Go as planned and if you have to extend the return, you'll have detailed proof (if required) as to why you need to extend. They may (if in a good mood) waive the change fee because of circumstances. Certainly wouldn't change the outgoing, you and your mum need each other's support regardless of the funeral. (Does that sound horrible, does to me but I think you know where I'm coming from).

I would agree with Pen. We changed our return date and never got charged, that was with Malaysian.

And yes adults get menengitus. Matt had it twice whilst recovering from his op and seriously....you just know, they get sick soooo quickly, I mean in like within 2 hours he went from a mild headache to on his hands and knees vomiting, to totally delerious to even worse things that I don't want to tell you about on an open forum :omg:....Very Very scary to witness.

Just had more news, the virus was very rare so the second autopsy couldn't be done. Instead two more autopsies have to be done at two different hospitals and all three must match before the coroner will even consider releasing the body. Now mum doesn't even know if the funeral will be able to take place when I'm there - argh !!!! What do I do ? Book flights anyway and hope ?
are these second post mortems to be done in the uk? if so, contact the coroners office who is dealing with the case and ask thier advice.
coroners have guidelines as to timeframes for this sort of thing and may be able to give you some sort of idea of what dates they anticipate releasing his body to the funeral directors - if you explain your situation they should be pretty sympathetic as they understand what kind of impact this sort of thing has on families. PMs have to be done pretty quickly for .. erm .. obvious reasons so i would imagine you are only looking at one or two weeks - they can then release his body for burial and the inquest held later this year.
the other thing to think of as well, is that once released to the FD the funeral still has to be planned and booked, which might add weeks onto your stay.

this just gets worse. Apparently even if the three autopsies in Germany agree the coroner in the UK could demand one too and they have to try and get a death certificate in UK too before they will release the body for the funeral.

Have booked the tickets today, I can change the flight back if I need to at a cost of $100 per ticket plus any flight cost difference so it is possible in theory. In practice I'm out of credit after the flights and car hire so from now on this is going to prove interesting. If I could play an instrument I'd consider busking whilst I was there !!

As for Mike, he was the fittest guy I know - ate healthy, barely drank, never smoked, walked everywhere was even part of a hiking group and I've never know him sick so this is a complete shock

What a total nightmare. When Ian's dad was at the point of death we headed over to the UK with the idea that we would stay for as long as we could. Our thought was that we were needed there (and needed to be there) as soon as possible and if it ended up that we missed the funeral then that was a minor part of it all really. your mom needs you there.
My young cousin died a few years back from an unknown illness while he was working in France. His employer just found him collapsed on the floor dead and he was a healthy young man. The autopsy system took a while and in the stress of it all it seemed like for ever but in fact he was still back in the UK and buried within a few weeks so it isn't always the beurocratic nightmare that it looks like it is going to be.
Take the deep breath and sort the finances out later. We are still recovering from our trip back which destroyed our savings and put us back into debt in a big way. We will get there and I wouldn't swap the money for the time that we had there ever.

It must be a huge worry but I would imagine they are considering worse case scenario. It could end up being quite straightforward and the funeral could be planned for just after you arrive. Try not to worry about what might be, just concentrate on getting back and then deal with what happens once you're there. Easier said than done of course but when you have so much on your plate, adding stuff that may not happen is too much to deal with.

Unfortunately Meningitis is one of those bastard illnesses that doesn't care who it hits. If he only felt slightly fluey then it's easy for it to take hold and become unbeatable before medical advice is sought. Very sad. Hope your mum is coping ok.

The longer it takes and the more complicated it gets, then all the more reason why you need to be there for your mum. At least you'll be with her supporting her while all the form filling and waiting goes on.

good news all round yesterday, Emirates have increased their baggage allowance to 30kg for everyone  and Germany have released the body, finally, as the autopsies agreed. So the body is being flown back to the UK tonight and then they just need to wait for the UK coroner to release it before they'll get a death cert and can plan the funeral. He died a week ago today so it must be hard on mum all this waiting around.

I have also been blessed by so many people. Mum has given me some money towards the trip as have church and two very dear friends. Friends are also putting us up as we travel through to mums and the response from everyone is just incredible (except Paul .. but then he's not normal  ) So, in two days I'll be off ........... better start packing !!!!!!!

I'm glad his body has finally been released. I can remember when my Grandmother died in Norway it was a bit horrendous with the waiting and not knowing when it was all to happen. I'm sure your Mum will be so relived to have you all there for support, cuddles, and lot's of love. You have some great mates Heather from the sounds of it :)
