Her eyes are a sort of smoky grey colour at the moment, she is asleep now but I dont think it will be long before she starts crying again. I am going be tough and just leave her in the laundry overnight with her bed, water to drink and newspaper on the floor. |

Bless, she was still crying so I got up to take her outside to see if she needed to have a wee or poo. She mooched around on the grass and did nothing so after 10 mins I took her back inside. I put her down on the kitchen floor and she immediately did a wee and as I was cleaning that up she did a poo  She is back in her crate now and after a few mins of crying is now sound asleep. I reckon its easier having a baby, at least you can put a nappy on and they cannot walk around everywhere  |

OMG I am shattered, she was crying for most of the night every time she was left alone. Ended up sleeping on the couch downstairs with her beside me  I had no choice as had to keep her quiet so everyone else could sleep, and not just in our house, but the whole street, as noise travels far here !!!! Jason did not really want another dog, but I got her anyway  Daisy is not being too loving towards her this morning, she has given Mabel a few growls, probably because she was kept awake last night too  Edited by Melibeam, Sep 20 2009, 09:49:41 AM.

Hot water bottle, ticking clock and a teddy. That's what they reckon you should put with a puppy to help it sleep  |

I have a hot water bottle in her bed with a furry cover and she has a teddy but she just seems to want to chew the teddy. Dont have a ticking clock but did leave the radio on low for her, but does not seem to make any difference, she only stops crying when one of us comes and sits near her  She has had a great day socialising today with friends and neighbours, so hopefully she will be really tired later and sleep better tonight. |

Another terrible night, she does not like being left alone. Had the teddie, radio and hot water bottle but makes no difference, she crys and howls loudly. As soon as I sit next to her, she settles down and once she is asleep I creep back to bed, but then an hour later she is awake and crying again. I want to be tough and leave her to cry so she will get used to being alone at night, but she makes so much noise I cant leave her as I am sure she will wake the whole street  I am working today as my annual leave request for this week was refused, so I have had to bribe Zac to look after her all day, thank goodness kids are on school hols. He is on strict instructions to take her outside every 2 hours and wait for her to wee or poo before taking her back inside  |

Remember you are the leader of the pack you may just have to put up with the whining for a few nights but it will end. My two dogs always slept in the laundry and they had proper comfy beds in there and we shut the door on them and they took themselves to bed every night. Since Daisy died Gretchen has been very upset and she started the wining and carrying on, we let her out of the laundry and she wanted to be in the bedroom with us but we just persevered and she gave wining away and she is fine now just sleeps on one of her many beds around the house. We have comfort for the animals all around the place. Whatever you do now is what she will want for life. My friend has two golden retrievers and where do they sleep in their bedroom so if you do not want that be strong. |

I have no problem being strong and do want her to sleep in the laundry, and eventually in the garage with Daisy, but as noise travels so far here, I am worried about her waking the neighbours (she is unbelievably loud) so that is why I cant leave her to cry. Its hard but I will persevere as I know it wont last forever. I had forgotten how hard this puppy business is  |

I'd probably either drop round the neighbours or pop a note through the doors (sorry, boxes) just apologising for any noise and explaining what's likely to happen for a few days. If they have warning and know the reason it won't upset them too much and you'll be able to be strong. Doesn't matter about the kids being disturbed, they're on hols anyway so probably sleeping in  |

Dont know about dropping around any notes to the neighbours as I hate most of them, but still I might do it as I dont want them complaining about the noise. I have decided I am going to indulge her and sleep near her until she is 12 weeks old, and then start some serious training to get her into a routine, I think she is just too young at the moment and is suffering separation anxiety and I dont want her traumatised at this young age. |

Maybe they wont mind the barking ,none of them ever complained about those dogs across the road barking all night  Always find that things seem louder to me when they are mine maybe you are attuned to hearing Mabel ,does she wake the rest of the household???? |

We are all shattered, she woke everyone up regularly last night, including Daisy who is very grumpy this morning  I am sure the neighbours can hear her, as we can hear everything around here, the houses have paper thin walls and lots of windows are open all the time to let air through the fly screens, so sound, even low sounds travel far  Mabel woke up almost every hour again last night, I slept on the couch to be nearer her and got up and let her out. I have to admit she did need the toilet every time I let her outside, but it was a quick, no talking or interaction. I just opened the door, turned the outside light on and let her do her business on the grass, then back inside, back to bed, until the whole thing started again about an hour later. I dont know if this will work though as now she is used to me being near her to let her outside. I have put newspaper on the laundry floor for her to use as a toliet but she does not use it and just cries to go outside, which is very good for such a young puppy, just not every hour all night!!!!! I am also quickly becoming to realise that she is food obsessed. I know most labs are greedy and love their food, but Daisy is not too bad, she never steals the cats food or our food. But Mabel is a different story, I put her breakfast on the floor for her ealier and she gobbled it up quickly, then I went into the laundry to put some washing on and took the cat food off the top of the washine machine, put it on floor and as I was putting the clothes and powder in the machine, Mabel polished off the whole lot of both cats daily food allowance :scared: I did not even hear her, she must have sneaked in behind me and gobbled it up quietly  So much for the breeder telling us to be careful about her diet for the first few weeks, and only give her cooled boiled water to drink - she has also been drinking from Daisy's water bowl outside, and the cats water bowl, and even had her head down the toilet bowl at one stage. I never remember Daisy being this bad at this stage, but maybe I am getting forgetful  Edited by Melibeam, Sep 22 2009, 08:46:08 AM.

Daisy is less impressed with Mabel since she has been kept awake at night by her. Mabel also keeps jumping at her and biting her trying to get her to play and Daisy is having none of it, and now growls at Mabel every time she comes near her. Mabel is also trying to steal Daisy's food all the time, and poor old Daisy just lets her get away with it and looks at me sadly - big sook!!!! I so hope they get over this as they will be living together for a long time to come  |

Its true Daisy was a bit older when we got her and she is unbelievably laid back  I cant really put Mabel in the garage with Daisy as the garage is full of junk that Mabel would chew. Also I store the bulk dog and cat food in there too and Mabel would get into that, whereas Daisy never touches it !!! All the shelves are full so there is no way I can put any more stuff on them. Also it would be so unfair to Daisy as Mabel would probably try and get into her kennel and poor Daisy would get out and sleep on the floor (she would never get into Mabel's bed). Mabel will have to stay in the laundry until she grows up a bit and starts to behave a bit better  |

She fell fast asleep as soon as I put her to bed about 9pm, but by 10pm she was awake and howling crying and whining. I left her out for a wee and then put her straight back into the laundry, and she cried on and off for about an hour. I went to bed as have backache from sleeping on the couch near her. She stopped about 11.30 and all was peaceful until about 2am, then she was crying and scratching the door, but I just ignored her and fell back to sleep so dont know how long she cried for. I woke at 5 this morning and she was crying again and I got up to her. She had been to the toilet on the newspaper on the floor and was desparate to get out of the laundry and see me - bless. I think she is getting slightly better and the crying is not lasting as long, but is heartbreaking to hear her  She is fast asleep on the kitchen floor now, so is obviously knackered from crying during the night. I am going to try and tire her out this afternoon to see if she sleeps any better tonight. |
