My youngest Zac (10) is at the local state primary school, in grade 5.

Since we moved to this area we have had his name down for a private school Ormiston College which is also very close to us, both schools are walking distance.

He has an interview this afternoon for a place next year in grade 6 at Ormiston College.

Yesterday he came home from school and started screaming and crying about not wanting to go to Ormiston College next year. I explained that it was only and interview and that if he gets a place, we will discuss it further. After he had calmed down it turned out that his sports teacher had been telling him she does not want him to leave the state school, and that only idiots go to Ormiston College (there were his words so dont know if this is true, but he swore to me she said that). She also has been telling him if he stays at the state school for grades 6 and 7, she will get him into districts for various sports etc. I am not sure what to do, dont really want to complain because he really likes this sports teacher and she has really good encouraging him in the past as he is very sporty and competitive.

What annoys me is that she has put in his mind that only idiots go to the private school, this cant be right

I am not very happy with his academic progress since he has been at the state school, so its important to me that he leaves after this year. Ormiston College has a good reputation for academic stuff and also sports, so he wont miss out on the sports he loves.

I am stressed out now because he has told me that he will tell them at the interview that he does not want to go to their stupid school. I am thinking major bribery is in order.

I dont know why I am stressing about it really, if he does not go to Ormiston College and stays at the state primary school for another two years, I wont have to work extra shifts to pay his fees and he could go to Carmel College for year 8, where the older two are, but they will have finished at Carmel by the time he goes. Its a shame that Carmel only starts at year 8, as that would be the answer to my current dilemma as to getting him out of the school he is in now.

Bloody kids

Bloody teacher more like. I probably wouldn't believe the words he said she used but the meaning was obviously right and I'd complain - and have your son there and have her explain to him that she was talking rubbish but that she didn't want to lose him because presumably that's her motive. It would reflect well on her if he was put forward for comps whilst under her tutelage and did well.

Hope he doesn't bugger up the interview.

Could you not let ormiston college know what has been said so that if he does say something it won't prejudice his case for a place?

I would have a word with the teacher about what she said.....but...If Zac is happy, why move him. If he is having trouble academically, get him a tutor, then put him in private school in year 8. Save you a lot of money if nothing else.

Perhaps the teacher was trying to put across some positives incase he doesn't get in, as in, it's not the end of the world at least if you stay here you can do......

As I have found out recently by making a complete idiot of myself, sometimes the things kids tell you teachers say are taken way out of context...... then again sometimes they are not like the english teacher who called my son dumb, and told me he was dumb.

For my vote..... go ask the teacher for her side of it and find out what she said and how she said it, also ask the private school to really play up their sports side of things in view of his mind set since his chat with his sports teacher.

Well we had the interview and it was scary :scared:

The asked him to do some allgebra (I nearly fainted on his behalf) but he did it well

They were very nice to him and asked him about his favourite subjects and friends etc and then they asked him why he wanted to come to their school and he said "i dont really" :blushing:

I tried to make it better by saying he was just worried about moving schools again, but dont know that they were convinced.

I am not expecting him to be offered a place but heres hoping :crossfingers:

Always a bit confused with what interviews like that prove to the school. Let's face it, a 10 year old is rarely going to come out with some massively inspirational speech about joining a school. Zac sounds very normal. They may like that  At least he was honest and not spouting some words obviously hammered into him by pushy parents.

I dont really know why they interview the kids either  I guess they just want to see them with the parents and check us out. I had already filled out heaps of forms for enrolement and then they needed all his school reports from Grade 2 up to now.

It is a lovely school though, with lovely grounds and great facilities

O well all we can do now is wait :crossfingers:

They will be ised to kids saying that they don't want to come and that won't make any difference if they want to offer him a place. I would speak to his current school without making a big deal out of it and explain that you are considering moving him and do not want him further upset by teachers discussing it with him at school. Ask for them to let you know if he is obviously upset by the move but let them know that you don't want them discussing the pros and cons with him as this will only cause him confusion and potential upset. Once this request has been made in the nicest possible terms you will have grounds for a complaint if it turns out that any teacher is purposly setting him against the move.
Good luck and they do generally sort themselves out pretty quickly after a move. If they offer a place I would get the sport teacher there to take him on a tour and chat to him about the opportunities that would be available there (thye will be far greater than in the public system).

I would have a quiet word with his sports teacher as how can she promise that he will go for district events as he woud still have to prove himself to be the best of the best to get to district surely???

Good luck with the college :crossfingers:

I can laugh now, but yesterday I could have killed him

When we were on our way home I asked him why he had said that he did not want to go to their school, (after all the bribery etc) and he told me he cant lie, and then I felt bad

But he also told me that two of his good friends have also had interviews, so he wont be alone in going if he gets a place. He said the headmistress who interviewed him was seriously scary, so I really want him at that school now

Good luck with that one Bethany was really impressed with the uniform lol. She has just moved from cathedral College (very strict uniform) to the High School (being able to wear trousers and a fleece was a real selling point!).
