Mabel is now 5 months old and she is very very cute, but OMG she is the naughiest lab ever. She is a hundred times worse than Daisy was as a puppy. She has dug up our back garden until there is not a plant or a blade of grass left, its like a mud bath after all the rain, and she revels rolling around it it, not a good look for a very pale yellow lab  She is totally disobedient, never responds to her name (unless there is a food involved). She has dug her way under the side gate so many times now, she even gets through the reinforced wire that we have dug into the ground. She escapes and runs like the wind out of the garden, up the road and anywhere she fancies. She is gone before we can even think to shout and leg it after her. She has been lucky she has not been hit by a car, and has been apprehended by neighbours on quite a few occasions. She also digs her way under the pool fence, and many a morning I have woken up to splashing noises in the pool, only to look out the window and spot Mabel doing laps around the pool, am not kidding, it looks like she has a big smile on her face. She steals food whenever she gets a chance, dog food, cat food, human food, she is not fussy. Zac and his friend left some chips on the patio table, and I spotted her out the window sitting on the table scoffing down their hot chips and tomato sauce!!!! I banged on the window and shouted at her to get down, but she looked at me, wagged her tail and carried on eating the chips and the paper they were in!!!! We tell her off sternly but she could not care less. In fact when we tell her off, Daisy puts her head down and looks shamed, but Mabel just looks at us wagging her tail. She tries to kill the cats every chance she gets and I have had to rescue a soggy moggy from her many times. I shout at her to drop things, but she thinks its a game and runs off with them, expecting me to chase after her. She has eaten numerous thongs, shoes, handbags, clothes she pulls of the line etc. When Daisy goes off in the evening for her long walk, Mabel howls after her, so now we have to take her indoors and distract her until Daisy comes home again. Mabel has a short walk every morning, but is shocking on a lead, and has eaten her way through three leads already, she is now on a chain lead but stops walking to sit down and have a chew and a growl at it. I cant possibly take her anywhere, she is too badly behaved. She is terrible in the car too, and will jump from the back on top of the driver, unless she is restrained, and then when she cant move, she barks and howls terribly. She so reminds me of Marley, and thats a scary thought. I have kids who dont obey me, I cant have a puppy too. This new year she is being enrolled in obedience classes. I simply love reading the Mabel threads on here and TBH whenever I hope in for a squizz round they are the ones I am keeping a special eye out for. This one really tickled me and I could see myself nodding at places where it reminded me of my youngest cat (just turned a year old last week) She is such a scamp. Think trails of shredded toilet paper. I hope the obedience classes work and that she grows out of the naughtiness in time Mel. Have you though of running some wire around the garden and putting a not too long running chain looped through it attached to a full harness that she could wear? That way she could run freely around the garden but not have too much leeway to run across/out. Do you get what I'm trying to say? The running away is a real worry you would be heartbroken if she were hit by a car. More likely she would cause a collision as one car swerved to avoid her and she would carry on running totally oblivious, with a big soppy grin on her face and her tongue lolling out. :P |

Glad you are enjoying tales of Mabel TC. She is simply shocking. She too loves toilet paper, and steals the roll off the holder in the downstairs toilet every chance she gets. We do tie her up at night as dont want her to escape then, but leave her off during the day when we are around to watch her. The fencing has again been reinforced today, but she is so good at digging it wont last long. Now when I see her with muddy paws and legs, I have to go outside and check where she is digging, fill it in, tell her off and give her a bone to distract her  Todays special was to chew one of the cushions on the patio chairs, she actually pulled it off, dragged it to her bed and sat there chewing it to bits. I go to the op shops and buy her old cushions, blankets, towels, teddies etc for her to chew, but she prefers good stuff  She had a hydro bath two days ago, and the water was filthy afterwards, and she looked a completely different colour lab when she was clean, mind you it only lasted about 10 mins as she went and rolled around in the dirt straight after. I am sure she will grow out of it by about 18 months. Daisy was a naughty puppy too but at least she looked remorseful when told off, thats the difference with Mabel. She honestly does not care or give a second thought to any discipline or telling off. It is quite funny but gets a bit annoying when she is constantly destroying the garden and personal items. I think she will love the obedience classes, as she loves socialising with other dogs, but all the dogs near us are a bit scared of her as she bounds up to them and jumps all over them  |

