Not having any daughters my self i thought i would check with those of you who have daughters in the 5-8 year old range.
Ive got 2 neices who i thought about giving some of my old make up to. Ive been clearing out some boxes ready for when we go to oz and i have found a few old make up bags with lipsticks and eyeshadows in. They have hardly been used proberbly impulse buys from when i was in my 20's. Any how i wondered if this make up would be ok for girls of the age to play with?
I know you can get 'proper girly makeup for kids' but it seems expensive.
Or should i just chuck this stuff out?

Also how long does perfume last before it goes off?
Ive found a whole load of perfume sets (the ones you get from gran and put away and forget about it) as i thought i would donate it to my local charity shop, as they have never been opened.
I never realised id hoared so much crap in my toiletry boxes.

There's no way would I have been letting my girls play with make up at that age. Also there has been a lot on tv here lately about throwing out your makeup after 6 months, especially eye stuff as it can pass on all sorts of bad stuff. Nice auntie thought though.

I would imagine the make up and perfume is well gone off by now. I agree with Anne, no way would I want a 5 or 6 year playing with make up, it would give them ideas about stealing their Mums etc, and they are bound to make a terrible mess too

Am I allowed to join in, being only a dad ?

Delay the start of makeup as long as possible....

It gives them ideas... My wife is always asking where her makeup and make up tools are... normally found in daughters room !

The technical answers:

Does perfume go off? How can I tell?

Yes. New unopened fragrance normally last well (at least a year or more if kept properly) but opened perfume will eventually go off as it is based on a volatile liquid that will evaporate. You can tell if it has gone off by checking to see if it has darkened significantly or thickened and you get a strange sour smell on opening the bottle. To prevent this happening you should always leave your perfume with the lid on tightly and not placed in direct sunlight or near a heat source. Unfortunately there is little you can do with it once it has gone off as trying to dilute it will not return it to its former glory.

Bottom line: An unopened bottle of fragrance is good for 12 to 18 months, though a light scent—such as a citrus, one with fresh green notes, or a delicate floral—will most likely begin to turn sooner.

 to make up at that age. Hate my 13 yo wearing it and mascara is banned. 11 yo shows no interest at all  although has just started straightening her hair

Don't give the make up, well not unless you want to p##s off their parents of course

Heather went through a period of too much eye liner and foundation despite me telling her daily she would stuff up the great skin she had. Finally realised and now at 17 very very rarely wears any make up at all, a bit of mascara for a party is it. Abs however (my Achilles Heel) is into heavy black eyeliner which she rarely cleans off. How she's not had an eye infection is beyond me. My only rule is that she keeps it to a depth of no more than 2 ml :hide: It's obviously way too much but at least she's doing it. I tried making the rule tougher but then she ignored me completely so I like to think I've won on this bit  No I'm not really that daft but considering the other boundaries she's trying to cross, I consider this one to be minor. I've told the school to feel free to get her to wash her face though. I'm hoping she'll grow out of it in the next year or so and go back to being beautiful again :crossfingers:

God forbid she'd have found makeup at 5 or 6

Thanks for the advice, it is now in the bin,, god knows why i though bright green eye shadow would ever suit me i will never know lol.

The perfume some of it is about 5 years old :blushing: and although never opened ive binned them too. However the bubble bath and talc sets im going to donate them to the next fair at church.

I did find a whole lot of plastic beads necklaces and bangles( from the 80's when it was fashionable) which im going to put in some of the wicker baskets i found and give them to my neices instead, as ive heard that they like that sort of thing.
It feels strange going through my bits and bobs and getting rid of them.

Orlanda is alway is my bathroom with me when I'm putting on my make up. She usually grabs a brush and some eyeshadow and tries to put it on, usually on her cheek! She loves her face painted (regular occurence in our house) which is done using airbrush make up. O and the boys all like me to give them a facial, I wish one of them would learn to give me one. I paint Os nails for her too sometimes

I must really have got this being a mum to a girl all wrong :blushing:
