I eventually went down to Melbourne to see a specialist for my arthritis last week. The appointment was very positive with the dr confident that he can get me pain free which would be a really novel experience  . He reckoned that the UK drs were well aware of my condition back in the 70s so it should have been diagnosed when it first appeared in my early childhood and I have been very unlucky with my drs in the past. Apart from lots of new pills I have been told to cut out complex carbs (no flours or potatoes) as apparently they can cause my system to go mad and attack itself which in turn causes the arthritis. Now I can eat anything that it absorbed in the first part of the gut but have to avoid things that are absorbed in the lower intestine. It is a bit like being gluten intolerant but not the gluten that is the problem. So my diet is not completely screwed as am a real carb fan and tend to be a lazy cook. Breakfast is my big problem at the moment as today I had fruit and yoghurt but this really doesn't take the place of toast or raison toast very well. I am really looking for ideas, Ian has ordered a flour free cook book and we will sift throught it for potato free recipes aswell. I am really going to miss my bulk foods :ooer: . I have had bacon and egg for breakfast but it isn't really what I want every day as time is also an issue in the morning. I can eat rice but shouldn't eat too much and I really need to learn more about what actually counts as a complex carbohydrate. I know that pasta is out as are most cerials. On the plus side dairy is not really as much as a problem as I had thought so dips are back in (although potato and corn chips are out) and I can have cheese. So can anyone save me? Nicky |

I have been researching on the internet and it is very confusing. Apparently the current research says that most people with psoriatic arthritis should increase their intake of complex carbohydrates. There is some new research that links the immune reaction involved to elevated levels of carbohydrate in the system and potato is a common trigger (along with citrus, chilli, dairy and tomoato). For now I will just remove flour and potato and keep whole grains to see if that works. I am confused !!!! Nicky |

I will let you know how I go. I must say that the lack of potato is a real problem for me aswell as I am a real spud fan :S . I will go with whatever is on offer at the moment and what he says about spuds is borne out in other places (although the flour thing is a step further). Apparently he has been doing research since the 70s and they found the link by accident in the UK and still struggle to explain why it works. I don't care why it works and will willingly consign spuds to an occassional treat if I can be pain free for the first time since I was about 10. My diet today has been fruit with yoghurt for breakfast. omlet with peppers, onion, chozorio sausage and cheese for lunch. Home made nut and seed crunch for snacks. Yesterday I made a Thai beef stirfry which was nice enough. I know you are all jealous  Not sure how long I can go without getting very bored but I will give it a go I had BETTER lose weight or else I will really sulk!!! I am away in melbourne tonight and tomorrow with a conference so that will prove interesting, I will just go down the gluten intolerant road with eating out and again sit and cry when my friends eat potato. have you had a look at the arthritis uk sites? they often have loads of online support/recipes etc ... if its too much of a change to cut it all out completely, do it a bit at a time ... just withdraw it from two meals a week, then 3 then 4 etc xx |

ARe you serious? Is there a link? My psoriasis is getting worse and worse, so too are my aches and pains, I never knew there was any kind of link! Nicky...my MIL is on a very strick diet due to her MS and if its any consulation she hasn't had a relapse in a year. She avoids red meat, potatoes, pasta and rice (god knows what I'm going to feed her when she comes!) She uses a lot of wraps (you can get Mountain bread in supermarkets here) I'll ask her for some advice next time she rings... |

When I was 21ish my doctor advised me to start taking cod liver oil tablets as psoriasis sufferers can get psoriatic arthritis when they are older. That was 12 years ago, so advice may have changed.....never did start on the tablets either. |

Hevs it is well worth checking out whether you have psoriatic arthritis flairs can happen for any reason but it is treatable. I am on various meds and have to be careful with what I eat but the dr feels that I can be totally pain free. I have been away in Melbourne for the past few days and I have managed no flour and no potatoes and it hasn't been too bad really. I had fish, chicken and salad and cooked breakfast which to be honest wasn't as bad as I thought that it would be. My diet is currently including a lot of salad, meat, veg, nuts and fruit so not that horrible just a real pain in terms of no quick fix meals and I hope that a side effect might be some weight loss lol. The hotel that we stayed at for the conference were wonderful and it was nice to have fresh fish being so close to the sea for a couple of days. I have just got to get into a proper routine now. I'd be a basket case with no carbs, we eat far too many of them but I seriously struggle to think of anything else. But I do also feel that it is linked to my arthritis which isn't connected to psoriasis. Sue that idea of cutting down slowly sounds like it may be a goer! As for fish oil, again I struggled to take fish oil tablets, I had to take 9 a day and always forget, now I've got liquid fish oil, 10 mls a day in my OJ and I;'m done and it really does seem to help, along with all my juices and snake oils. Aside form the aches Nicky do you feel any other benefits of eating less carbs? Maybe a brekkie idea would be a protein shake, it's quick and simple and if you use some fruit and seeds in it they can really fill you up. |

I feel a lot less sore without the carbs and a lot less bloated (I had better lose some weight). It does seem to be working but it is in conjunction with 15 mls of fish oil a slow release anti infamitory and a sulfur based tablet which I have to increase to 4 per day if possible. It is hard at times especially with lunches for work but I will persevere and see what happens. TBH I will try anything at the moment as the arthritis has been really getting me down and has been deteriorating fairly rapidly. The carb thing is for any sero negative arthritis where your body's immune system is causing the problem. It felt better today after a glass or two of wine and some chocolate. So far brekkie has been either something cooked courtesy of our lovely chooks or yoghurt and fruit so it isn't that bad. It is just soooooo hard to avoid the toast and especially the sultana bread. I will let you know how it goes. Nicky |

I'm going to be following this as I am *trying* to cut out carbs for weight loss. I've done it before and it worked really well and I must say I did feel an awful lot better in general but I am another one that loves my bread, toast pasta and roast potatoes. Although not all on the plate at once :giggle: |

Well I have managed to avoid flour and potato without giving up yet. Breakfast is still a big problem but I have bought a gluten free cerial and that has helped a bit. TBH it is more irritating than anything else as I can still eat most things but I have to put a lot more effort into planning food etc. I do feel a LOT better and am losing a bit of weight. Longer term I am going to speak to a dietitian so that I can check that I'm not causing myself any problems. Nicky |

Well done Nicky, hope you continue to feel better and better. I am another person who would struggle without carbs, we have toast and cereal for breakfast every day and usually a pasta or rice dish for dinner, and a roast with potatoes on Sunday. I dont know where I would start if I had to cut out carbs - I think we would all starve  Edited by Melibeam, Jun 6 2009, 09:52:45 AM.
