OMG things got worse this afternoon, she started having bloody diarrhoea and was not eating or drinking. Took her to the vets and they think she might have parvo virus, took blood and poo tests and wanted to send her to an emergency 24 hour clinic overnight. I refused as remember Pumpkin going to one of those clinics when we lived in Melbourne and ended up with a $3000 bill. Anyway she is home, I have to force her to drink and she is on two lots of antibiotics and the vets will phone with her test results in the morning. If it is parvo its pretty serious in a puppy her age. She has had her first lot of vacs so hopefully it wont be that :crossfingers: I am so stressed its untrue!!!! |

I cant see how she can have this as she has had her first vac, had not been outside our house or garden and Daisy is fully vaccinatd, and all the labs at the breeders seemed well. http://www.vetwest.com.au/parvovirus |

Maybe it's that cat food she's been eating upset her stomach? |

Glad its improving. We have always had two dogs and when we got Gretchen we put her in the laundry with Rusty straight away, she was only eight weeks old and she thought Rusty was her Mum and played him up a lot but he was so good with her. Labs, Dachshunds and Pugs eat anything and everything. We have long haired standard Dachshunds and we always had to feed them separate and keep the cat food up otherwise they would eat it. When we had chooks they used to eat the chook food up in the garage, blood and bone on the garden is a no no they eat that. Even now Gretchen is our only dog and 12 she eats anything she can find to eat absolute guts. |

Bad diarrhoea with lots of blood again last night, the laundry was in a terrible state  The cat food is good quality Science Diet and I did mention it to the vet, but they dont think its that as it would not cause her to bleed. It could have been anything as she is constantly sniffing and trying to eat rocks, plants etc when she is outside. As I am typing this she is chewing on one of Jason's belts, well if he leaves it lying around - tough  She does seem to have more energy and seems better in herself this morning. She has eaten breakfast this morning, but its special perscription stuff from the vets, so she wont be staying on that for long. She is on two lots of antibiotics which is a nightmare to get into her as she eats whatever food I disguise them in and then spits the tablets back out. I had to resort to crushing them and putting them in peanut butter  I am not used to this, with Daisy I just drop a tablet on the floor and say 'treat' and she gobbles it up. Mabel is already such a different character  |

Mabel sounds like a typical lab Mel. You can't leave food of any kind anywhere near taz as he'll just eat it, he'll spit out any tablets unless they are stuck to the food they're hidden in, it's as though he can't help himself from eating. My inlaws had a lab x and shed eat very differently, she'd leave the food in her bowl for hours, taz's food is gone in seconds. It's a worry Mel such a young pup being sick, hopefully it's nothing too serious or expensive |

The vets just phoned with good news, its not parvo virus or parasites. She has some sort of inflammatory bowel infection which the antibiotics should sort out - $350 vet bill and I have not even had her a week yet. I did take out insurance for her but it does not cover illness for the first 21 days!!!!!! |

Doesn't the breeder have cover for the first few weeks as it is most likely that she picked this up while still with them? Nicky |

I thought about that Nicky, but not sure if she is still covered once she is transferred to me. I have emailed the breeder to find out, would be great if it was :crossfingers: |

The breeder phoned me almost as soon as i sent her the email, and confirmed that the free insurance she set up started as soon as we picked up Mabel on Saturday and we are covered for illness after the first 72 hours, so that is good news, bad news is that there is a $150 excess, but still its good I will get something back. I cancelled the policy I have taken out (lucky there is a 2 week cooling off period) as I dont need while she is still covered under the breeder's insurance. Mabel seems so much improved and has started eating and drinking again  |

Not being the biggest animal lover in the world I was suprized when I saw the pics..Awww shucks they are so cute. We had to get our dog put down 2 months ago, we had her for 11 years, it's funny when she was here, I was always saying what a pain in the bum she was always sitting at my feet, sleeping at the doors, Now I realy miss her, I even still have to corect my self when I look for her to give her a biscut when I'm having tea, and when someone comes to the door NO barking, it's strange. |

I dont know for sure as will wait and see what sort of character Mabel is as she gets older. I just got the breeders licence so that I could keep my options open and buy Mabel on a full register and not a limited register (which means you have to have the dogs desexed and cannot show them). At the moment I could not think of anything worse, but in time I may change my mind and at least I will have the option to make that decision then. |

Ahh thanks Coco, sorry to hear about your dog. They have a way of getting to you, I know, as I was never a dog lover either and only got Daisy as I had promised the kids we would get a dog when we moved to Australia, but now I could not imagine life without my doggies  Maybe when you get to Australia you can will another dog  Edited by Melibeam, Sep 27 2009, 11:42:30 AM.

Phew! So glad everything is working out for you Mel! We had border collies and bellieve me I don't think there are any worse scroungers in the world. One Xmas eve we arrive home to find that our puppy had raided two bin sacks full of ..well everything that we had forgotted to put outside...she had chewed her way out of her pen to get to them! She was so bloated she couldn't even get up off the floor. The vet bill on xmas eve was horrendus, but she was 8 weeks old and there were chicken bones, cigaretts, cotton wool, all eaten! She was a sick puppy! She had joints of meat off the table, she chewed through Matts Mums kitchen wall (to get to food!) 2 hoovers, a phone and its cable, the list was endless. She got parvo at 8 weeks, (she was found abandoned at 4 weeks old in a dumpster) We had to leave her in the UK thinking she was on her last legs! She died a couple of years ago at nearly 18...the one before that ate my Mums heart tablets and gave herself a heart attack...among MANY other things! Bless 'em, loved them all so much though :) Glad Mabel is settling in well, Zak looks happy as! |

Cute photo  Sure Zac will be chuffed you've posted it on a public forum but hey, why else are we parents here if not to embarrass our kids  Trying to work out why a teenager would climb onto a dog bed and lie down in the first place but not to worry  |

Lol Zac is only 10, so not a teenager yet!!!! There is no way the teenagers would lie on the dogs bed, or let me take any pics of them. Zac was actually snoozing with the dogs and did notrealise I was taking the pic  What he does not know about wont worry him  |

Mabel is growing up fast. These are pics I took of her this morning. She is now 13 weeks old. Daisy loves her and they are so cute together  She is great, fairly well behaved. The only issue I have with her is she wakes every morning at 5am and howls until someone gets up and gives her breakfast  Posted Image Posted Image |

Not so sure about cute at the moment. I have just been outside to clean the pool and noticed a flower bed at the side of the house that she has totally demolished, she has eaten all the plants, dug up all the mulch and got the weed matting out from underneath, and this is now being chewed and played with  No wonder she was being so quiet earlier. When I told her off, poor Daisy put her head down in shame and looked really guilty, even though Daisy had nothing to do with it  |

If my dogs get fed as soon as someone gets up then after a few days they will come and bang on the bedroom door to get us up. So I have to get up, put them out, let them in then I ignore them for a good half hour or more before they get fed. Meg will walk frantically round behind me trying to convince me that she is fading away with starvation but so long as I don't feed her at any regular time or after a regular activity after a while she gives up. After about a week she doesn't bother to come and wake me up for feeding. It's usually Terry who's the soft touch and then feeds her as soon as he's up. I then have to retrain her. |
