A blue moon is the second full moon in one calendar month, there is normally only one full moon.

Hence the old saying; "once in a blue moon", to describe a rare event.

My daughter asked me last night to find out why the blue moon wasn't actually blue... So I just did.

About 40 blue moons per 100 years.

Yep, ABCD is right, just means two full moons in one month, not that it's actually blue. I went out to look at it anyway, just so I could say I'd seen one!! :blushing:

In 1883, the Indonesian volcano, Krakatoa exploded. Plumes of ash rose to the top of our atmosphere, and the moon turned blue.

It happens like that on rare occasions.

In 1983 after the eruption of the El Chichon volcano in Mexico, the same blue moon appeared.

These things happen, once in a blue moon....

And these volcano eruptions coincided with a 2nd full moon in the calendar month - or no? Not related to that?
