Jason has now been out of work for 5 months and I am beginning to panic that he will never get another job. He has done so many costly courses eg forklift driver, HR truck licence, EWP licence, traffic controller licence and a certificate 3 in Telecommuications. He also has a moterbike licence. He applies for jobs constantly, even places like Bunnings etc, but nothing, he never even hears back from them. He has signed up for three agencies who tell him there is loads of work available, but then he never gets any calls from them  I just dont know what else to do, we have no savings, and can barely survive on what I earn. Centrelink are no help as say I earn over the threshold for any help from them. He has plenty of work experience in Australia, he has a degree in Business Studies and worked as a buyer and property manager in London. When we first moved to Melbourne it took a few months for him to get a job, but he got one as a property manager, left after a year as hated it and worked as a postie for Australia Post. When we moved to Brisbane he got a job straight away with Elgas, then he moved on to Caltex Oil Refinery where he worked for a year on a contract as a trades assistant. He has heaps of experience working with electricians with cabling etc. He has had his resume professionally looked at and updated. I am almost at the stage of giving up, everyone says Australia has not suffered as badly in the recession as the UK, Ireland etc, but everyone I know in those countries is working. In fact everyone I know, apart from Jason, is working!!!! I just dont know what else he can do, how long can someone keep applying for jobs without any response??/ Sorry for the moan, but I really am beginning to think he will never get another job  |

You have my sympathies, not sure what to suggest as he's obviously covered all bases. Has he actually gone round places in person and offered them a copy of his Resume? That might get him in a door. May be worth going back to Aus Post and asking, might take him for over christmas and then keep him on, especially as he already has experience there. |

Thanks MP, he has been around lots of places and dropped his resume off. Aus Post only take people on part time now or on contract basis (where you have to have your own van) and the pay is crap, he has looked at this but to be honest its not worth it, as the hours and pay are so bad and he would be out in the sun and heat delivering mail which he does not want to do in a Queensland summer  |

Are there any schemes like the one Matt runs over there? (I'm thinking aloud, I'll ask Matt when he gets in) Matt has found two people work who have been unemployed for a long time this week, one guy was in his 50's. The main problem (MAtt says) is the resumes are too long and to unspecific and the cover letter etc all needed totally revamping. He has got others interviews too. I don't know anyone out of work here...fingers crossed Mel :flowers: |

He'll probably need to keep going back to the same places and keep badgering them, if they haven't considered him bEfore chances are they have chucked his resume. But if he can't get a job he'll have to create one, mowing lawns, cleaning pools, window cleaning anything that brings in extra and makes contact with people. As for the aus post situation, as you aren't getting any centrelink help then he's not going to lose anything by taking a job with them and he'd be bringing in some much needed money. Is he as desperate to find a job as you are for him to find one? |

Same as Lynn .know that here there is a real call for cleaners ,a friend just started a cleaning business ,she went to the real estate agencies & offered her services to do house cleans when tennants leave etc $500 per house & her quote was one of the cheapest so she gets the jobs. Not exactly what you dream of doing but when you have kids to support you just get on with it. & What Hev's says ,not exactly cool when im out making my Avon deliveries but at least im doing something & not sitting on my bum moaning that nobody wants to employ a middleaged woman honestly he needs to get real :flowers: |

Have to laugh at the cleaning idea, he would be so crap at cleaning  Believe me I have tried to teach him. I know I have made him sound lazy, but seriously Aus Post are so bad to work for, from his previous experience, and I really dont blame him for not wanting to back there. He did actually apply but has heard nothing back from them either, which is strange as you would think they would want a previous employee back who knew the job  I think the fact that is coming up to Christmas is making things harder, most companies are cutting back and wont be hiring again until January, or so he keeps being told. |

There is good money doing Party Plans, I know someone who has just started doing the 'Undercover Wear' ones and she earns good money, but I don't suppose he would fancy holding group parties for women trying on underwear etc... or would he  |

Mel his resume should be altered for every job that he applies for. Make sure the work experience or qualifications is under a heading stating RELEVANT experience or qualifications. The reason why I'm saying this is that with all of his experience he will look over qualified for many jobs and employers may not look at him and think taht he will stay in the job for too long or just use it as a stop gap job until something better comes along ....which I know sounds crazy as well all look for a better job when working somewhere. If you look at it this way, he applies for a job as a truck driver, yet he states he has a degree in business studies etc etc they will think what the hell does he want to be a truck driver for??? Most trucking companies work on the basis of walk in and ask for a job without submitting a resume, just get him to go and ask them in their offices and get him to take along his licences including the fork lift one and I'm sure he would be able to get a job as a haulage driver. I also think this can be a case for a lot of companies as the face to face approach can't be beaten at times...you go in and be friendly make small talk and your name is in their mind instantly when the short listing comes in. He needs to do a bit of leg work as well as sending out applications. Also isn't he linked up to a job tech lot through Centrelink? and what are they doing to help him get a job? Get him to be pushy with them as well. I do hope he has a break for all your sake xx |

