happy memories from a time when i was young, free and single ... my last visit as a YFS lass in 1995 - backpacked from sydney - adelaide - uhuru and back to sydney the long way, then spent about 10 weeks in coggee and finally balmoral (see my other thread).
Id spent several short holidays in aus, but really fell in love with the beach side life ...

so when did you fall in love with aus? were you single/travelling/family there? whats your story about how you ended up in aus?

(i first fell in love with the idea of aus as a teenager from watching neighbours and home&away .... :blushing: )

1984 Easter, on a visiting relatives holiday to Sydney.

I then migrated, for my first time, in 1986.

In 1997, when I first got here as a backpacker.

I still fall in love with it 11 years later. Yesterday I was driving home along the Sea Cliff Bridge at Coalcliff. Lovely coastal/bushy drive and was looking at the tourists thinking "soak it up, but remember some of us are lucky enough to live here"

When I landed in Brissie on my validation trip alone. Was met by the lovely MrsDagboy and as we drove out of the airport on the way to a Thai in Capalaba (strangely  ) I just knew I had come home. Completely and utterly opposite to landing in Perth in 1984. I was amazed by my reaction and three years on, still drive along roads (not Capalaba  ) and think 'Oh My God, I Live Here!!!!!!!!'

I remember thinking the same, when I found out that electric BBQ's were free in parks here, and I also can't get over it each time I see them.

a lot of people take them for granted now. i just know that if they were in the parks n glasgow you would find them in the back of someones garden by the end of the week

When I drove home from the school every day looking at the hills against a bright blue sky (when we lived in our first rental). Also when we had to rush home suddenly with Ian's Dad's death and people we hardly knew stepped in and sorted out things at this end so that we didn't have to worry about post, cancelling Joseph's birthday party, feeding pets etc. It is the sense of community that gets me every time.

Have been falling in love with it since i was 10 & the move here my family promised didnt materialise , :(
still fall in love with it when i see the dolphins or a roo eating my neighbours plants ,or pelicans circling the roof because my cats up there again  There are things all the time that tickle me the fairy wrens that are amazed by my neighbours windows even watching the local kid the magpies hate being looked after by a group of bigger kids with branches over his head(im wicked) ,admittedly i no longer get excited about supermarket shopping because the brands sound funny, love the smell in the air in winter that eucalyptus smell from peoples wood burners, love saying things like hoovering because my Aussie friends think its funny & quaint & love having left my comfort zone to come here at all have met some brilliant people, have had my down times & have been so sickeningly optimistic people must have felt like strangling me,but its a wonderful place & i love it (but agree with Ohippy about the shopping here & im not very good with winter although i dont like that anywhere)& the free barbies are pretty good too
