just spent the holidays watching discovery channels and travel channels, and looking at the sites online .. its amazing whats on tv now - we had bbc1, bbc2 and itv as a kid, with david attenborough and alan whicker bringing just a few glimpses of the world out there - now theres not many places that arent known, what with the discovery channel programs, globetrekker, lonely planet etc ... our kids dont know how lucky they are to have access to such a wealth of film and info on far flung lands ... is it just me that finds the whole world a much smaller place now? |

I love the discovery channel and would have loved that as a kid. Consider yourself lucky Sue, I grew up in Ireland and we only had RTE 1 and I think later we got RTE 2, but the picture was always a bit snowy. The only thing I remember watching was Seasame Street, probably all I was allowed to watch I used to read encyclopaedias, whole sets of them. We had one old set that my Dad had from when he was little, and then my Mum bought a more modern set when I was about 8 and I worked my way through most of them (I am not kidding) I remember being about 10 years old and going on the train from Limerick to Dublin to stay with my cousins for a holiday, and taking an encyclopaedia in my bag to read. I must have looked like one sad nerdy kid  |

We still have just a few channels as I won't pay for Foxtel. Never paid for Sky either. |

We have lots of reference books and encyclopaedias in the house ... and oliver is mad keen on bird watching so there are more than half a dozen books on birds alone ... I just find it amazing that there are so many channels out there now that show such amazing programs ... we watched a great one the other night about all the different small tribes around the world, and their initiation ceremonies into adulthood. the kids were astounded ... and it wasnt something id ever read about (I was like mel ... bag full of books) - the tribes they filmed had never been known about until 5 or so years ago - perhaps we wouldnt have known about them if the tv channels didnt commission such indepth research? |

Yes it is great the things on TV now. I do feel kind of sad those tribes are going to be dragged into the 21st century, their culture lost, the kids converted to Maccas and Coke, all the diseases that go with western culture... |