Thanks Sasha, he has been changing his resume to suit applications  Walking into places is good, will get him to to start again with that, although all he kept been told was that they were not hiring before Christmas and to try again in January. Centrelink are useless, he has been for two interviews with them to be told that he is not entitled to anything, he also got sent for an interview with their job search dept and all they did was take his details, he has not heard anything else from them. He went back to Centrelink yesterday and got the usual runaround. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I dont know what we will do if he does not get a job soon  Edited by Melibeam, Nov 27 2009, 07:54:17 AM.

On the Centrelink and Job search facilities, they are only set up to help people who are eligible to claim benefits. Although people not eligible for benefit can register, the job search agency does not get paid anything for helping those people. Therefore they put their effort into helping those that they do get paid for. This is an area that should not have been privatised... Unfortunately, not everyone that works in the system is actually aware of this limitation. Hence, they start to try something then find they can't... |

In my current role I run a two week course for the unemployed. We do the following structure 1) The hidden job market (Figures estimate that upto 75% (Yes really) of jobs are not advertised. The way to tap into this market is networking and cold calling. Networking is the process of who you know, who they know, who they know etc etc. There is lots of information, on the internet, on how to effectively network. 2) Cold calling. How to run a cold calling campaign. Again there is loads of information on the Internet on how to do it. 3) Resume construction. I would say that 99% of the resume's I have seen needed to be altered in some way. 4) Cover letter construction. If you need anymore help or pointers then send me an email |

He can register on www.jobsearch.gov.au because he should have a Job seeker ID. When he uses this he can set up search profiles for jobs. Also he should register on Seek. You can set up search profiles for different types of jobs and he will get regular emails with jobs that match his search criteria (Make sure all spellings are correct though) www.jobsearch.com.au (not gov) searches across several of the major sites. www,careerone.com allows you to search by postcode location The top tips I would give for a resume are 1) Presentation is critical. When a resume is being looked at you have a 30 second window to move to the next stage. When looking at a high volume of resumes consultants will initially scan the resume and check that the presentation is good and uniform. If its ok it will go onto the pile to look at further. If not then that's it. 2) If you put a career objective in your resume make sure that it is moulded to the job that he is applying for. 3) If you have a skills and abilities section make sure they are relevant to the job that he is applying for. 4) Against each job he should have a section of duties and they should be simple bullet point statements that convey the meaning of what was done. Do not write in paragraphs because they will not be read. 5) Use simple fonts (Ariel or Times Roman) 6) Employers do not like to see gaps in work history. They would rather see a period of unemployment explained. A gap in the resume may get the person reading your resume to start forming negative judgments about you; “It looks like this person has something to hide.” “Here’s someone who must have some problems.” There are several ways of addressing gaps in your resume 1) Use only years, not months when referring to periods of employment. Look at the example below 12/05 – 03/09 Kitchen hand 02/02 – 01/04 Waitress Without the months there is no apparent gap; 05 – 09 Kitchen hand 02 – 04 Waitress 2) If your period of unemployment covers more than two years you need to provide some explanation to the void. Think of what you were doing during that time and present them in a manner as close to your career objective as possible Examples Someone looking for work in a medical or caring profession who took time off to care for an aging relative; 2006 – 2008 Home Care Provider for aging parent A mother re-entering the work force wanting to be a teachers aide might put 1997 – 2008 Full time parent and PTA volunteer. 3) If your gap has no relevance to your desired career then explain the gaps honestly and with dignity. Avoid references to illness, rehabilitation and unemployment (Even if it was for clearly explainable reasons such as a recession.) Speak about what else you did in that period even if it does not relate to your career path choice. Suggested titles may be; • Full Time Parent • Home Management • Family Management • Independent Study • Personal Travel If you use unpaid experience in your work history be sure that you entitle the section with something like “Work History” or “History” as opposed to “Employment History” or “Professional History” as both of these terms infer you were paid. |

I have passed Matts post on to Jason, and he actually has been doing a lot of what he has suggested - thanks Matt :flowers: Jason is registered on the Aus Post website so its strange that he did not get an email about the above position.
