Holly is driving me mad with piercings. She already has about three in her ears, and has to rotate them and wear invisible earrings etc for school. She also has her tummy button pierced, which looks nice and I am not bothered about that. For a while she has been telling me she is getting her tongue pierced in the holidays :yuck: I really dont want her to, but no matter what horror stories I tell her about it, she is adamant she is getting it done next weekend. I know there is nothing I can do really, she knows I am not happy about it, but as she is 16 and has her own money, I cant stop her, but I have told her I am having nothing to do with it, and if it gets infected etc she can sort it all out herself. I feel like MP did when her daughter wanted her piercings, its just so frustrating. I guess at least with her tongue it wont be too noticeable and will heal quickly if she ever takes it out  |

Oh god Mel, my sympathies :( At least with Abs being 14 I had some control but heaven knows what will happen when she turns 16  I think tongue piercings are feral and dangerous but what can you do? At least you won't have to feed her for a week or so :hide: Have one of these

Well I have come down very heavy handed on her this afternoon, and got Jason to talk to her too. He told her how disappointed in her he would be if she got it done, and went on about the dangers etc. She just argued back, telling him he is old fashioned and she is doing it now matter what. I have emailed her links and pictures etc, as she wont look at them if I try and call her to the computer :headbang: I have also told her that she might be 16 and legally allowed to do it, but while she lives in out house she has to follow our rules and our rule is that she is not allowed that piercing. She went mad saying she is still getting it, so I told her she is not welcome to live here anymore if she does not follow our rules  Of course I dont mean it and she knows it :headbang: Jeez my teenagers were definitely put here to try my patience  Edited by Melibeam, Nov 23 2009, 05:09:58 PM.

What's the school rule? At our place it is classed as facial piercing and not allowed so would lead to a suspension if not removed. Just a thought. Nicky |

School rules say no piercings for boys, and girls can only have one ear piercing in their ear lobes, and must wear a gold or silver stud only, no other earrings allowed. But Miss clever clogs Holly wears invisible earrings in her other piercings, and has gotten away with it by hiding them with her hair. She reckons by the time she returns to school at the end of January, the tongue piercing will be completely healed and wont be noticed, but she tells me she is planning to wear an invisible bar in it :headbang: I have threatend her with telling her employers at the fish and chip shop and the british shop where she works that she is getting it done, as I dont think they will be too impressed with her either  I am so frustrated with her, she has an argument and answer for everything :she: Edited by Melibeam, Nov 23 2009, 10:16:23 PM.

Mel, I know how you feel but dont fight her - if she insists on getting it done, tell her to make sure she brushes her teeth properly and uses an anti-bacterial mouthwash prior to getting it done ... and remind her about this = www.danaid.com Dan was mals ex-sis in laws lad who died after getting a lip piercing done ... although he had congenital heart problems, it could happen to anyone. |

Thanks Sue, I am worried about the health risks, as I have a heart problem and always need anti biotics before any dental work, piercings or operations etc. I was only diagnosed with with mitral valve stenosis when I was 19, although I often had symptoms as a child that my Mum noticed but was never picked up by doctors then. I also have Factor V blood clotting disorder and Holly has been tested for this but no results yet. I have asked her to wait until we get results but she wont listen. These are both hereditary conditions and even though she has no signs of having them, I do worry. The trouble is teenagers think they are infallible etc and even though I dont want to fight her, as know it will make her more determined, I just cant help myself  Edited by Melibeam, Nov 24 2009, 05:38:00 AM.

you could always try the reverse psychology tack - say you will let her get it done if she goes to the doctors and gets checked out. call her bluff and tell her that if she wants to be the adult then she has to do the adult thing and get the all clear, as only a child would ignore potentially fatal effects and do nothing about them. I guess i have all this to come :( |

Agreed. She can't really argue with that. She wants to be treated as an adult, she does have to prove she can act the part even if it's only to shut you up. At least you will have a bit of reassurance about the health side of it. |

