I hate halloween

I absolutely hate halloween. For years I refused to let my kids go trick or treating and anyone that came to our door was ignored. I know I am probably a mean horrible mother but the very idea of it annoys me. Kids dressing up and knocking on strangers doors expecting lollies etc with their parents waiting outside on the street for them (not always though) - not my idea of fun.

I have had battles for years with the kids when they were younger about why I would not allow them to go trick or treating and finally gave in to a modified version where we pre arranged with friends to go to their houses and they came to ours. But I still fail to understand how any parent lets their kids knock on strangers doors expecting to be given a treat.

Again tonight I am being told I am a mean mother by Zac as he has been invited by some friends to go to their house after school tomorrow nd go trick or treating with them and I have said no. Jason has now got involved and says I should let him go but it just goes against the grain for me and I cant change my mind about it. I have compromised and said Zac can dress up and give out lollies to any kids that knock on our door and that is a big compromise on my behalf, because I still hate the very idea of it all.

What do others think.

I love it .Mainly because i lived in a very nice road in Uk .We had a fantastic system every house that wanted to participate lit their lantern & children knocked on their doors only, when you ran out of sweets you simply blew out the candle & turned the lanterns face away from the street.
We never once had a child knock after we blew out our candle & one forgetful neighbour had an 8 year old knock on his door to remind them that they should blow out their candle(yes the local kids were a bit precocious)Everybody used to come out & many a bottle of wine was drunk by the front gates ,my kids (and me)really missed it last year :S

I think you're right Mel. Hate it and think it's a stupid American, dangerous and pointless thing to do . I also think, although it's nothing do do with me, you should have stuck to your guns on Zac. Your older ones will now want to know why he can hand out lollies but they never were! Bloody kids, who'd have them, why can't they stay babies who can't nag and moan :D

I love it !!!! Every year we'd have a party and the kids would go out trick and treating with OH (couldn't bring myself to do that bit!) and then they'd bring all the neighbourhood kids and their parents back for a big party. :dance2:

This year is the first one we are having a party in Oz, not quite the same as I can't get loads of stuff I used to and we won't be inviting anyone in the street in just a couple of good mates and their kids but I do love it. Made spider cookies and snake jelly yesterday (couldn't do the graveyard trifle as no grapes) and have a full day ahead with RJS and t'other friend decorating the house and me cooking up the gruesome food. :ecstatic:

Don't like the kids who don't bother dressing up and just knock on the door for food - it's like the carol singers who don't sing !!! :she:

I'm a bahhh humbug Mel, hate the thought of kids going begging for sweets and treats - would not put my kids on the streets begging so won't let them knock on doors either. My two don't even ask now.

I was never allowed trick or treating but then it wasn't much of a deal when I was young. I don't see it as begging personally, it's no different to kids coming round wanting to be sponsered or selling chocolates or even charity collectors knocking on your door.

It's nothing to me to hand out a small sweet to a child who has spent a while getting all dressed up and is enjoying themselves. :dunno:

I don't much mind the smaller kids, I can understand they want to get dressed up and are all excited, but the bigger kids pish me off, i'm sure they could find something else to do and leave the fun for the little'uns.

Last year the local supermarkets sold out of eggs during the day and the vast majority of them were all over the roads and signs etc the next day. Thank god the morons can't be arsed to come near our road. Heather just had a phone call from a friend who's parents seem to be happy for her to wander the streets at night - she's a great kid but way too much freedom. She wanted Heather to go trick or treating with her. Heather got a cob on because I said no. Life sucks and then you die! :D She's over it now, she's such a lightweight at being stroppy with me  I used to be able to stay in a strop with my mother for days

My kids have never been trick or treating but I have always had something in the house in case anyone comes knocking on our door and I always used to carve pumpkins when the kids were little.

Alex has gone off to a Halloween party tonight but has not bothered to dress up. I think at 16 it is just a good excuse to have a get together. :witch:

Thank goodness, some kids have at last arrived all dressed up as witches and wizards and ghosts. Zac jumped out at them in his ghost outfit and tripped over Daisy dog who ran in front of him just as he jumped, so he landed by the feet of the trick or treaters, who had a great laugh. Anyway good humour was restored by all the lollies shared around.

Ok Heather we will have to agree to disagree, cos I don't send my two knocking on strangers doors for sponsor money either :P , but I still wouldn't send them out to ask strangers for sweets. Sorry.

I'm not opposed to kids dressing up and having a good time, I've even had kids over for a halloween tea, its the trick or treating I oppose to. And I was never allowed to do it either as a child, but then Halloween wasn't a big thing then. (I am soooooo old and miserable now LOL)

I had two small boys come up to me and my neighbour, dressed in a black cloak with their faces painted black and white, my dog was very confused by them in their costume.

I didnt have anything with me as I was on my way to the park but one of the lads said to my neighbour 'Havent you got anything? Not even fruit?' and he looked so crestfallen that I went back in my house and gave him my last two bananas, you would think he had won the lotto.

However, there was a group of about 8 children going round knocking on doors getting stuff and their Mums waiting by the gate to take it off of them and put it in a bag.

I managed to get home unseen, put the shutters down on the window and get in safe and avoided the mums/kids knocking on my door. I have nothing to give them anyway.

4 teenagers knocked on the door earlier, saying "trick or treat", I said "what", they said it again, I looked puzzled and said "what" again. They said, "its OK", and walked off.

My kids are out trick or treating, we just stick to the army estate and only go to houses who have the kitchen light on. My youngest is in now, was out 30 mins dressed up as a monster, the older 2 are out with freinds and their parents.
a few doors down from us have created a halloween cave where the kids have to put their hands into gooey stuff to get a treat. Its all good natured.
Since being here its the only time we have been trick ot treating. In the Uk we didn't bother. i know i didn't as a kid, just went to the youth club halloween party that my gran ran.

Edit note
Don't know what happened there, spent ages doing the letters alternately orange and black and it didn't come out that way :(

Scrooge !!!!
My wife said something similar, to me !!!

My first experience with trick or treat, when I knew nothing about it, was when some kids plastered my door with eggs, because I knew nothing about it.

I have never looked favourably on something where kids do that to unsuspecting people.

But next time I'll invite them in for a bowl of pumpkin soup :ecstatic: (I saw someone else suggest that, and I liked it)

I've just been looking up Halloween, as I know little about it, and found this:
Quote:

"Before the 1980s, trick-or-treating in its American form was little known in the UK"
, which explains why I knew nothing about it, having left UK in the 80's.

An Australian new article says:
Quote:

"GROWING up in Australia, chances are your first experiences of Halloween were through watching popular American televison shows.
Halloween safety tips: NOT everyone embraces Halloween so don't knock on a door of a house that is unlit. If they want you to trick-or-treat, it should be obvious. "
