How doo you clean yours.

We replaced our old one cos it was so yukky and rusty. We have use the new one 4 times but its already feral...anyone have any great ideas that don't contain too many chemiclas that we will then eat?

I have given up with barbecues, I used to scrub ours after every use and it put me off using it.

I asked some aussies and they laughed and said they never clean them, just light it and let it burn off all the crap. Anyway not so sure about that, so now I get Jason to wipe everything down with hot soapy water, then brush everything, we have one of those steel bbq brushes from Barbecues Galore, then before next use, give it another brush, light it up for about 10 mins before putting any food on.

I still think bbq's are disgusting, and if there is a better way to clean them I would love to know.

Terry does pretty much what it says on that website ABCD though not every time after we've used it. He even rinses it all down with the hose. BTW our barbie is the same as the one pictured in the website. Cost us a fair amount when we first arrived but I think it's been a good investment as, apart from a door getting broken by a ball, it's as good as new whereas my sister is on her 3rd cheap barbie since we arrived.

Thanks guys but I neede to be more specific :blushing: I have a BRILLIANT thing for cleaning the grill/ slot side of the bbq, its like a giant pumice stone, rub over lightly and I swear the stuff just falls off. However its the plate thing where the chicken wings etc go, its half an inch thick with cak already. BUT it states on the bbq itself not to use metal implements as it takes off the surface (and I guess that leads to rust like the old one? ) Humpphhh

Have a friend who has those squares that you put in the oven to stop stuff falling to the bottom (not having a good day on the explaining front)
she puts them on the hotplate of the barbie & just puts it in the sink after to wash keeping her hotplate shiny & clean.
I just leave it to the OH he always gives it another clean in beer just prior to using it.

can you not use bog standard oven cleaner on the hot plate? is it removable so it can be soaked in hot soapy water. I'm not much help my BBQ has been used twice LOL

Think it is ,if a silicon sheet is what you put in the oven to catch fat at the bottom :yes: :dunno: :yes:

we had one of those metal drum type ones once and it was dead easy to keep clean; foil under the coals so it was just a case of flinging the foil and cold coals in the bin, any gunk that dripped was just caught on the foil. then we used to do what it said on that site and season the rack with oil - if your rack is already covered in cack then put it into the sink/bath with very got water and a very generous glug of washing up liquid. leave it for an hour and give it a poke with a plastic windscreen scraper (can you get those in aus? if ya cant i'll send you one). if it doesnt lift off easily, repeat the hot water and detergent soak ... once you have got it clean, rub some oil on the rack and warm it gently. then you will just have to wipe it clean after use (and re-season it)

When I am in a cleaning frenzy (happens less and less these days) I soak my oven trays in cloudy ammonia (which you can buy in the supermarket) in the laundry sink (apparently napisan works a treat too) and it brings them up shiny as new, would probably work with BBQ plates or grills too :yes:

I clean mine with a brush and washing up liquid, steel wool. However not the cooking plates just a rinse down as if they get too good a clean the food sticks next time I cook.

You have just reminded me mine needs a clean now.

BBQ plates and grills can be cast iron or stainless steel.

I think cast iron would rust too much if cleaned too often ?

not if yo season it? scrub it clean, dry it with a cloth (dont leave it to dry) and rub it all over with oil ...

apparently a potato is a good cleaner if the metal has rusted (ta kim and aggie)


when cleaning owt thats really gunky like a grill pan, use biological washing powder (tesco do a box at 50p no frills = is there an aus equivalent??) in very hot water ... the enzymes are great for getting rid of burnt on food :thumbsup:
