Shane had his final interview today for the Navy and passed.

Initially he was told he would be starting at the end of November, but today they changed that to January

I am so pleased for him, despite initially being horrified that he was even contemplating joining the armed forces. I know it will just the thing to sort him out

He will get good training, discipline and be paid whilst learning a trade. He is going to do electrical engineering and once qualified will have a career for life, with no university debt to repay. He will be based at http://www.navy.gov.au/HMAS_Cerberus in Victoria for the first year, and then will be sent to one of the navy ships anywhere around Australia for further training.

Its a shame he is not going in November though, as this was always the plan, and he had not booked to go away for schoolies or his graduation dinner etc because of this, and its too late now, but he does not seem too bothered.

It will be strange to be a family of four rather than five after Christmas

That's awesome. Sad for you guys but brilliant for him. Cresta57's son has just passed out (do they use that expression here?) anyway he's on Cerburus so you could contact him for any extra 'inside' info on what Shane can expect. Shame about November but at least you can have a blinder of a christmas and new year and give him a special send off.

I think it's a great career. Both Kevan and I independently tried to join the RAF but both got turned down for failing the medicals. Then we found each other and forgot all about it but I would have loved the life.

Hope he gets everything out of it he wants. Major congrats to him. :more:

Thanks MP. Shane has been talking online to some trainees already at Cerberus, wonder if one of them is Cresta's son? He also has been in contact with someone from his school who joined last year.

He is also very happy to be going back to Victoria as has kept in contact with his old school friends from Melbourne, so will be catching up with them when he gets there too.

Now I just need to start planning on how to get Holly to leave home

It's a very common expression at Schoolies

The British Armed Forces refused me when I applied, back in the ... (was it that long ago).