It certainly made me laugh - and by comparison my 2 behave like angels! In terms of the walking - a couple of ideas. Firstly - try these harnesses. http://www.google.com.au/search?q=easy+walker+harness&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&client=firefox-a&rlz=1R1DVFC_en-GB___AU356 We also recently had a guy out from Sit Drop Stay (http://www.sitdropstay.com.au/). Not cheap but 'cured' a couple of problems (almost). To walk properly - we now have a couple of canvas slip collars - and by putting them up high on the head just behind the ears the control is instant. We'd always had them down low on the neck which doesn't really work. The whole concept was to teach them who is pack leader (ie you) and when going out for a walk they are meant to follow you - so don't tell them anything just put the lead on and walk out. Good luck! |

We do use a head collar when walking her, but she just lies down and tries to get it off with her paws, so apart from dragging her along, its impossible to get her to walk. With a normal collar and lead she pulls her head out of the collar and takes off. The head collar (think its called a haltie) works as she cant get it off, but the only way to make her get up and move is to offer her a food treat, but then as soon as she finishes eating, she lies down again and tries to fight the head collar off, its comical and amazing to think she graduated from puppy school  The other issue is chasing her around the garden once she spots me coming with the collar and trying to hold on to her to get it on. It would make good viewing on Australias Funniest Home Videos  I know she will get better, as she will do anything when offered a treat, but cannot constantly feed her bits of dried liver, as also have to clean up the poo all over the garden every day too :yuck: Edited by Melibeam, Jan 1 2010, 08:38:44 PM.

 sorry, reminds me a bit of my Beagle. He'd love Mabel !! He has a harness and when he lies down on walks I lift him up and air walk him !!! When we're on the beach I just drag him. I'm constantly being laughed at by anyone who passes ! Only problem is that he's not a small dog !! However, Mabel is worse and, I know this doesn't help you, but it does make me feel better !! Mutley is nearly three, hope he grows out of his issues soon. |

She likes cats, especially chasing them, our two cats have had more exercise in their lives since we got Mabel, because they run away the minute they spot her. I dont think they ever ran in their lives before she started being interested in them. They are very good at jumping up high and getting out of her way, but Casper, bless him is not such a good jumper, and sometimes Mabel does manage to get him between her paws and slobber all over him. She has been hissed at and scratched by both cats, but it does not stop her. Daisy on the other hand is terrified of the cats and will never go anywhere near them  Ohippy, I have done the air walking thing too by pulling her up with the harness, but she is getting heavier by the day so its getting harder and my arms are getting stronger and I now see muscles I never used to have :scared: I have just looked outside and there is bits of paper all over the patio, she got hold of some kitchen paper on a roll that Jason left outside on the table earlier. Also I gave both dogs their worm and flea treatments tonight, and Daisy dropped her tablet out of her mouth, so Mabel grabbed it and swallowed it before I could do anything. So now she has had a much bigger dose than she should have and I had to give Daisy another one, and they are bloody expensive  Mabel loves Beagles (there are two at the top of our road), actually she loves all dogs and humans, maybe just a little bit too much  |

Oh this is lovely I'm really enjoying this. She does sound like Marley. I've not seen the film but I did read most of the book (an hour in a bookshop reading chunks of it and sobbing quietly - hope no-one saw). Beagles are full of themselves too aren't they? I just love their enthusiastic little faces. A real lesson in taking life in both paws and loving it to death! But very sturdy little dogs, labs too, you must both be strong women! Yes any bit of kitchen roll I've used and left on the side is retrieved and sucked and chewed to obtain every last bit of food juice  then the bits trailed all over the kitchen floor. She is supposed to be a dainty, dignified little woman with the name of Coco Chanel, but it isn't so  little tomboy. |

I know sod all about dogs and to be honest if I had a dog like that I'd have got rid of her but then I'm not a dog lover :nono: Anyway surely by giving her a bone to distract her would put in her mind that she's getting a bone as a 'pat on the back' for digging up the garden? Probably thinks you're pleased with what she's doing. |

Your Mabel sounds just like my springer Benji, he too is very naughty and wags his tail when being told off. Ive been chuckling away at hearing her antics. If it makes you feel better, Benji does most of those things apart from digging, he too hates his lead and has chewed through his as well. We had a muzzel on him to stop him chewing stuff but it didn't work When we go out we have to leave all our doors closed as he would sniff out the slightest hint of food. Before christmas he ate a whole box of flake chocolates that my son had bought for a freind. He then found a bag of dairy free chocolate that i had been saving up for my youngest to make him a selection pack which i had hidden in my wardrobe. Mandy |

