Well, after a long testing and diagnostic process, its official, Harry has Apergers Disporder.

Not too upset about it though, we have known for a while that there is something different about him, so its a bit of a relief to have a diagnosis of something. He only just fits onto the spectrum, but has enough charateristics of someone with Aspergers to make a definate diagnosis. We can now start making a plan to deal with the more difficult aspects or his character, and set him up better for the future.

His school will be relieved as they can now apply for funding for an extra person to help out during the day.

I challenged the psycologist on how fasionable Apsergers is at the moment and she conceded that there are many kids out there who have been misdiagnosed, but also said that 10 years ago the testing process was inadequate and many kids who should have been getting help were slipping through the net and the government have been making a concerted effort to help the parents with the cost of diagnosis and and further treatment through their Helping Kids with Autism program. So yes, more kids are being diagnosed today but because of better education of the profesionals (teachers etc) to spot the sign rather than pass the kids off as difficult.

I am quite excited for Harry, because now he will get the help he needs and everyone around him will understand him a bit better. I will be spending the next few weeks researching everything about aspergers, making up social stories, visual helpers, routines and contacting all the proffesionals and charities that are available to him. I have information overload at the moment, been googling like crazy, so I need to step back and sift through everything and come up with a plan to deal with his behaviour.

We have about a month to wait for the report, so the diagosis is only verbal at the moment, and cant do a lot of the official stuff until we get the report, but I can start planning at least.

I'm so glad that you have something tangiable to begin dealing with things for your boy now C. It will help. However don't stress if, in a week or so, you have a bad time. When we got Nialls diagnosis I was like you but once reality hit and I realised I couldn't, as his Mum, make it "better" It broke my heart. That said that was me :blushing: I'm sure you'll be fine

Good luck Harry

Had a bit of a moment like that today. The kids were running out of kindy yabbering on about a birthday party they were going to this afternoon, except, there was no invite for Harry. I remember in pre-school the invites would go round for a party, yet Harry wouldnt get one. I got so annoyed once when I saw a stack of invites on the sign in table, minus one for Harry, that I hid them all!! Childish I know, but I was a bit sad for him as he wont get many invites as he is percieved as difficult. Todays party was for a friends child too, not just a classmate, so I was double miffed, especially as she knows my feelings about this sort of thing.

It must be a relief for you to be able to prove at last that your son is not naughty, he has a problem he cant control, and that you are not a paranoid mum. I hope you continue to get support and help with him.
My youngest was finally diagnosed last year with ADHD and mild autism, once we got the diagnosis it helped so much at school. His new school have been brillant and have tried where possible to include him in all activities, at his last school he got excluded from trips.

My son was often excluded from birthday parties as parents called him the 'difficult one' when we lived in Germany. Now he has had a few invites and the parents have been great with them. We have had to take our son off dairy products as it was causing him to be so hyperactive it was un believable. Now he is a little calmer we are getting included more the community.

Heres to a life full of happiness for you all.
Mandy

There has been a lot of evidence to suggest that regular taking of fish oil tablets can hugely help these children.

I am so glad that things are comming together for you all. I love the Asperge kids at the school and TBH when compared to the other problems that I come across it is the easiest to deal with in school so take heart. The social side of things is a lot harder to deal with and it will be an issue that you have to deal with throughout his life unfortunately. We have had similar things to deal with with Joseph and it is tough. Joseph has a distinctive sense of humour and a very individual personality that causes issues in school in particular but those that know him actually appreciate his wierd sense of humour (though the teachers have difficulties at times). We are looking for a diagnosis to help him at secondary school but I hope that his personality will help him through.
His latest thing is I bought him a set of socks with faces on (happy sad angry etc) and I found out the other day that he takes several with him to school each day and changes the socks depending on his mood (sport time gets angry socks etc). I was teaching the Year 6 day and ended up with a load of Joseph's class mates who were very keen to tell me how cool Joseph is with his attitude socks lol. Sometimes they are appreciated by their class mates even when the parents don't get them so keep positive.

I am so glad that you have got a diagnosis that helps your lad Mandy. Good luck for getting him settled before your move to Aus.