My daughter had them all up both ears in her late teens, now she has let some of them heal over. She wanted to get a nose one at one stage and I told her that noses were ugly so why would you want to draw attention to it by putting a ring or stone on it. It worked she left the nose alone. Her friend had her tongue done horrible. I am not a fan of tattoos either as when we age they look pretty awful in my opinion as the skin wrinkles. :D |

Have a word with her bosses at the shops and ask them to say, if she asks, that they can't employ anyone with piercings on the face, including the tongue as customers would not appreciate it. Then suggest to Holly that she check with work to see if they have any rules regarding piercings  |

Already tried the work one as am friends with the owners, and as long as it heals properly, they are not too bothered what she gets done  Tried the doctors too, took her sort of hoping they would find she had a heart murmur or something but nothing, she is fine and also got her blood test results back and she has not inherited my clotting disorder which is good news for her  The doctor actually said to her it was a passing phase, and that Holly would probably take it out in a year or two, and whilst there were risks etc, as long as she is careful with her oral hygiene and sucks ice cubes after it, she should be fine. I have given up arguing with her, I have told her its her body and if she wants to ruin it then fine :she: |

She had the tongue piercing done this afternoon, sneaky little git!!! I picked her up from work at 2.30pm and she asked to be dropped at the station as said she was meeting a friend and going shopping. She was a bit vague about where she was going, just mentioned that they were going to the city. I asked her why and she said to do some shopping and I said I hope you are not getting your tongue pierced and actually offered her $100 not to do it. Anyway she arrived home a while ago with it done :she: I think it looks absolutely feral, but she is delighted with herself and is sucking ice cubes and telling me it does not hurt one bit  I am actually upset that she could go and do this when she knows how much I hate it  |

I am refusing to look at it :she: She cant eat anything, just suck on icy poles and she has just informed me that if work call her I am to tell them she is down on the Gold Coast with friends for a few days  So its getting worse she has lied to work too, as wants to give herself a few days to recover. I am horrified that she could turn out like this. Anyone that knows her is really shocked too as its not at all like her, and is such a surprising thing for her to do. She is usually quiet and sensible. Jason reckons she is rebelling against being seen as the sensible girl, and even though he hates piercings, he reckons it could be worse and at least its not obviously visible. I know its not the end of the world but I am still so shocked at her, and especially the lying to work business  I have had a chat with her about it and it her mind its not really lying as she might go down to Coolangatta tomorrow with a friend :brickwall: Edited by Melibeam, Dec 6 2009, 09:50:47 AM.

Sorry but I wouldnt lie for her, tough tits if she loses her job because she's lied. As for the piercing, if I were in your shoes I'd tell her you're not interested in hearing anything about it or seeing it, she is obviously clear how upset and disapointed you are, best to try and move on and stop giving her the attention she obviously wants over it all. I just hope Katie never wants to get anything like that done...... hopefully she'll be a woos like me!!! :crossfingers: |

I have to work out my plan of action for any possibility of this happening with mine.... If she says she want's one, I think I will say yes, but to save money I will do it for her.... now, where did I put the electric hammer drill... If she says she will get one anyway, I will promise to do a second one for her, just to show that I can do them just as well as the place she would go to. |

The thing with Holly is that she has no fear, and had I offered to do it for her, she would just have laughed it off. She was clever enough to have dropped the subject for a few week or so, then just casually mentioned she was going shopping and got it done. She had made her mind up to do it and nothing or no one, even trying to bribe her with money was not going to work as she has plenty of her own money, she was not going to change her mind. She actually said to me that she knows I think its horrible and she was going against the wishes of both her parents, but she wanted it so badly she did not care and just went and had it done, prepared to take the consequences afterwards. She really has no fear of anything. When she was younger we thought it was funny that she was so brave, she would always be the first to go on any scary rides at theme parks, the first to dive head first off a boat, diving board etc. She faces any situation without any hesitation or nervousness. Its actually very weird as most people feel scared about some things, but not Holly. Anyway I am just ignoring it now, whats done is done, and as for her job, she is casual, so does not have to work regular shifts, and if they phone for her I have no intention of lying for her and she knows that  |