There is no cure for this ailment, unfortunately. When I was very young, just a kid at school, we had a black cocker spaniel. Blackie ( I know, not very p.c. you wouldn't get away with it now but I was only 6 when I named him) He loved his food, he was all ears and slobber over his dinner. One Christmas, Mum made all the sausage rolls and left them to cool and went to bed. Big mistake - next morning Mum came down and found all the sausage rolls eaten or half eaten on the floor. She told him off and he looked appropriately guilty and cowered. Mum baked a whole new batch. When she went to bed, she shut them in a room to cool and left a half dozen out just for Blackie. Laced with pepper and cayenne and anything else she thought might cure him. didn't work. He ate the jolly lot and was licking his lips and wagging his tail next morning. |

I am glad its not just me with a naughty dog. I could never get rid of her, I am sure she will improve as she gets older. She is a challenge for me, and I intend to make her obedient and well behaved, no matter how long it takes  Plus she is great as a personal trainer, and gets me out and exercising  As for giving her a bone as a reward, it probably is like giving her a pat on the back, but I tell her off sternly first, and dont give her the bone straight away, its only when I see her heading back to start digging again, but if I dont give her that to chew, she will continue to dig, so having a bone is preferrable. I dont think of it as rewarding her, more like distracting her  No matter how annoyed with her I get, she melts my heart when I see her and Daisy cuddled up together. |

Thats funny TC  It has reminded me that Daisy was sometimes naughty as a puppy too, I remember her eating some chilli plants we had growing in the garden, she came inside and was panting and foaming around the mouth, she drank a big bowl of water, then went back outside and finished off the rest of the chilli plants  Edited by Melibeam, Jan 2 2010, 09:06:17 PM.

OH MY GOD!!!!! you are SOOOOOOOOOOOOO selling me the thousands of reasons i keep coming up with to NOT get a dog!!!! my kids keep mithering me ... and i keep saying, 'once we are settled in australia i will think about it' .... NOOOOOOOOO!!!! TC, we had 2 cats for most of my life - i got one when i was 7 and she lived to me being about 30 ... we kept one of her kittens who died when i was about 29. I remember my mum stuffing the xmas turkey and getting it ready to go in the oven at about 4am ... anyway she coudlnt fit it in the fridge so left it on the draining board ... when she got up to put it in we heard this loud scream - Charlie had dragged it round the kitchen, chewing as she went, and left bits of meat all over the place ... as well as piles of sick!!! my mother nearly strangled her!! cats  |

Its only because she is a puppy, and labs are notorious for being naughty  Once they grow up a bit, they are fantastic family dogs, great with kids, great to get you out and exercising. Daisy would sleep most of the day if Mabel was not around to annoy her  Mabel is inside now, fast asleep beside Daisy and looks like butter would not melt, but she spend the day out in rain rolling around in whatever mud and dirt she could  |

OMG just got such a fright!!!! I was watching tv with the dogs asleep on the floor near my feet. Did not notice Mabel get up to move at any stage. Just heard a knock on the front door and there is Mabel with one of the neighbours  We had no idea she was outside, or how she got out the front, can only think Shane let her out as he went out a while ago and maybe she sneaked out the door behind him. Why she has such a desire to escape from here is beyond me, she has food, comfort, love etc but still she runs off every chance she gets  Earlier when there was a huge storm, herself and Daisy say outside chewing on the bones I had given them, and seemed oblivious to all the thunder clapping around them  |

OK....... our Fred is a digger, he will dig his way next door any chance he gets, the only way we've managed to stop him is by putting him on a fairly short rope (around 3 metres) and tying the other end to a tyre, that way he can get anywhere in the yard he wants but has to pull his tyre with him which he does easily, but he can't get it through a hole he's dug so can't escape, he now doesn't even try, but we still use his tyre whenever he's outside. Taz on the other hand doesn't move much these days unless its for food, he's never been one to escape but he's always been a typical lab when food is about. When we lived in England he was on a strict diet to lose weight to come here, he'd been living with my parents for a few months and they were killing him with kindness, he was ok with the diet food but one day I'd come in from Tesco as the phone was ringing, I chucked the bags dwon in the kitchen and answered the phone, chatted for 5 mins then realised I had to get the bioys from school, ran out the door, back in ten mins to find Taz looking very sheepish, I couldn't find any reason for it......... until...... I went into the laundry and found the wrappers for...... 1 kilo of mince, 1 tescos finest chicken and veg pie, 1 quiche, 1 french stick, 1 packet of chicken and muchroom ravioli and 6 tescis finest hot cross buns................ bloody dog wasn't fed for ages after that! |
