

Here in QLD, our school finished on the 3rd December for the summer break, and go back on 27th Jan.

Other States are different, and I can't recall which one you are going to.

With leaving the British schooling system altogether, it makes no difference whatsoever to when to take them out at that end. FWIW I think that if you have kids out of school for too long at this end they get very bored because they don't know anyone yet to play with, don't know where to go and hang out, and they also get very bored following you around while you try to sort all the essentials. Believe me sorting out tax, family credit, medicare, rentals, shopping for furniture, cars etc is not so much fun.

We arrived in March and although we had a few nice weeks weather we were soon into winter. Coming from a very damp and chilly English summer (preceded by a chilly winter and Spring) then going into WA winter it was nearly 18 months since my last decent summer weather until the new summer in Australia, and by gum I did struggle with having crap weather for so long. I actually think arriving here Septermber time ish is a great time, you're coming into the Spring so not jumping slap bang into the heat, the kids will get chance to make some friends at school before the long summer holidays and then they'll be starting the new school year off on a level footing with everyone else and have a good idea of how things work.

I wouldnt worry too much about having to move schools, if we did it with kids I think the best time idea would be get them enrolled in school ASAP - like ABCD says give them time to experience school and see how you all go - a lot of people come around Christmas but then it's school holidays and the kids get bored stupid as they've nothing to do and no friends.

we arrived on 31st August and it was brilliant. The kids had their summer hols in the UK so the departure wasn't so emotional for them. We couldn't get the kids into school until we'd rented a place properly so we all had a few weeks over here as a sort of holiday (although Paul started work straight away :giggle: ) and then I got the girls into school for a couple of weeks before the school hols so they'd made a few friends.
Weather wise was also perfect, end of winter, heading into spring. People must have thought we were mad as the kids were in the pool in September !! Anyway, all round, I wouldn't do it any other time

When ever you go it will be fine. It is often good to give the kids a short time at school to try to make some friends before the long holidays if it is at all possible. It really doesn't matter if you move before the new school year as the routine will still help the kids to settle. The only downside would be the financial side of moving schools with uniforms etc.

Good luck with it all.

My initial question is to get the visa first before you start planning anything. I know people who have been knocked back in getting a visa so all this stress might be for nothing. Once you get the visa then I suggest you get over as quick as possible. My brother came over to validate their visas in November. They got cold feet whilst here so I don't think they will be coming now to live.

I dont think it really matters when you come, but September would be a good time as kids can make friends hopefully before the summer hols.

Have you actually applied for the visa now? Do you have any idea how long it takes these days? When I applied in 2003 for a skilled migration visa as a nurse, I sent the application off on Dec 10 and had visa by March and it was actually dated 08 Feb 2004, it gave us quite a shock as it was so quick. Hopefully nurses visas are still being processed quickly :crossfingers:

Whenever you have the visas and can get reasonably priced tickets. I really don't think it matters in the long run. There are pros and cons depending on all manner of things and after all the time you've spent trying to get here, I'd get the visas and just get on the plane and think about stuff when you arrived. :D

I think thats pretty sensible, in the grand scheme of things considering the way our luck goes.
we always said we would have to save x amount of money to bring (no house to sell), but i think that plan is outa the window - mal has been laid off work again with no sign of work til feb  but im not going to put anything off now ... done that too many times.

Mel - im still battling with getting a reference from nhs p's but with christmas getting in the way i havent chased it up for about 4 weeks now, so will do that on my days off next week. got pretty much all the other evidence we need for the visa, its just the anmc skills assessment i need to get. that includes the ielts test too ...
I have my cardiology appt on 22nd jan - my gp is pretty certain he will not investigate me (my ecg and bloods are normal) and sign me off as fit - she said to tell him why id asked for a referall, with reference to planning to emigrate, and shes certain he will discharge me as not requiring any follow up ... will make sure ive got written confirmation from him for the medical though

Sue can you try and get your nursing registration with the Nurses Board of South Australia (if that is where you are still planning on going), then when you are registered with them you can do the modified assessment of your skills with the ANMC and this works out cheaper

One tip for South Australia Nursing board, they will want a statement of service, this is a list of places you have worked in the last five years, listing all your hours etc. This caused me a nightmare as I had worked casual and agency for most of my time in Australia. I had to register in every state with my current job, but only South Australia wanted this Statement of Service and that was required even though I already worked in Australia and was registered in other states

From the time i spent doing relocation work I'd say that on the whole those who'd come from a uk winter to an aussie winter seemed to struggle more then those who'd come following a summer. Don't really know why but I think in many cases the parents had been constantly telling the kids for months about how they'd come here and spend their time on the beach and have a pool etc....... the reality in a WA winter is quite different and that coupled with the stress of setting up was probably harder than they anticipated.

When we did it we arrived in November, wasn't planned that way it just worked out that way, John was on a weekly contract so we stayed there as long as he was working and only left when I was in the last week to fly due to being pregnant. The boys were 5 and 7 and we kept them out of school until the following feb, they had done 2 months of the school year in England and then had around 12 weeks off before the new school year started. This was the right thing for US to do. When we were looking for areas to live and rentals the kids were with us, we'd look at a house then spend half an hour on the beach or half an hour in the park, then after we'd seen a few sit in macas or the likes so they could be occupied while we discussed things. After the rental was sorted we had the rest of their time off school as family time, exploring Perth and just generally having a ball with our kids while we did everything else we had to, everything didn;t have to be crammed into the first couple of weeks . They didn't miss having made friends before school broke up, infact the time we'd moved before we put the kids into school for the last few weeks of term and it was really hard for them, the kids were midway through all their christmas stuff and my 2 were left out of everything, there was no normal routine and they spent a lot of time lost as they hadn't a clue what was going on, they got on much better starting the new system at the start of the new year after a big break, but thats us and judging by what everyone else has said about getting the kids in school quickly then we are not normal

Maybe the best way to judge is on your situation when the visa arrives, if Mal is working and on good money then maybe hang out for a few extra weeks to give yourself a bit more money behind you, if he's not working the get here asap so you can try the job market here. So long as you do it with the right attitude it shouldn't matter when you come, just that you're finally here!

The girls were off from 17th November to 27th January. It was lovely to be honest, they were involved in starting the new life and by the time school started they were quite keen to get back in, albeit scared stiff!

im going down the full assessment route - nbsa now do their own skills assessment if yo dont have the full anmc one so might as well do that.
also, we arent sure where we are going. was def on for sa - mal has family in adelaide - but we might just go wherever there seems to be plastering work, which this week appears to be melbourne!!!

thanks everyone for your thoughts and experiences, it really does help. I was hoping for a september/october move ... going into summer after a month of uk school after the uk hols ... but will depend on visa and money.

nurses seem to be processed in about 3 or 4 months ... so will take it from the skills assessment.

ho hum, deep breath, here we go :D

I still remember clearly the day I put all the paperwork in the mail for our visa application.

It was such a relief after the nightmare of getting the paperwork ready and all the hard work getting references and getting everything certified etc. I celebrated more that night after I had sent everything off, than I actually did when the visa arrived
