Well I finally got sick of my internet probs and phoned iPrimus, to be told that all old netcom modems had some virus and needed to be upgraded!!!

Anyway I have no service from them at the moment so am using mobile broadband on my laptop, but its unbelieveably slow.

I have agreed to a new contract with Primus for 20GB broadband ADSL 2, telephone line rental, all local national and calls to Australian mobiles all networks included for $99 per month, so am happy with that, but have to wait a few days to get new modem.

Anyone else use mobile broadband, I have not used it before and am surprised at how slow it is.

I have never fancied trying it, as I would assume it would be slow.

I just googled it and found a few comments...
Quote:

3's mobile broadband service. I have had it for 6 months and it is truly ghastly. Unreliable, unstable, cripplingly slow

I am using 3 mobile broadband but it is very slow

In some areas Next G will be accessible, but so slow that it’s unusable

Has someone in Perth experienced of extremely slow mobile broadband from Three

268 Responses to “3 Ireland's Mobile broadband offering - slow and unstable?” .... Not only is it incredibly slow - I frequently got 1% of the advertised speed

I have bought mobile broadband. A USB Modem 3.6 with a monthly pay of 20£. To dowload a 21 mb file it took 57 min

I will continue to avoid mobile broadband.

Its 3 mobile broadband I have got, luckily its prepaid and not a contract. Dont think I will be paying any more money on top ups.

I reckon its slower than dialup

Ouch !!

I worry when I visit someone who only has 512k broadband, and I have to sit and wait for things to happen !

Actually its behaving a bit better today, but I have to keep walking around the house though to get a good signal and it takes ages to connect, but once its going its not too bad. Just been looking and the coverage is not very good either with 3, there is no service north of Brisbane or on the Sunshine coast

Its fairly good, I am sitting on patio at moment and it seems be slightly faster and no probs connecting this time. Its definitely hit and miss though.

I got a call from Primus earlier to say that due to high demand there will be a delay with getting the new modem to us, so I might end up having to top up this mobile broadband

Well this ADSL2 does not seem any faster than the previous broadband we had, I phoned iPrimus up just now to complain and was told that its because we are about 3km from the exchange and that the further away you are the slower the connection

This seems the most ridiculous answer I have ever been given, are they serious. They advertise that you can get superfast ADSL2 broadband in your area and when its no better than what you have been using they tell you its because you are too far from the exchange

I have no idea what speed I had before, it was just regular ADSL.

Anyway its better than mobile broadband, so I wont complain anymore, I was more amused than anything else by their answer about being over 3km away from the exchange

Thats right, the farther away from the exchange, the slower the speed. Hovver your mouse over your flashing modem (on bottom right of screen) and see what the speed is. I'm on ADSL2 too, pay the top price with AAPT and have 54 Mbps. Slow as. :o(

I have a feeling iPrimus have ripped me off

Have a look at your speed here: http://www.speedtest.net/

Do NOT press the download or scan buttons, just wait for the start button to appear.

My results on a 1500k ADSL are at:

and
http://www.speedtest.net/result/468243319.png
Two tests from different computers.

My daughters computer downloaded 10 times faster than mine !!

Test results for a 5mb file...

Mine = 7 mins
Daughters = 54 secs

The computer plays a major part in speed tests, NOT just the provider... something that I was not aware of before I did this just now.

I get a new computer and modem on Tuesday, so will check again then, and hope for an improvement.

What speeds are you lost supposed to be getting ?
ADSL2+ is normally 8Mbs up to 24Mbs

Mine is a lowly 1.5Mbs, being the ordinary ADSL.... :(

I'm on ADSL2+ but don't think we get the top speed because its not available in Seaford, SA! Didn't tell us when we bought the package.

By the way, I've just taken off MS Project and MS Visio from my machine and will see how that effects the speed of my PC.

Also, ensure you vacuum your PC so that the fan is not clogged up with dust.

Mine is now only 29 secs (down from 7 mins the other day, with the old modem)

I wonder if the new computer will be any different.... I am almost finished setting that up...

Mine, being on a 1.5Mb/s connection is still low in comparison, but 1.42 from a 1.5 isn't too bad :)

World average is 4.95MB/s, and Australia average is 4.69Mb/s
