This was the news today :

"The WA Education and Health departments have defended their vigilant policies in preventing swine flu affecting schools across the state.

In efforts to combat the virus, schools have told children who are not sick but have family who recently returned from some overseas countries to stay home for a week"

Actually, it gets worse, the note home from youngest states that one WA guy, who is a 30 year old father of 8 ( :omg: ) and lives in Bedford (suprised they didn't give the address  ) has been confirmed as having swine flu. One guy in the whole of WA. Eldest's note said that if you so much as sneezed you had to stay home for 7 days and if you coughed ..... well ...... the end result doesn't bare thinking about. The note also does state that if any member of your family reurns to one of these five countries you have to stay home for 7 days.

Kids are now begging for foxtel

We had an email from our school, the other day, and it included this:

Quote:

Among these measures is an agreement that all States and Territories move to excluding, for a seven-day period, school students from schools that are returning or arriving from the following overseas countries: Mexico, United States of America, Canada, Panama and Japan. This list can be found on the Department of Health and Ageing website: http://www.healthemergency.gov.au and is reviewed regularly in light of the current situation. In Queensland we are referring to this period as a seven-day timeout period.

The seven-day timeout period allows time for the illness to appear if the student has acquired the illness. The seven-day timeout period is only considered at this stage necessary for primary and secondary schools. This is because outbreaks overseas have only been reported in school settings to date.

If you have a child who has returned or is to return from one of the affected areas, could you please advise the school and ensure that your child remains at home for seven days even if they do not have symptoms. The seven days includes weekends and public holidays. If your child becomes unwell, please seek immediate medical advice from your general practitioner.

This seven-day timeout period from school following travel in a country of concern will aid in slowing the spread of the disease and limit the possibility of school closure due to an outbreak in the school.

That puts paid to our visiting Japanese students, who will be arriving in July for 8 days at the local school !

If they did come, they wouldn't be allowed to attend school, until the last day....

Confirmed cases 6am this morning.
23 Vic
16 NSW
7 Qld
2 SA
1 ACT
1 WA
0 Tas
0 NT

BUT... normal flu kills about 2,500 each year anyway...

This is all just a precaution to avoid a massive increase.

The 1918 flu pandemic infected about 500 million, and about 50-100 million died from it. (It lasted almost 2 years)
(250,000 in UK and 12,000 in Australia)

I think the authorities would prefer to take action to avoid that happening again, although they probably think it wouldn't get as bad as that, as we are a lot healthier these days. But who knows for sure.

April 29, 2009. 7 swine flu deaths according to the World Health Organization
May 25, 2009. 91 swine flu deaths according to the World Health Organization

wow - that's a lot of deaths.

I understand the need to be cautious but do think WA went a bit far to publish so much detail about the one WA guy who is infected.......... none of that makes any odds. They've also gone the step further to say that the kids have to stay home if any member of their family has gone to or come back from one of these countries !

I've got some cold/throat bug at the moment and if one more person steps back and asks me if I have Swine Fever I'll bop them one.

We got the same letter as you Erick. Heather asked me if I'd ring the school and tell them I had flu like symptoms so they'd shut the school for a week  Told her the only person who may take time off would be me.

You have no idea how many calls I have been getting about swine flu when working, I am so over it. Everyone with a sniffle thinks they have swine flu. I sort of wish I had it so I could be quarantined for 7 days

It does seem odd to show so much how many kids he has.

Was that the media or a school news letter ?

It has been all over the news about how many kids he has and the fact he was on the same plane as the Freo Dockers. You have to remember this is Perth and it's been a slow news week. If someone is accused of/victim of anything they always report as much as they legally can on who it is, thats just the way things are here, if something is news worthy it gets a lot of attention.

Probably said what this website says:

http://www.healthemergency.gov.au/internet/healthemergency/publishing.nsf/Content/schools.htm

A few bits are here:

Summary
In light of the increasing number of outbreaks of H1N1 Influenza 09 (Human Swine Influenza) in schools overseas, the National Pandemic Emergency Committee (NPEC) recommends a 7 day period of exclusion from school for children (including adolescents) following international travel to a country of concern.

Exclusion from school will apply following travel to certain countries of concern. These countries are defined as having concerning levels of transmission of H1N1 Influenza 09 (Human Swine Influenza). The countries of concern are Canada, Japan, Mexico, Panama, USA

The recommendation is that school exclusion is entirely voluntary. It is up to the discretion of school principals and local authorities to bring this to the attention of parents.

The period of exclusion is for 7 days following international travel to a country of concern. This allows time for the infection to appear if the school student has acquired illness.

Students will be asked not to attend school for seven days following international travel to an area of concern. To the best of their ability, students should also avoid other major gatherings e.g. sporting events, shopping malls

There are Sasha.

My friend was at the dr with her Mum yesterday and the Dr had to go out. They sat for ages and he came back with 3 cases of swine flu to report! Its the next suburb. I'm still now worried though! Its the flu, big deal  Has anyone actually died from it outside Mexico?

Who knows Hevs, it's all gone a bit quite on the "how dangerous is this really" front. With littlies in the house you worry more, so just be super vigilant for symptoms and trust your gut instinct to seek help if needed. It's not going to go away I would imagine it would be here to stay forever and we sure as hell can't go around forever being so jumpy everytime someone coughs or gives an oink.

Youngest came home from school yesterday all worried because a girl in her class said her cousin had swine flu & the girl & her family all have now caught colds.
Explained that as the only known case in WA is a middle aged man am pretty sure this girl doesnt have it ,Why are little girls such drama queens

We have got a family in quarantine in Beechworth (the kids go to the school next door to us) and we have 2 kids at our school who were on the cruise ship. TBH though I am more scared of some of the other nasty bugs that are going around the school at the moment as many people have been sick for weeks and weeks with nasty viral things.
