Labs, labs, labs gotta love em  My Meg was so naughty and didn't grow up until she was about 5, still has her moments every now and then. Her idea of fun was to ruin anything that was special or new to me. Piles of clean washing on the table - she'd eat my brand new bra (did it several time). All my life I'd wanted a rocking chair then I finally got one when we got our conservatory. One day I came home to find she'd been sleeping on it :nono: and while she was there she'd had a chew on the arm, grrrr. She obviously liked it because the next morning we got up and she'd eaten the whole arm off, both rocking bits on the bottom and shredded the cushion!!! My apple tree outside - we'd nurtured it for years after planting it as a sapling, so we were delighted when we finally got fruit starting to grow. It took Meg just 30 minutes to completely lop the tree to nothing more than a stump. She'd eaten the apples then chewed right through the trunk until the tree was no more than 1 foot high. Not to be content with that she repeated the process a few years later when the tree had finally recovered! She did the same with my red acer tree  Even now if we have been away anywhere she's so excited to see us she'll pee herself when we return. As a typical lab she can't help herself but pick something up to greet you with as you come in the door. If you don't remember to take that object from her it will go into her bed with her and get quietly destroyed. Which reminds me of how she thought she was a cat. One night when coming back in from her nightime wee she appeared to have something in her mouth. She looked very sheepish and was adamant she was going to keep her mouth closed, sort of mumbling 'no i hbn't gob anybng imb here'. Closer inspection revealed a tail just poking out through the front of her lips. She'd caught a mouse! And had brought it indoors to play with! Over a few months she did this quite a few more times. Her favourite thing would be to jump up to the counter and grab any food that had been left out to defrost. Many a time I've come home to nothing more than a wrapper on the floor. I'd pick it up and waggle it at her shouting "What's this?!!!!" She'd walk off backwards with her head hanging trying not to look at me, but all the while her tail still wagging because she was pleased I was home. It was always Hollie I felt sorry for. Hollie has always been so top button. Obeys a command immediately, never sets a paw out of place, doesn't know HOW to be naughty. Yet when I came home to trails of destruction it was always Hollie would be first to give the game away. Instead of rushing to the door to meet me she'd be hiding just round the corner with an immensely guilty look on her face. Then once I'd seen what Meg's latest accomplishment was Hollie would hide her head, just her head under the table. That's always amused me. I can just see the scene now. We'd all be out, Meg would be getting up to mischief and Hollie would be sitting there saying "No Meg, you really shouldn't be doing that. Oh please stop, can't you remember getting told off for that before. Oh you've done it now, we are going to be in so much trouble." Now my beautiful babies are getting old. Hollie struggles to get up, she has lumps occuring all over the place, she's really quite deaf and definitely going senile. Meg is oldish but still stoopid, lives for food, cuddles, food, play, food, walk on the beach (though not so keen on the sea - it's a bit scary!), food, hunting, did I mention food. But my goodness she is the most loyal of creatures. As I type, she is by my feet. When I go out she sits by the front window watching for the car. At night she lays outside the bedroom door. I love her love her love her to bits :kissed: |

I hate Jack Russells, vicious little beasts, never met one yet that didn't try to take a chunk out of someone. I know they're ratters but really! It's not the dogs fault, it's the owners but it seems without strong training they revert to basic behaviour very easily. |

Anne, your Hollie and Meg sound just like our two  Daisy is so sooky like Hollie, and I think she too despairs of Mabel and looks all remorseful and hides from us when we are telling Mabel off. We hardly ever need to tell Daisy off these days, she is just such a good well behaved dog now. I am hoping Mabel will mature in the same way, but I know I still have months of her being just shocking :crossfingers: I gave them both a big marrowbone yesterday, and woke up in the night to hear Mabel dragging her bone around on the patio, bashing it on the tiles. I am sure poor Daisy got very little sleep with her. They both sleep outside now in kennels on the patio, as could not have Mabel in the garage as there is too much stuff in there for her to destroy and so had to put Daisy outside too, poor old Daisy, her life certainly not as comfortable since we got Mabel, but definitely more interesting  We had a pretty little Jack Russell as kids and I loved her, but she was very yappy and would snap when she was not happy, she even snapped at my Mother once :scared: She must have been a very brave little dog  She lived to be very old, probably about 18 and was the only one left at home with my parents when all the kids had moved out. They were very upset when she finally passed away, and have never had another dog since  Edited by Melibeam, Jan 4 2010, 12:26:49 PM.

Forgot to mention too, my Mother actually had an oil painting done of that Jack Russell  When we first got her (I must have been about 5 years old), she was a stray and my neighbour asked my Mum to look after her as he had found her wondering on the road. My Mum agreed thinking someone would claim her in a few days and made her cosy in the garage. Well after a few days it got a bit colder so my Mum let her sleep inside next to a radiator. We called her Scrappy as she was just a little scrap of a dog and thought she was a puppy. Anyway she started putting on weight and looking very healthy and one morning a couple of months later my Mum came downstairs to find Scrappy howling in pain and rolling around on the floor. My Mum rushed her straight to the vets where upon being put down on the table to be examined by the vet, gave birth to a puppy, quickly followed by a few more puppies. None of the puppies survived as they were very small and weak, but my Mum was mortified  Anyway shortly after that Scrappy was desexed and lived for another 16 years after this. At this time the vet reckoned she was about 2 years old. |

I took Mabel next door for a play date with their German Shepherd. She was such a bully, and totally dominated Zara, a two year old GS. She had great fun though, play fighting and chasing each other around and empyting her water bowl. She is fast asleep now as came home exhausted  |

Seriously MP, you should try it, much better than taking kids for a playdate, you can leave the dogs run around and fight with each other without having to intervene and pretend you have fantastic parenting skills  |

Its great, myself and neighbour chat over a cup of coffee or glass of wine, another neighbour usually pops in and the dogs and puppies run and play around the garden. Its great for us, the dogs get to socialise with other dogs (which is important for them), and I get to socialise with the neighbours (even the ones I dont like, but at least I get to hear all the street news and gossip  We do this two or three times per week, myself and Mabel get to be sociable and Daisy gets a rest  Edited by Melibeam, Jan 7 2010, 11:08:11 AM.

I haven't been reading this thread for a while, but decide to scan through it today, and stopped suddenly at this one...... I am not sure what day it was, about 4 days ago, so highly feasible the same day as yours... We had a knock at the front door, and the neighbour from across the road was there, with a dog following him, that looked just like ours, he said it was, I said it can't be, ours is in the kitchen. But it did look and act identical. It was ours of course, Ellie (the dog), must have followed my wife out the front door when she put something outside, didn't see the dog follow and go outside, and then closed the door, with the dog obviously outside. Sounds very similar to you. |
