I work from home and have a small office, that was converted from a garage.

Its absolutely stinking hot in here and the fan is just not doing enough.

I am supposed to keep all work computers and equipment in an environment of 24 degrees or below, and its well over 30 degrees at moment. This room is particularly hot as its surrounded by indoor walls and I am unable to have window open for airflow as its too noisy outside and I am on the phone constantly.

Anyway I need to get an air conditioner unit installed, I want a wall unit with cooling and heating (for winter). I saw a system in Bunnings yesterday for $479 and was tempted to buy it, its an Akai inverter system, but I did not buy it, mainly as suspicious as such a cheap price and worried that it might be a very noisy unit. Anyone have experience of Akai units?? I absolutely need the quietest unit possible. We have Daikin units in other rooms in the house and they are fairly quiet, but expensive, and as this room is not too big 3m x 8x I am hoping a smaller, cheaper unit will do, but need to know how noisy they would be.

What units do others have and are they quiet?

Thanks

Kevan is an aircon engineer and he's standing over my shoulder. He says basically you get what you pay for and the Akai is cheap and it will be noisy and use a lot of electricity. Daikin are expensive but the energy rating is excellent and that keeps the electricity bill down. He says once you've bought the head and outdoor unit (the bits in the shop), you will still need to get fittings, cable, isolator, pipes, drain covers, flare nuts hat sections and other bits and pieces to get it up and running. You're better off buying a better make.

Thanks MP and Kevan, just what I thought. Will have to look at more expensive units now, will probably go for Daikin again as have not had any problems with them.

If I buy the unit and get someone to install it, would they supply all the fittings and cables etc?

Yes. Kevan can do you a quote if you like? Not too far away, unless you have someone up there you've used before.

I have three units

Daikin 1hp in main bedroom. Good, quiet and easy remote.
Mistral 1hp in daughters bedroom. It works, it is quiet enough, but I won't buy again. And I don't like the remote.
Carrier 2.5hp in family room. Good, Quiet, easy remote.

Both Daikin and Carrier, I would buy again.

Carrier 2.5hp cost $999 in 2005
Mistral 1.0hp cost $305 in 2005
Daikin 1.0hp came with the house in 2002.

The price difference must be that none of mine are inverters.

The installation is normally about the same again, for price.

Thanks MP, will PM you!

And thanks ABC - I think the Daikin is getting the most positive reviews everywhere I have looked.
